- Description: The Gardens of Aelavon are among the oldest surviving institutions in Karth's Landing, their origins reaching back nearly as far as the settlement once known as Vael'kora. What began as a modest sanctuary devoted to studying and propagating native plants gradually developed into an expansive botanical institution, distinguished by its monumental glass-domed conservatory and adjoining historic buildings.
Occupying several city blocks within the densely developed urban center, Aelavon stands in striking contrast to the hardened ferrocrete structures and industrial infrastructure surrounding it. Its grounds contain mature trees, ornamental gardens, fountains, shaded walkways, and cultivated landscapes, enclosed by the streets and buildings of the surrounding capital. Rising above the gardens is the Grand Conservatory, an immense dome of reinforced transparisteel supported by an intricate metal framework. A dedicated lightning spire crowns the structure, providing protection against Vaal's violent seasonal storms.
Curving around one side of the dome is Aelavon's principal historic wing, a substantial complex of pale stone buildings whose architecture reflects centuries of additions and alterations. Monumental arches, grand halls, former hotel interiors, and preserved sections of ancient masonry coexist with modern facilities introduced during the institution's restoration. The result is a building that preserves the character of several distinct periods of Vaalan history rather than attempting to recreate any single one.
Following generations of decline and an attempted commercial redevelopment, the estate was acquired and restored by Adonis Angelis IV. Today, Aelavon operates under the independent administration of the Aelavon Foundation, serving as a botanical research institution, public garden, cultural venue, and charitable contributor to the surrounding community. Its historic hotel wing also contains a private residence maintained for the Warden of Vaal.
POINTS OF INTEREST
The centerpiece of Aelavon is its enormous hemispherical conservatory, constructed from reinforced transparisteel panels set within a network of durable metal ribs. Its interior houses extensive botanical collections arranged around an ancient Rainkeeper, a native Vaalan tree whose immense canopy occupies much of the dome's upper reaches. Winding pathways lead visitors through the collections, with the Rainkeeper's massive trunk rising from the center of the gardens.
Unlike conventional greenhouses, the conservatory is designed to accommodate visitors across several elevations without sacrificing the open space or natural sunlight required by its botanical collections. Narrow observation galleries follow portions of the dome's interior circumference, while a limited number of supported platforms extend toward the Rainkeeper's canopy. These structures allow visitors to observe the gardens from above and approach the tree's outer branches without interfering with its growth. The elevated walkways also provide views across the conservatory, allowing visitors to appreciate the scale of the dome and its collections.
The conservatory maintains carefully regulated environmental conditions throughout the year, allowing its collections to flourish even during Vaal's most punishing seasons. Different sections accommodate the varying needs of the plants housed within, while automated irrigation and atmospheric systems help maintain suitable growing conditions. During severe storms, the dome may remain accessible while the outdoor gardens are temporarily closed, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking shelter from the weather.
Standing near the center of the Grand Conservatory is Aelavon's most recognizable attraction: an ancient Rainkeeper, a towering tree native to Vaal's expansive savannas. Distinguished by its broad, layered canopy and extensive root system, the species is adapted to survive the planet's alternating periods of intense rainfall and prolonged drought.
The specimen housed within Aelavon is believed to be at least several centuries old. Prior to its relocation, the tree had suffered years of declining health as development encroached upon its original habitat, disrupting the surrounding soil and natural drainage. With its survival increasingly uncertain, the restoration project undertook the extraordinary task of relocating the mature tree to Aelavon. Specialist botanists and engineers spent an extended period preparing its roots and arranging its transportation, employing heavy repulsorlift equipment to move the enormous specimen without causing further damage.
Its successful establishment within the conservatory became one of the restoration's most celebrated achievements. Under the care of Aelavon's botanical staff, the Rainkeeper gradually recovered, with new growth appearing throughout its once-thinning canopy. Today, its branches stretch across much of the dome, providing shade to the gardens below and offering visitors an unusual opportunity to observe one of Vaal's oldest living specimens.
The Gallery of Worlds serves both scientific and educational purposes. Its exhibitions introduce visitors to the botanical diversity of other planets, while its research facilities allow scientists to investigate how unfamiliar species respond to changes in temperature, moisture, soil composition, and other environmental conditions. One of the institution's longer-term ambitions is to identify and cultivate hardy plant varieties capable of surviving in environments where conventional agriculture is difficult or impossible. Researchers hope their findings may eventually contribute to efforts to restore degraded landscapes, improve soil conditions, and establish sustainable vegetation on some of the galaxy's more arid worlds.
