Public The Final Breach

The notification hit my datapad like a tap on the shoulder.

—Trending: Anonymous Upload — 7,412 Views

I almost ignored it. The network is always peddling nonsense. But the preview thumbnail immediately turned my blood cold. It was my lab. My chair. My desk. My hand, frozen above a syringe of shimmering light.

For a moment, I could not even breathe. I tapped the clip open, and the footage unfurled in silence showing me sitting alone at my workstation, shoulders tight, chin lifted with that stubborn determination I only ever feel when everything hurts. The camera angle -slightly above and slightly behind. Not an angle that I had installed.
Someone was already watching me.

I watched myself slide the needle into my arm with a steadiness I do not remember possessing. A thin line of light followed the vein, snaking beneath my skin like a whisper of lightning. I remembered the burn that transpired with it. But I did not remember the glow.

Then the datapad beside me hissed and flickered. A tray of metal instruments shivered as if caught in a breeze. The lights overhead pulsed; once, then twice, all in time with the quickening beat of my own heart. In the footage, I did not notice any of it.

My throat tightened as the clip looped again - endlessly, cruelly, exposing the moment I broke every boundary I had set for myself. My hand shook as I fumbled through the metadata. Dead end. Scrubbed clean. Someone knew what they were doing. Someone wanted this seen.

I slammed the tab shut and stood far too fast. The room swayed, a faint ringing crawling through my ears. Not now. I pressed my fingertips to my temples, breathing through the spike of panic.

I needed to bury this. I needed to chase down every instance of the leak and try to get rid of it. But there is not a lot of time. I will also need to hide. What little reputation that I have left would surely be tarnished. Once the researcher. And now the experiment. Some may say that I was mad to test the serum on myself if they knew.

But so what if I am?

Where the Video Travels
The recording wasn’t meant to spread… but once it slipped free, it began surfacing in the strangest corners of the galaxy.

*
Imperial black-file science channels
The encrypted networks meant only for sanctioned research suddenly show an unlabeled thumbnail. No metadata. No trace of origin. Tech-officers whisper that someone must have bypassed three clearance levels — or something did.

*
Criminal underworld relays
On the dark holo-net, slicers trade the clip like contraband. Some say it’s proof of a miracle drug. Others say it’s a death sentence captured on camera. Everyone agrees someone will pay handsomely to get the woman in the video.

*
Jedi meditation networks
A few Jedi receive the video embedded inside what looks like a meditation broadcast. No sender. No encryption. And during the injection moment, some report… a ripple. Faint, but undeniable.

*
Sith shadow-circles
Among Sith apprentices and lore-hunters, the clip appears as a corrupted vision file. They argue whether the surge in the footage is an attempt to create power — or steal it.

Across slicer dens, temples, embassies, smuggler haunts, and war rooms, the same question spreads:

Who is she? And what has she done to herself?

Saul was coming in with a small tray of dinner when he noticed Liin having a panic attack. He quickly put down the try and hurried over, taking ahold of her shoulders as he looked at her condition to figure out what was wrong. "Did something...?" It was then another notification on her pad hit.

Anonymous Upload — 17,500 Views.

As Saul glanced at the video, his blood ran cold. This was the first time seeing Liin inject herself and it was disturbing to say the least. He also knew what she must be thinking right now. "I'm... guessing you need a slicer to get rid of this for you right...?"
Liin Terallo Liin Terallo

For a moment I stood there in silence. I was looking at Saul as he had me by the shoulders, but I was not seeing him. I was too fargone within my thoughts. And already with them I was going through a variety of strategies as to how to handle this leak. It was the type of leak that was unexpected. Yet also the type of leak that proved that I am always being watched by someone. And that someone wanted my research even more exposed than it already was, whether for good or for bad; I can only assume the worse.

Gradually my focus returned to Saul and it took me a moment to recall the words that he had spoken to me. I gave him a little nod of my head. "
Yes. And I need to find that camera if it is still there and find out where it came from."

