The Lady Vanishes

Lunar Meadow - Crash Site
::: No please! We are not armed! There are children aboard this vessel! Repeat we are not armed! PLEASE!!! ::::

The recording crackled and went dead. Katarine frowned, listening to the message for the third time. It was a distress signal sent from the ship that was wrecked in front of them. It was a large vessel and according to it's logs in had over four hundred passengers, most of them children, destined out of the Palawa system. That was about all the records showed however. All of the messages in the system had been erased and even the distress call looked as though it had been tampered with. It was strange, but of course this galaxy was full of strange. Kat's appearance here was strange. She had went to sleep in one galaxy and woken up in another. From what she had pieced together it had something to do with the nether realm and a lot of other people had vanished and some had appeared without warning. So vanishing without a trace was possible in this galaxy but still... four hundred children just disappearing moments after a distress signal was sent? It seemed odd.

There was a mixed group assembled around the crash site. The administrator was explaining that as Kat tried to focus back on the present. "I wasn't sure who to call really. Didn't know who handled this type of thing. A lot of people showed up. It's gotten the attention of a lot of people who were in the area."

Perhaps the group would work together to solve the mystery or maybe there were other motives for being there.

"Alright gang split up and search for clues."

Kat smirked at the comment. It reminded her of an old holo show that she and her twin Dax had watched as kids. It had a talking dog or something.

The grass crunched beneath his boots as he walked over toward where the group was clustering around the vacant. Ship. Several heads turned at his approach, a few giving a disdainful shake of their head at his appearance. He couldn't say he blamed them completely. For starters he didn't walk so much as swagger. His black trousers and long sleeve tunic with a vest over top was nearly synonymous with many smugglers. The dual pistols strapped to either thigh finished off the ensemble.

Moving behind the young woman, he slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her slightly back against him, his lips brushing the back of her head. His roguish smirk crossed his face at having [member="Katarine Ryiah"] in his embrace. Of all the galaxies, all the systems, all the worlds, and all the dimensions there were ... as long as he had his princess the Corellian could withstand anything. Whether it be her crazed brother Lord Ravage or even an ancient Sith Lord, Darth Styx.

Turning his eyes to the man explaining what was going on, Ellion shook his head lightly at the lack of information or details. As the group began to break up there were several men who looked over at Kat with frowns, seeing that Eli was holding her close. He tossed them a wink.

"What is the force telling you darlin'?"

He reached out to the force himself to try to get a read on the situation. Yet there was a silence as if the Force had no insight, or at least none to share with a Knight. But perhaps a Master.

Katarine was in the zone when the embrace brought her back to reality. She smiled at the butterflies in her stomach. Too many times this man had slipped through her fingers. A Sith had taken him from her. An addiction had taken her from him. A dimension warp had taken each of them from everything they knew. Yet somehow he was here and she wasn't letting him out of her sight again. She frowned, wondering what the Jedi would say about the obvious attachment. She didn't even know the philosophies of this galaxy yet.

"Fear. I feel a lot of fear. Whatever happened here was not willing. But... it isn't.... cold." In the zone again, she pulled softly away from him and lead him around the wreck. Everyone was investigating bits and pieces, looking for some clue as to what happened here. "I think these people are still alive. Or at least the majority of them." Their signatures didn't feel cold and distant. She could almost taste the fear that lingered on this ship.

"It's almost as if they were taken somewhere against their will. But why? Who needs four hundred children?"

He smiled as she moved from his arm, already engrossed once more in the Force. She had a natural affinity that he almost envied, yet he knew the price she paid for her dedication. It was a price that was too high. But her convictions drove her, the desire to help innocents. It was one of the reasons he loved her. Her selflessness. Her heart.

Following in her path he made his toward the hull of the ship. While Katarine may have had a way to see into the mysteries and intricacies of the Force, he too had his own skillset. Placing his hands upon the ship he let the force flow through him. Mechu-deru may of found it's roots within the Darkside, yet he had learned it and utilized it from a place of light. It opened him up to a new universe, one that had served him well upon the Empty Hawk on more then one occasion.

The fear that permeated the ship was palpable, yet it was the inner workings of the ship he sought to connect with. As his mind melded with the circuitry he flitted through the systems. Deleted hyperspace routes, stars erased from the navigation charts, including the one that the planet orbited. A virus that had infected the flight systems. Someone had went through no small amount of trouble to get the ship into the planet.

Releasing the hull he lightly shook his hands while turning to [member="Katarine Ryiah"]. His thumbs hooked into his gunbelt as he casually enjoyed the view of the Master's profile.

"This was no accident. Sabotage brought the ship to this planet. I don't know why and I'm not sure I want to know, but there are plenty of reasons for someone, or something, to collect kids. It wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened. Not will it be the last. There has to be some trace of how they were transported. All it takes is a little work. I'm sure an investigator and a ruffian can find a trail."

He gave his cockeyed grin before moving to where the landing ramp was. Four hundred souls would leave a trail, all it took was some perseverance, stubbornness, and a little Force for guidance. Between the two of them they had the bases covered.

He was right. There were millions of reasons someone could use a group of kids. He should know, considering the past trauma of his life. She certainly hopped that wasn't happening here. It didn't feel right though in the Force. There was something.. off.

"We got something over here!" One of the investigators yelled out. Kat headed that way and saw what the man was holding. It looked like a patch of some kind that had been ripped off a uniform. It was burned and frayed but there was a pattern in the middle, a large red circle with a white "X" in the middle.

"Do you have any idea what it means?"

The investigator shook his head. Kat took the patch and showed it to Eli. "I don't suppose you have any old connections that might know symbols like these Slick?"