Particular care is taken to prevent the accidental introduction of invasive organisms into Vaal's native ecosystems. Exotic specimens are maintained under controlled conditions, with appropriate quarantine procedures governing their propagation, transportation, and disposal.
More unusual environmental simulations are possible, though the expense of maintaining such conditions limits their use to specialized research projects and temporary exhibitions.
Curving around the other side of the Grand Conservatory is Aelavon's principal historic building, a sprawling complex that incorporates architectural elements from several distinct periods of the institution's history. Unlike the conservatory, whose great dome presents a largely uniform appearance, the adjoining structure bears the unmistakable signs of centuries of expansion and renovation.
The oldest surviving portions contain masonry and structural features dating to the early botanical sanctuary. Later expansions introduced monumental halls, decorative stonework, and increasingly elaborate public spaces. During Aelavon's years as a fashionable destination for wealthy travelers, several sections were converted into luxury hotel accommodations, dining rooms, and entertainment venues. The differences remain apparent throughout the building, where older stone corridors occasionally give way to grander halls constructed generations later.
Rather than removing these additions, the modern restoration sought to preserve the building's varied history. Former hotel reception halls now serve as public gathering spaces, while grand dining rooms and ceremonial chambers have been repurposed for exhibitions, private functions, and cultural events. Even features that no longer serve their original purpose have been retained where practical, allowing visitors to appreciate how the institution changed over time.
Modern improvements have been incorporated throughout the complex, including updated accessibility, environmental controls, and structural reinforcements. Where possible, original walls, architectural details, and historic finishes have been retained. The result is a building that reflects Aelavon's long history without attempting to disguise the many changes it has undergone.
There is also an entrance to Adonis's private quarters here, though it is rarely used unless he is hosting.
The principal public entrance to Aelavon is located within the Historic Wing, where visitors pass through restored reception halls before entering the gardens. Much of the original architecture remains visible, including the decorative stonework and high ceilings that once welcomed guests to the old hotel. Although the halls now serve a different purpose, they retain much of their former grandeur, offering visitors an introduction to Aelavon's history before they reach the conservatory itself.
The surrounding facilities include ticketing services, educational displays, a museum-style gift shop, dining establishments, public amenities, and spaces dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Particular emphasis is placed upon botanical education and the institution's history, with exhibits exploring Vaal's seasonal ecology, traditional agricultural practices, and the development of the conservatory. Visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibits at their own pace, with information available for those interested in learning more about the gardens and their collections.
The facilities are intended to accommodate families, students, tourists, and researchers without compromising the institution's character as a historic botanical garden. Despite the steady flow of visitors, care has been taken to preserve the atmosphere of the original building, allowing its historic architecture to remain an important part of the experience.
Aelavon's scientific facilities are dedicated to the study, cultivation, and preservation of plants capable of surviving difficult environmental conditions. Researchers investigate the adaptations of native Vaalan flora, develop propagation techniques, and examine the potential agricultural applications of species originating from other worlds. Much of their work focuses on understanding how plants endure prolonged drought, extreme rainfall, and other conditions that make conventional agriculture difficult.
Controlled laboratories and growing chambers allow experiments to be conducted without exposing the surrounding environment to unfamiliar organisms. The institution also maintains seed archives containing preserved botanical material, including specimens of native plants adapted to Vaal's severe seasonal cycles. These collections are regularly maintained and studied, ensuring that valuable botanical material remains available for future research and cultivation.
The archives trace their importance to the Gulag Plague, when Aelavon's ability to preserve viable seeds and cultivate food-producing plants throughout the year became a valuable resource for the surrounding community. That experience continues to influence the institution's research priorities, particularly its interest in agricultural resilience and the preservation of species threatened by environmental change.
Access to active laboratories, quarantine chambers, and certain archival collections is restricted to authorized personnel. While much of Aelavon's work is shared through public exhibitions and educational materials, its more sensitive research areas remain separate from the gardens' regular visitor routes.
