Podrace The Ison Coathook: the galaxy's chilliest podrace (open to racers and spectators)

Podrace: [1d20]=6

Total: 15

Leg 2:

Kellum was neck and neck with the Twi'lek Eleena Salwa Eleena Salwa , trying to push his pod further despite the turn around Mount Ison. He heard her engine roar as her machine went into the next gear, so to speak. Kellum was about to push into the next gear himself, but found his vision lost when a snowball met his face. Kellum cursed, broke with one hand on instinct, and wiped his face with the other.

"Ahahahahaha" Kellum looked at the next pod in front of him and found a Kowakian Monkey Lizard with an array of snowballs next to him. To say he was on a pod was a bit of a stretch. On a second look it was really a Hutt's barge with a couple of pods lazily attached to it. The Hutt who owned the barge barked an order, and the monkey lizard prepared another snowball. Kellum cursed, and the creature threw another snowball at him. Kellum ripped one his arms to the side, grabbing the snowball with the force and hurling it off the track. It just so happened that the two racers were close enough to the edge that the snowball would hit at most a foot from Jend-Ro Quill Jend-Ro Quill .

As the monkey lizard was close enough to throw a snowball, Kellum reasoned he was close enough to choke. Reaching out a hand and gripping it together Kellum squeezed the windpipe of the monkey lizard. It let out a gulp, before losing consciousness. Kellum smiled before looking at the other racers. The Hutt's pet had cost him significant ground.

Aeshi raised an eyebrow as Jend-Ro spoke, but kept her eyes locked to the displays. Both eyebrows rose as his prediction came true. She stared down at her datapad and then back at the Hermit of Hoth. "Okay, who's going to blow up next?"

This was a deal she could work with. Not only was she getting paid out of every drink, room, and appetizer, but she might even be able to win bigger by his predictions. Aeshi poured a second glass of whiskey and slid it across the frozen table to him.

"You're doing some humanitarian, refugee stuff, right?" She spoke, quick, but fast. "If I put up bid-credits, want to gamble on who detonates first, splitting it half and half?"

Quill didn't hear Aeshi Tillian Aeshi Tillian . A certain holoscreen had one hundred percent of his attention.

The one playing footage of a racer driving through a wampa village in a gory mist.

Quill knew every wampa in that village, every one of the two hundred lemmas in their language. Some wampas could speak a bit of Basic. In his estimation they were fully sapient, not just 'semi.'

Rage roared up in his heart. The temperature in Whistler's Hole dropped twenty degrees.

"Excuse me," he whispered, and tried to stand up.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

Eleena hooked up the trio of corners after the loop with the precision of a surgeon and the finesse of an artist, but as she came out of the fourth, leading into the second to last corner before the long straight along the Cirque Glacier, the Twi’lek suddenly realized that she was going too slow. She floored the throttle, but it failed to respond in an adequate manner, giving her only a fraction of the power that she expected. Suddenly, the podracer ( Kellum Velos### Kellum Velos### ) she had overtaken in the last leg flew past her ailing machine, to which Eleena released a groan of frustration.

“Trin, I’m losing power!” Eleena cried out, panic lacing her tone as she did. She didn’t want her race to end like this. “Drat! If only I didn’t crash…”

And yet, on the other end, her girlfriend was the picture of calm serenity, working to diagnose and address the issue. Nevertheless, Eleena could sense she was losing time, which would only get worse as she closed in the straight.

“Trin, is there anything-”

Then, her girlfriend gave her a miracle.

The engine once more roared to life, having been on the brink of sputtering as Eleena limped her bike around the turn. The Twi’lek knew that it could all come crashing down at any moment, but as she exited the corner leading into the straight, Eleena slammed the throttle with all the strength in her powerful legs, willing the machine to fly at maximum power in an effort to make up valuable time.

Would it be enough?

Leg 3

Headwear properly secured, Kyra made herself focus. A few deep breaths helped tune her own thoughts out, the force guiding her movements across the treacherous ridge without so much as a blip ... spare a wind that caught under her belly and threaten to pull her off the cliff face. She held steady, her forearm muscles straining.

She was halfway through now but she didn't allow herself a lick of pleasure at her lead. It almost felt wrong, like taking credit where wasn't due. Was it skill if the force was involved?

What even was she without it?

Now was so not the time for this crisis.

She sailed through the straight away and brace her butt for the bumps coming up.

Leaving the somehow sentient wampas to drag away the speeder from the race track...