Reluctantly he moved from the ship. He felt that there was always something more that could be learned, something always hidden just under the surface. Yet his gut wasn't telling him this was the case this time. And he had learned to trust his gut instincts. The Jedi at the temple had tried to tell him it was the workings of the force within him leading him and giving him guidance, but he preferred to look at it as the superior instincts of a Corellian. Chuckling at the thought he ruefully shook his head and joined Kat.

Looking at the patch he shook his head in the negative. He had seen many symbols that were visually similar, yet not with the same distinction. Frowning for a moment he tried to think of someone he could contact that may have the answers they were looking for. Unfortunately, the same as [member="Katarine Ryiah"] , he had lost all his contacts and place in the Galaxy with the re-emergence into this new one. There were few he could contact, and only two that he had a relationship with. One was Bjork, his brother, who was currently doing as he was. Finding his place in the new galaxy and answering the call that he had accepted to help those who needed it. No matter the Galaxy or reality, that would remain unchanging. The other was one both Kat and he had known before, one who had arrived in this place before them.

Muad Dib.

"My only guess is a bunch of people running around wearing this and calling themselves the X-Men. But that's absurd."

He shook his head once more, his eyes catching the emerald ones across from him.

"You know who we could call that might know. I don't want to, but if we want answers he may have them, princess. Unless you have an ace hidden up that sleeve?"

The flicker in the Force made her know exactly who he was talking about. They had heard tales months before that the Sith had been transported to this galaxy as well. Katarine had brushed them off at the time but now Eli was actually suggesting they go talk to the monster? Her nose crinkled, in the way it did when she was angry and trying not to show it. She remembered their last encounter with the demon. Eli had gotten hurt, and Katarine had gotten blamed for something that wasn't her fault. Or was it her fault? The nightmares from that night still crept up on her. Her indecisiveness, the lives of those children... and yet weren't just as many, maybe more children on the line now?

"Do you know where to find him?" A question that came through barely parted lips. She was NOT happy about the turn this had taken, and despite her efforts it showed. "We can't go to Sith space to look for him. We don't even know if he's a Sith in this galaxy." It was a long shot but the only shot right now. The problem was they didn't know if Dib was a Sith here, if he was in the business of murdering children, where he even resided..

Or if he's even alive.... she thought to herself more cheerfully.

Lunar Meadow - Nearby Crash-site
Observing

Tathra's crusade to return all of the Dravalan to his care had taken him in many directions, and now it took him to the site of a crash landing not far off from the open Market stalls that Lunar Meadow was known for. He'd done his research before he arrived, spending hours learning about the planet.

It hadn't been along before the typical first responders arrived, Jedi. That made things difficult, he was no friend to them. And given what had just happened on Coruscant, to the Galactic Alliance; they no doubt would be on edge. He himself killed many Jedi and Sith alike in his time spent there.

His crusade demanded results, by any means necessary. Tathra watched, using his small mask to identify the small X symbol they had discovered. He ran it by his database, finding little about it but rumours and hearsay. Not much, nearly nothing to go on. Still, it would be better if he stayed in the shadows for now. The Jedi being aware of his involvement would only cause further disarray.

If they knew he was responsible for the crash, they'd pin it on him, easily. However, he was the one that slaughtered the men in those uniforms. Not the crash itself. He'd failed to reach the cargo in time, they had still got it.

Kalb was a little bit confused about the point of this exercise. Some paper-pusher had called him up, the Morling was still a bit confused about how a man like that had gotten his comm contact, and offered to hire him to help look into a crashed ship. Credits had been involved so Kalb had of course said yes. Now he was present, but having arrived alone, was largely directionless. Look into a crashed ship. Well there was the ship, it was certainly crashed, that was a very crashed ship right there, it being on the ground where ships ought not to be, and also no longer entirely in one piece. That was about the most crashed ship he'd ever seen.

He wasn't very happy about the bit of message he'd heard, it wasn't good to kill pups, but a lot of the galaxy were not very good at all, so it also wasn't surprising.

Despite not being certain what to do, he was fairly certain that if he just stood there, or confirmed that yes, it was a crashed ship, and yes the children were gone, he would not get paid. This was something it had taken him awhile to learn. Sometimes it was good to look busy and as if you were doing something even if you were not. So he decided to see what of interest he could sniff up.

Literally.

Mostly it stank of burnt things and spilled fluids, the chemicals that were the lifeblood of a starship stinging his nostrils. Underneath that though was the story of everyday life on a starship, even louder and more obvious than usual because puppies or almost any species were not particularly cleanly and got all sorts of things into all sort of places. There was a mid-layer though, and that caused the Morling to snort it out, as though rejecting it, before snuffling again. Between the routine and the post-incident, lay a layer that could not be missed.

Fear was easy for any predator to scent. Fear of pups was even easier. Fear sweat, and bladders loosed coloured the air, bringing Kalbs hackles up. It was a bad scent. It made him want to fight whatever had caused it, but you could not fight the past.

He moved deeper into the wreck, ducking hanging beams. A bright glimmering scent drew his attention, food always did. There was no corpse, but the corridor here was blackened as if by fire, and there was enough of the blood that had drawn his attention to ensure whoever had spilled it had not likely walked away. He dropped to all fours, snuffling more intently. At least three beings. One might have come after though, which would explain the lack of corpse. Two of the scents shared similarities. Not family, but the same cloth garbed them, the same food had fed them. The third scent was something he'd never encountered before. He labeled it a threat without knowing exactly why. The scent of burning seemed ingrained in it, though that may have been the charred corridor.

He settled back on his haunches, thinking about this. Thinking was not his strong point, but he could, it just tended to take him longer.