Beyond the central buildings lie several city blocks of landscaped gardens, winding stone paths, shaded promenades, fountains, and outdoor botanical collections. Although surrounded by the dense urban development of Karth's Landing, the grounds offer visitors a welcome retreat from the surrounding city. Mature trees and carefully arranged plantings provide shade along the principal walkways, while smaller paths lead through quieter portions of the gardens.
The gardens emphasize plants adapted to Vaal's alternating storm and dry seasons, incorporating native species alongside carefully managed ornamental collections. Their appearance changes throughout the year, with flowering displays, seasonal foliage, and special exhibitions reflecting the planet's natural cycles. During the dry season, many of the native plants enter periods of dormancy, only to return with renewed growth following the arrival of the rains.
The grounds are regularly used for public walks, educational programs, concerts, and private celebrations. Their open spaces accommodate larger gatherings, while the quieter paths remain popular with visitors seeking a peaceful afternoon among the gardens. During particularly severe storms, outdoor access may be suspended while the protected conservatory and interior facilities remain operational.
Occupying the uppermost two floors of Aelavon's restored residential wing, the Warden's Residence serves as the private home of Adonis Angelis IV whenever his duties bring him to Karth's Landing. Formerly among the most exclusive accommodations of the old Aelavon hotel, the approximately six-thousand-square-foot residence underwent extensive renovations following his acquisition of the estate. Much of the building's original architectural character was preserved, although its interiors were adapted to suit the tastes of their new owner. Warm brown, pale limestone, dark bronze, and geometric Art Deco detailing are complemented by contemporary furnishings and modern conveniences. Unlike the mountain fortress of Aran'dyr, the residence was never intended to serve as a military stronghold or seat of government. It was, first and foremost, somewhere Adonis could call home.
Fig. I — The grand staircase of the Warden's private residence.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the residence is its grand staircase, a sweeping sculptural construction of strong wood and bronze rising through an open atrium. Its graceful curves are accompanied by intricately worked geometric railings, drawing upon the decorative traditions of the original hotel while embracing a more contemporary architectural style. The staircase ascends toward an open gallery overlooking the main living quarters, with access continuing toward the rooftop above. Natural light enters through a geometric transparisteel skylight, illuminating the staircase and the surrounding interior throughout the day. Together with the open gallery, the staircase lends the residence a sense of grandeur without sacrificing the warmth expected of a private home.
The main living floor was designed with entertaining in mind. At its center lies a large rectangular conversation pit, recessed into the floor and furnished with generous upholstered seating arranged around a low table. A towering feature wall of local hard nut and dark stone rises behind it, extending through the full height of the living space. Elsewhere, a spacious kitchen opens onto the dining area, while a private bar and adjoining lounge provide more intimate places to gather. Modern entertainment systems, a holoprojector, and an assortment of games offer plenty of diversions for visitors. Despite the considerable expense of its furnishings, the residence is noticeably less formal than one might expect of the Warden's station. Comfortable seating, personal belongings, and the occasional evidence of a gathering lasting well into the night make it clear that the rooms are intended to be used rather than merely admired.
The upper floor is reserved primarily for Adonis and his personal guests. His private suite occupies a substantial portion of the level, accompanied by guest accommodations, a study, and a dedicated training studio. The latter contains conventional exercise equipment alongside sufficient space for martial practice, allowing the Warden to maintain his conditioning without traveling to one of the city's military facilities. His study offers a quieter environment for correspondence and private business, although matters requiring the attention of Adonis Angelis Industries are generally conducted at the company's headquarters elsewhere in Karth's Landing. Sound insulation and discreet security measures provide a measure of separation between the private quarters and the more sociable rooms below.
Fig. II — The Warden's private rooftop terrace, overlooking Aelavon's Grand Conservatory and the surrounding city.
Above the residence, a private rooftop terrace occupies the flat roof of the historic wing. Furnished with comfortable outdoor seating, dining accommodations, and a fully stocked bar, the terrace provides an open-air retreat overlooking the gardens below. A large rectangular skylight is incorporated into the terrace floor, letting daylight into the living quarters and offering a view of the illuminated interior after nightfall. Across the grounds rises the great transparisteel dome of Aelavon's Grand Conservatory, its immense Rainkeeper canopy visible beneath the glass. Beyond it stretches the skyline of Karth's Landing, where the city's distinctive lightning spires rise above the surrounding buildings. The terrace is frequently used for private gatherings, although it is equally suited to quieter evenings away from the demands of the Warden's office.