I turned my attention to the latter, my gaze shifting from Saul to the apparent angle near one of my tables that the injection took place. There were shelves nearby, filled with vials, bottles, cannisters and a variety of small pieces of equipment. I approached there first and looked carefully. Not just with my eyes, but with my fingertips as well. And nothing seemed out of the ordinary. There was no sign of a camera hidden there at all. One would think that it might still be there, however the footage was created months ago.

A thought came to mind then. "
What if it was a droid? What if someone snuck in a little droid? We will need to go into the city and see if there are any small enough droids to purchase on hand."

My eyes quickly darted across my whole lab; and although it is a small one, there are plenty of small spaces for a tiny droid to hide. It might not be the only possibility, but it was the only one that I could focus on right now.

A message would pop up on liins holocomputer from an unknown messenger from an untraceable source.

"Word has spread already from and to many circles about your 'artificial force serum' if you need help finding those responsible for the leak and a potential ally meet me in town I'll approach you if you're interested"

The message ended there delvin sat there alone at a table the message was prerecorded and programmed to send after she saw the video. As he sipped his coffee he would help with one hand and backstab with the other aslong as he got samples of her work and notes that was all he cared about then if everything whent as planned he would sell her to the black sun crime faction for their reward on her. But those plans where for future him to plan one step at a time.

Saul's head was spinning as Liin went through the options. He regularly swept this place for cameras and bugs, so someone must have planted that camera in her lab and gotten it out again fast before he or any other of the staff noticed. "It could have been a tiny fly camera droid or something they could have gotten in through the vents..." He couldn't protect this place from every angle. Only the Ones could do that...

It was then that the message came up on the screen. Reading it, Saul muttered, "Well, at least we have a lead..." He didn't trust whoever this was as far as he could spit, but it was better than searching any electronics store or shady dealer in the city.

The vents. How could I not of thought of that? Well it was simple, really. I have never had to distrust my own environment before. I had let my guard down. And now I am paying the price.

A ping from the holocomputer alerted me. It is supposed to be on a secure network, but now I am not so sure. And notably I am grateful to keep my real notes away from any electronic means.

I read the message quietly to myself, taking in Saul's words. "
Yes. And a lead is better than second-guessing ourselves." I can feel the tension rising inside of me; and the worry about this recent exposure. Going into town, I am certain that there will be more eyes upon me than normal. It makes me want to pack up and leave this corner of the Galaxy to head somewhere else unplanned. But I cannot do that just yet. I need to at least find out who produced this latest breach of my laboratory, where the only thing that was stolen was my privacy.

I hung up my lab coat and exited my laboratory. Instead of waiting for Saul to lock up, I did the task myself. And then I left my residence deep in thought, unsure of where exactly this stranger will come from. But I had a shop to go to anyways. I can only hope that this venture into town will be a non-violent one.

Delvin sat there waiting enjoying his coffee as he waited watching random people pass by living their lives normally. Potentially unaware of any galaxy shaking discoveries that may have happened on this planet. He had information for liin about her leak he wouldn't ask for much but he would offer assistance to her and there was no better way then to create the problem and help solve it.

He watched as liin approached he didn't say anything at first "ms terallo I believe" he said as she was mere feet from his table with a nod as he sat there "sit and order a coffee we can talk a bit if you would" he offered.

Oddly enough, there were not a lot of eyes on me like I had feared there would be. Instead people just went their own way as per usual, determined to go about their day. And I was thankfully ignored. I breathed a sigh of relief as I let out the breath that I did not know that I was holding. Perhaps I am blowing it all out of porportion. Afterall, I am not a public figure. Most people have never heard of me and that will probably stay that way.

I was lost within those thoughts for a moment; but then my name was spoken by an unfamiliar voice. I shift my focus to the individual. He appeared confident and a little out of place here, which made me draw the conclusion that he was the one that sent me the message.

I give a brief nod and order myself a small
caf before I sit on the chair across from him. "Thank you. I take it that you have some information for me?"