You'd be forgiven for thinking they were all wampas. Snow crusted Jorus' coat, beard, and eyebrows to the point where he blended right in. He clamped a set of hoverjacks to the busted podracer. Repulsors heaved it a couple inches out of the snow. Then Jorus and the wampas got dragging.

Leg 3: A treacherous route over the North Ridge, followed by a skidding straightaway along the Cirque Glacier.

Podrace: [1d20]=18

The Hutt put out a string of expletives as Kellum wove around him. Without the help of his monkey lizard the Hutt was a poor driver, not able to handle the twists if the North Ridge and keep advancing in place. Kellum soon passed him, and met nothing but open snow in front of him.

Another grin snuck it's way on Kellum's face. He pushed his pod, shifting up another gear, then another. He passed a weequay, a gand, and a herglic on his way through the Cirque Glacier. Ahead he spotted a Twi'lek and a Zeltron. They seemed to be leading the pack, but Kellum wasn't far behind.

Perhaps this race would be his yet.

Kyra's teeth rattled as she sailed over the bumps. Her droid whirled in amusement and let out a shrill 'weEeEeEeEe~' that jostled with the rough terrane.

It was nothing more than annoying and soon she turned with ease through the hairpin and onto the-- shit.

Her knuckled tightened in anticipation for the dangerous 5th leg.

Eleena Salwa Eleena Salwa

"OK girl, you are looking good, if the bike holds together you should be in a good position for the next section. High crosswinds, 60knots coming in directly from your right as you go out into the open."

The advanced telemetry coming in from Eleena's bike was great and her ship was giving her the best possible view of the track from above. She tapped her monitor, the signal was a bit iffy on the fifth section, not a significant worry though.

She was so lost in her work that she didn't even notice that another tech had sat next to her, until he introduced himself, "My guy is out, thought he could take a shortcut through a hedge, he'll be fine. Your worm-head is looking good."

"Don't call her that please," Trinity replied, "but yes she is looking good, can I help you with anything?" Not the best time to be introducing himself or throwing about slurs on her girlfriend. "just wanted to say hi, you looked like you were coping well, and see if you wanted to grab a drink after this?"

"No, I'm good, thank you anyway, now I'm going to put my head back down, so if you meant grabbing me a soda by grabbing a drink, you can do that right now." She laughed as she adjusted air intake pressure on the sky chaser, should allow a fraction of extra power, the bike wasn't going to ride much after this weekend without a serious overhaul so better make it a good one.

Hammer down.

Drafting in the wake of the much larger podracers, then slingshotting past them with the additional momentum provided, by the time she reached the end of the straight, Eleena found herself in second place going into the fourth sector. Lining up her machine to take the optimal line through the bumpy Ice Flow, Eleena’s features were narrowed in focus as she took the bumpy hairpin, her body seeming to hang off the side of the bike and giving it a sharp lean angle that allowed her to carry more speed through the corner.

Before long, she was in the wake of the leader.

This time, Eleena didn’t linger, angling her bike to avoid her opponent’s ( Kyra Perl Kyra Perl ) turbulence, while positioning herself in preparation for a pass. Reaching the end of the hairpin, Eleena took a narrow line out of the turn, before firing the bike down the straight, soaring past the Zeltron’s machine as she did. The Aether Accelerator drove her bike even faster, pushing the machine close to its maximum velocity before Eleena sat up on the pillion, preparing to get on the brakes for the most difficult, technical sector of the course.

The Clabburn Range.

Leg 4: A bumpy hairpin turn over the Nev Ice Flow.

Kellum was ahead of the pack, well, the second pack anyways. Ready to climb forward and fight with the Twi'lek and Zeltron women.

Clunk

A mechanical sound emanated from Kellum's left pod.

"Feth". Kellum cursed. The drop in speed was immediate on his left pod, but not his right. His pod as a whole careened to the left. Kellum dropped gear to stop the leftward drift, not merely to keep going forward, but simply to stay on course as it turned rightward.

"Feth" Kellum cursed again. He had dropped two gears before his pod responded appropriately, allowing Kellum to take a more aggressive right turn. He managed to stay on course. Today just wasn't his day.

Wampas huffed appreciatively, and Jorus got in a comparable mood, as Eleena Salwa squeaked ahead of Kyra Perl on the Nev Ice Flow. Next they'd pull some crazy close-quarters maneuvers inside the ruins of Echo Base. Would they emerge intact?