Although situated within one of Karth's Landing's most celebrated public institutions, the residence remains carefully separated from the daily operations of the gardens. A private entrance within the restored historic wing accommodates invited guests, while a secondary access point allows Adonis to enter and leave the property without passing through the public grounds. Reinforced structural elements, controlled access systems, and discreet surveillance provide security without detracting from the building's historic appearance. Mandalorian personnel maintain a continuous presence around the residence, an arrangement considered necessary given Adonis's position within the Mandalorian hierarchy. Nevertheless, the property retains a distinctly personal character. For all the responsibilities associated with his title, Aelavon offers the young Warden something considerably simpler: a place to entertain his friends, enjoy his privacy, and occasionally escape the expectations placed upon him.
SECURITY
Medium
Aelavon maintains security appropriate for a major civilian research institution and historic public venue. Its defenses are primarily intended to protect visitors, valuable botanical collections, restricted facilities, and the estate's infrastructure rather than repel military attacks.
- Professional civilian security personnel stationed at public entrances, event facilities, and restricted access points.
- Surveillance systems, intrusion alarms, and monitored access controls throughout the public and administrative buildings.
- Restricted laboratories, seed archives, and botanical quarantine chambers accessible only to authorized staff.
- Environmental monitoring systems capable of detecting dangerous atmospheric conditions, equipment failures, and potential contamination within controlled growing environments.
- Emergency procedures allowing outdoor gardens to be closed during severe storms while visitors are directed toward protected interior facilities.
- A dedicated lightning spire rising above the Grand Conservatory, supported by the city's established storm-protection infrastructure.
- Specialized protective engineering installed and maintained through an agreement with participating plains tribes. The ancestral techniques involved remain under tribal authority and are not available for independent reproduction by the Foundation or its sponsors.
- Independent access controls, surveillance, and reinforced security measures protecting the Warden's private residence. A permanent Mandalorian security detail maintains a discreet presence within the residential wing and its immediate surroundings, operating separately from Aelavon's civilian security personnel.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The origins of the Gardens of Aelavon stretch back to the earliest generations of Vael'kora, long before the settlement became the sprawling city now known as Karth's Landing. Established decades after the city's founding, Aelavon began as a modest botanical sanctuary dedicated to understanding the unusual growing conditions of Vaal. The planet's alternating storm and dry seasons presented considerable challenges to early agriculture, and its first botanists sought to better understand the native flora that had adapted to survive them.

Early research focused on seed preservation, plant propagation, and the cultivation of crops capable of enduring the planet's unforgiving climate. The sanctuary gradually became an important resource for the surrounding settlement, and its collections grew alongside Vael'kora itself. Though little remains of its original structures, traces of ancient foundations and irrigation systems have been discovered beneath the modern gardens, offering glimpses into the institution's earliest years.
As Vael'kora prospered, successive generations of patrons financed Aelavon's expansion. New botanical collections, ornamental grounds, and research facilities transformed the modest sanctuary into one of the city's most celebrated public gardens. Its greatest addition came with the construction of an enormous glass-domed conservatory, an architectural undertaking that would define Aelavon's appearance for centuries to come.

The surrounding grounds were carefully landscaped, while a grand stone wing was added to accommodate visiting dignitaries, scholars, and wealthy travelers. For a time, Aelavon was as much a destination for Vael'kora's social elite as it was a center of botanical study. Its gardens hosted distinguished visitors from across the galaxy, and its reputation extended well beyond Vaal.
That prosperity would not last forever. With the arrival of the Gulag Plague in 425 ABY, the institution's purpose changed almost overnight. As trade routes collapsed and communities across the galaxy struggled to survive, Aelavon's carefully maintained growing environments became a valuable resource. Its conservatories were adapted to cultivate modest quantities of food and medicinal plants throughout the year, while its extensive seed collections helped preserve agricultural varieties that might otherwise have been lost.

Although the gardens could never have sustained the city's population on their own, they provided an important measure of relief during a period when every harvest mattered. The adjoining hotel was similarly repurposed, its guest rooms and grand halls becoming temporary accommodations for displaced residents, medical personnel, and relief workers. Among those who served within its walls were itinerant healers, including members of the Jedi Order who assisted the city's afflicted. The institution's former luxury gave way to necessity, and for centuries more, Aelavon served Vael'kora in ways its founders could scarcely have imagined.
