The Hive mind is a collective representation of all creatures connected to the swarm. It does not direct them individually, it passes along collective feedback for the swarm in consensus of the best way to expand or defend itself. Think of it like a large nervous system, with big clusters in developed areas.

Biography:

The hive mind came into being by natural evolution on a predatory planet. The planet was so rife with competitive wildlife, it was a lush planet as rich in creatures and biomass as you'd ever see, little in the way of natural metals, instead almost entirely organic in nature. Through and through there was competition for dominance and all manner of strange evolutionary jumps over time. One of these was giant predators which began to dominate the landscape, huge things which just seemed to get bigger or more deadly.

Life seemed to be headed in this direction for some time! The world was left well alone by anyone visiting it, only the occasional warrior or hunter looking to prove himself would find themselves there, but not for long as making a home there was suicidal if you were not very well attuned to the wilderness.

What started to happen in response was organisms organized, smaller organisms. This has happened on many planets naturally the galaxy over, smaller collective groups overpowering larger individual predators. What was different on the swarm's sphere world, was that this intelligence became so small, and so collective, it was a competition for who could generate the most numbers and diversity. Parasitic intelligence began to form, battling other parasites for control. Rather than humanoid tribal groups, swarms of parasites began to work in unison, eventually collectively becoming a bigger threat than any giant predator ever would be, and naturally of course, a dominant parasite would emerge victorious over time.

Thus over millions of years the hive mind grew to a stable state of consciousness. Until one day it reached a level of self awareness, not of its individual existence, but that of its collective will, seeing itself set apart from the other local wildlife. Hiding itself away by looking to limit itself to insects, not larger prey that might be hunted or taken as trophy, it has finally dropped the facade and began expanding into higher forms of life.