Leg 5

Kyra's jaw clenched as she was skid by, the back end of Eleena Salwa Eleena Salwa 's speeder clipping her and sending her into a full spin out in that narrow passage. She could have collided into any number of things and died then and there, but it was only a quick, skilled jerk of her muscles that kept it all contained, a piece of something breaking off in the narrow passageway before Kyra straightened out and hit the throttle.

A drop of desperation hit her stomach, things suddenly seeming a little .... hopeless.

Breathe breathe breathe
, she chastised, trying to make herself calm back into a focus.

Leg 5: A deadly close-quarters run through the ruins of Echo Base in the Clabburn Range.

Kellum's day continued to get worse. Whatever happened to his left pod? Well, it decided to happen to the right pod as well. The mechanical clunk emanted from the pod, and Kellum's machine continued to move at a pace best described as plodding. He took the ride through Echo Base at a scenic pace, noting the presence of Snowspeeder hangers, Ion Cannons, and other historic markers that would have been otherwise lost to him.

Kellum perhaps should have stuck to swoop bikes.

One corner, then the next. Eleena had run the course so many times that it was all muscle memory.

Until it wasn’t.

It was the same, terrible corner she had crashed on during qualifying. The very same bump in the terrain that had disturbed her bike and sent her flying from the machine, before landing in a pile of snow.

This time, she took the corner faster, with far more hunger for victory. In her head, she could see the checkered flag being waved as she crossed the line in first place. She could see her girlfriend cheering in the paddock, then the victorious kiss that would come after such a hard, dangerous race. She could feel the trophy in her hands, raised high above her head as champagne was sprayed all over her.

Just as she took that horrible bump, the Twi’lek felt her bike kick out from under her legs, thrown into the air in a vicious highside as Eleena was sent flying off the machine. It happened so quickly that she had no time to correct the mistake, instead finding herself half-buried in the snow, her bike sticking vertically out of the ground like a stuck pole.

Race over.

It wasn't often Aktur was able to take a moment to himself, but when he could, he tried to indulge in a variety of simple hobbies - and one was podracing. The crime lord sat dressed in his business suit in one of the private booths of the Nexus, where he sipped a glass of Merenzane Gold, and observed a holodisplay in the middle of the table before him. Dark eyes watched as contestant after contestant dropped out of the race; whether by false start, racer damage, or a poorly executed maneuver.

"Still confident about the one you backed in our bet?" Asked the Coruscanti associate opposite Aktur. "My favorite to win just dropped out, the Twi'lek."

"I'm aware. At this point, I'm still confident in the young humanoid with the red hair. She might be slower than some of the others," Aktur said, as he peered through the broadcast to his booth guest, a smirk on his face. "But she's still in the race, at least. Time will tell if she finishes and I win the bet."

The other chuckled and nodded - "Can't argue that, and hopefully not, then." - then took another sip of her own drink.

Both continued to watch...

"Oh stang. Stang it all to feth, I had fifty creds on her. Come on, boys, let's go drag that wreck outta Echo Base."

It had to be a good thirty, thirty-five klicks south in the teeth of a cold wind, and getting the tow speeder through the tunnels was going to unequivocally suck.

Leg 6- Final Push
Total: 77

Kyra could feel her attention waver on a thin line, her desperation threatening to snap the tender thread of connection she held to the force. Control had never been her strong suit, especially when emotions came into play. Kyra cringed as old memories flickered forward with an haunting-- no.

She wasn't like that anymore.

Kyra let out a slow, tempered breath... and then another... and then one more... until her panic leveled out into a sea of calm and she was no longer confined by the fears that defined her. She was simply... the force.

Kyra flew with expert precision, cutting corners and swerving obstacles with fluid grace. By the time she crossed the finished line she hadn't realized what had happened to Eleena Salwa Eleena Salwa .

Her concentration had been so narrowed, she had only seen one thing.

Kyra Perl Kyra Perl 's victory inspired much stomping and cheering and imbibing of substances. And that was just on the tow speeder bound for Echo Base — the actual crowd was pretty excited too.

A wampa roughneck grunted a question. Jorus shook his head. "Nah, no meat. She won twenty thousand credits. And that Sith biker freak, Kellum Velos### Kellum Velos### , is probably gonna win two thousand just for finishing the damn race, assuming he doesn't crash on the final leg. Punishing course, the Ison Coathook. You know, I used to be something of a podracer myself..."