When the worst years of the plague had passed, Aelavon never entirely recovered its former prominence. The hotel did not reopen as a commercial establishment, and successive economic hardships left the conservatory increasingly dependent upon donations and intermittent public funding. Portions of the gardens remained accessible, while others were gradually closed as maintenance became more difficult. The great dome endured, as did many of the original botanical collections, but the institution's condition deteriorated over the following centuries.
By the beginning of the tenth century ABY, Aelavon's future had become uncertain. Members of the Korven, whose influence over Karth's Landing's commercial affairs had endured for generations, began pursuing plans to redevelop the estate and its surrounding district. Their proposal would have seen much of the historic complex demolished in favor of exclusive residential development. Although presented as an opportunity to revitalize the neighborhood, the project threatened to displace many of its longstanding residents while placing one of the city's oldest public institutions beyond their reach.
The Warden's intervention came through the very regulations intended to facilitate the redevelopment. Taking advantage of provisions established for residential conversion, Adonis Angelis IV acquired the estate and designated a portion of its former hotel wing for use as a private residence. The remainder of the property, however, would not become another exclusive club. Instead, he committed his considerable personal resources to restoring Aelavon as a public botanical institution, preserving the historic structures while modernizing the facilities necessary to sustain them.
The restoration was neither brief nor inexpensive. Engineers reinforced the aging conservatory, replaced damaged transparisteel panels, and updated environmental systems that had long since fallen behind contemporary standards. Botanical specialists undertook the painstaking work of recovering neglected collections, restoring the outdoor gardens, and developing new facilities for scientific research. One of the project's most ambitious undertakings was the relocation of an enormous mature Rainkeeper tree to the heart of the Grand Conservatory. Years of preparation were required to transport the specimen, establish its root system, and ensure its survival within its new environment, as well as reconstructing the dome after it was done.
Protecting the restored conservatory from Vaal's violent storms presented another challenge. Rather than rely entirely upon the city's existing infrastructure, Adonis sought assistance from the plains tribes whose ancestors had helped develop the earliest Storm Lattice systems protecting Vael'kora. Their relationship with the city had deteriorated over the centuries as the Korven consolidated control over those defenses and imposed increasingly burdensome restrictions upon tribal commerce. Many plainspeople had eventually abandoned the city's markets in favor of trading beyond its walls.
Through his relationship with
Rather than retain direct control over the conservatory's daily operations, Adonis established the Aelavon Foundation as an independent nonprofit institution responsible for its preservation, research, and public programming. Its affairs would be overseen by a seven-member board of trustees, with Adonis himself occupying only one seat. Most notably, one permanent voting seat was reserved for a representative chosen by Vaal's plains tribes. The arrangement represented a deliberate departure from centuries of exclusion under the Korven, ensuring that the tribes would possess a meaningful voice in the stewardship of one of Karth's Landing's most celebrated institutions.
Fig. VI — The Executive Director of the Aelavon Foundation, Dr. Celestine Veyr, circa 904 ABY.
The Foundation's daily administration was entrusted to an experienced Vaalan xenobotanist whose considerable scientific credentials were matched by an equally formidable reputation within the city's social circles. Eccentric, outspoken, and possessed of a flair for the extravagant, Dr. Veyr proved particularly well suited to an institution that needed to reestablish itself as both a serious scientific establishment and a fixture of public life. Her longstanding connections among Karth's Landing's influential families, including members of the Korven, provided opportunities for fundraising and patronage without placing the institution under their control.
With its restoration completed, the Gardens of Aelavon reopened to the public, welcoming visitors once again beneath the great glass dome. Its renewed botanical collections, scientific facilities, and historic grounds reflected both the work of its earliest founders and the ambitions of those responsible for its preservation. The surrounding neighborhood likewise began to benefit from the institution's return, with local employment, community programming, and renewed investment accompanying the reopening.
Although Adonis remains the property's owner and principal financial patron, he has largely withdrawn from its everyday administration, leaving its operation to the Foundation and its appointed leadership. The Gardens of Aelavon have consequently become something more than a restored monument to Vael'kora's past. They stand as a living institution, dedicated to preserving the natural heritage of Vaal while ensuring that its benefits remain accessible to the people who call the planet home.
