LOCATION: LANTILLIES
A quick glimpse of a shadow, the poor view of the beast under the street lights, a glance at a tail disappearing around a corner. The beast was fast, always staying one step ahead. A destructive one as well, as a hunter vaulted over a smashed vendor stall. This was a game of cat and mouse that had been going on for over two hours now. Unfortunately the mouse in this game could easily tear a speeder to pieces, let alone what it could do to the hunter in pursuit.
Riley rounded the corner which the creature last turned and slowed her stride. The narrow roadway had opened up to a large market square. Dim street lights brightened some areas but made others seem darker. A perfect place for the beast to ambush from. The hunter raised her carbine and kept an eye on her heads up display as she slowly moved out into the market square. The chrono in her helmet told her that it was almost midnight. That was fortunate, considering this place would have been packed with shoppers at any other time but now it was a ghost town.
Deafening silence filled the air as Riley stepped further and further into the market. Then she heard it. The sound of claws sinking into duracrete and the low rumbling growl of a predator closing in on its prey. The hunter quickly turned and raised her carbine at the beast. And there it was, it's back as tall as she was, long strong legs that ended in dagger sized claws, a tail twice its body length that held massive strength in it. Gray boney plates covered its dark scaly hide. What unnerved her the most were its eyes, black cybernetic eyes with green iris's that glowed in the night. So here it finally was in all its terrible glory. Project Viper, a genetically engineered killing machine.
Hunter and beast squared off for several tense moments, as if to see who would flinch first. Viper made the first move as it let out a roar and lept at Riley. The hunter dodged quickly to the side, and fired a few shots at the beast. Blaster bolts did little to harm the beast as they either couldn't penetrate the boney plates or they bounced off entirely.
Letting out another roar of anger, Viper lashed out with its tail. Riley just barely ducked under the appendage which proceeded to slam into a light pole, splitting it in two. The area around them was quickly cast into darkness, only to be lighted again by blaster bolts from Riley's carbine. Bolts of blue light slammed into the beast with little effect except to anger it.
Viper launched himself at Riley again, this time giving her little time to react. The beast slammed into Riley, almost knocking the wind out of her, and clamped down on her cybernetic forearm with its sharp teeth. Riley could feel the teeth sinking into the metal of her arm with minimal effort. Grabbing the large combat knife from its sheath, she stabbed the creature between its protective plates. The beast howled in pain as it dropped Riley and backed away. Instead of continuing its assault, Viper lept onto a low roof before scaling over the side of the building. The howls of the beast could be heard getting further away.
Rily lay there on the ground for a few moments as she tried to catch her breath. This thing was far tougher than she expected. As she stared up at the night sky, her chrono beeped informing her that it was midnight. Letting out a sigh, she came to the conclusion that she couldn't do this hunt alone.