Delvin sat there as liin sat down "put her drink on my tab I'll pay for it" he said to the waitress. After liin ordered delvin took a datapad out of the bag he had at his side and slid it over for liin to see it detailed an espionage company in blacksun space that finds and leaks sensitive information it was secretly a shell corporation under an alias of delvin that couldn't be traced back to him. "It details the company who found out about your experiment and the device used it was an espionage droid" he said knowing that what he had just said was obvious but he was playing the long game and was willing to give up pieces to do so.

I took the datapad in hand and scrolled through the information. "Espionage? But why go through all that trouble....." My brows furrowed in concentraion while I thought of the possibilities. Yes, the Black Sun knew about some of my research. It was why they had placed the bounty on me, I am sure. But perhaps they did not know as much about it as they had thought.

"Do they work for the Black Sun? Or just within their territory? Now normally an event like this would have some sort of blackmail or ransom involved. Yet I have heard nothing from them." I slid the datapad back to him. "And how did you come upon this information? We have not yet even been properly introduced."

My caf arrives and I take it in both hands, cradling it for a moment before taking a gingerly sip.

Delvin sat there sipping his coffee setting it down before responding. "Im not completely sure but I've had to deal with them in the past myself they keep tabs on scientists and try and leak information on any possible galaxy shaking breakthroughs" he said calmly sitting there. As she spoke "I'm sorry I'm delvin a fellow scientist from arkania no affiliation to the galactic empire that rules the planet a death cult bent on destruction" he said with the slightest hint of disgust in his voice.

As he sat there listening to her and enjoying the warmer weather than arkania usually had. He took another sip of his coffee "I'm not sure what their goals are this time to be honest this is different from the time they tried to blackmail me" he said sitting there. Speaking plainly no hint of deciet or lying in his voice or mannerisms and his face look unchanged.

"From what I've gathered they pay the black sun a portion of what money they blackmail to operate within blacksun territories." He said sitting there as a tea was brought out and sat infront of him and his coffee cup was taken away he raised his tea cup and took a sip.

A message would be sent to liins personal data pad as she sat there from an untraceable origin "give us 9000 credits in person and we will remove all copies of the video from the holonet and claim it was a hoax" delvin sat there unknowing what the message said as his arms where on the table as he sat there.

I dipped my head in a bow as he introduced himself. However that bow was cut short the moment that he mentioned that his homeworld was being held under a foreign power. It is something that I certainly can relate to. "I hope that Atrisia will one day gain it's independence." I also hope that New Cov can gain it's independence as well. Work is certainly underway in regards to that; but all of that is under wraps.

I take another sip of my caf while he speaks about who he believes was involved in the leaked video. I do not really enjoy what I am hearing. Anything gaining intelligence on me to sell to the Black Sun or to anyone is not ideal. In fact it is very worrying.

A notification from my datapad alerts me to a message. Politely I excuse myself from the conversation and read it to myself. Not just once. Not just twice. But three times. My shoulders slump ever so slightly. 90,000 credits was a whole lot of credits that I did not have. Not only that but they wanted me to bring it personally. To me it read like an obvious trap.

I turned my datapad around and allowed him to read it.
"They sure set a high bar. That is a lot of credits." Personally I did not believe that my reputation could be worth so much. But it could be the Black Sun themselves wanting me to pay them to keep me captive. I could not allow that.

Delvin sat there unreacting to the world around them the fact she got the name of his planet wrong didn't bother him in the slightest. Atrisia was a more well known planet anyway not that it held much of importance to him. Sure their technology was advanced by Galactic standard but he still held it in lower regard. As he sipped his tea before looking at liin when he heard her datapad go off not wanting to intrude he let her excuse herself but he did watch for a reaction of some sort.

Seeing her shoulders slouch he knew she got the ransom message he showed no outside reaction. But was willing to "help" her out of this scenario as she came back and showed him the message he read it "that is some serious credits but I should be able to loan you the credits assuming you pay me back over time with a 900 credit additional fee tacked on" he offered sitting there as he awaited her answer he pulled out a datapad and begin punching stuff in his personal droid would walk over a few minutes later with a credit chit a few minutes later if she agreed delvin sliding it over.

"And as far as you delivering it to them in person that sounds like a trap to get you arrested by the dark suns if I've ever read one" he said sitting there.

I repositioned myself so that my posture was back to being perfect. No slouching or slumping was allowed. That was how I was raised. But the weight of the burdens that my research has caused weighs heavily upon me. But I am too stubborn and prideful to give up. If not for my research; I had nothing else of value. I am far too easily forgotten. Should I really worry so much about my reputation?

I held in my breath for a moment while I weighed my options. It was a lose-lose situation. Every choice brought with it an unfortunate consequence. The man across from me suggests that this ransom pick up could get me arrested by the Black Sun. However being arrested implies that I have broken a law. As far as I am aware of, I have broken none.

"Thank you for the offer, but I am going to have to decline. Paying a ransom to these slicers would only encourage them to do more. More than likely that video will be forgotten in a week. And yes, it could very well be a trap. So I cannot be so naive. I will just have to swallow my pride and let it all take it's course. And besides that, this condition of mine is only temporary."

Delvin sat there and watched her carefully and listened as he sipped his tea. She bore the weight of the universe on her shoulders and only allowed perfection. To exude from her it was admirable but also must be tiresome one needed release and to relax but given her current situation he understood her reasoning and probably best to let her cope how she wants.

As she spoke "you do have a point it will only fuel their fire to blackmail more" he said sitting there thinking "you are a brave woman I will give you that but if you are going to wait this out I would suggest scanning your datapads and another devices. For viruses or mal-ware just incase they infected your data and might be datamining you or in case they plan on leaking the actual data on your recent breakthrough if they dont get what they want" he offered as a piece of advice her.

Mentioning that the effect was temporary "temporary as in your looking for a cure or temporary as in it wears off over time?" he asked in a scientific manner "just scientific curiosity you understand if this data gets out im just curious if i need to worry about it becoming a threat or not" he said honestly.

Am I brave? No. If I were brave then I would not be living my life on the run. If I were brave then I would encounter all of these dangers head on. If I were brave, then I would be doing far better in this situation than I am now. But no, I am a coward through and through. And a foolish one at that. The most that I get from everyone is pity. I can see it in their eyes.

I take a sip from my caf as he mentions datapads and other devices for malware or other spying efforts. I do not dare divulge out in the open about writing most of my findings and calculations on paper. Not only that, but I store those papers in seperate caches around the Galaxy, along with some of my supplies that I will need in case any location that I am in becomes compromised. Much like this one is. Any "data" or logs that I put into my datapad are false ones; meant to lead others astray so that my work cannot be so easily replicated.
"Thank you. I will look into that," I placated, if only to protect my secrets from even him.

In regards to his scientific inquiry, I could not divulge that information either.
"It is too soon to know for certain about my condition. But it is just my theory." That should help to let his mind wander further away from the truth. If it is one thing that I have learned; it is to never trust anyone.

THE FINAL BREACH
The Dashiell Estate (Jhaessa Prime)
Liin Terallo Liin Terallo

ch9gJU3.png

Kellan Dashiell Kellan Dashiell lay in bed upstairs, quietly snoring away, while Vesha Daruun remained in her own quarters next door to the boy's room. As per the norm lately, Balun was still awake and sitting in his office, glued to his personal console, his datapad sitting inactive on the same desk.

On the main screen, he slowly scrolled over spreadsheets of the latest earnings from Dashiell Retrofit™. Before that, he had spent the last hour finishing the last documentation for renovations on the Spaceport in Meridian. It wasn't vastly exciting work, but it was purposeful. Beyond the Jedi Order of the High Republic and his familial obligations, Balun still had a Planet to build upon and his company to consider when he found the time to spare.

A new window popped up on the screen, a message immediately catching Balun's attention.

// Balun. Got something fresh off the wire about Liin Terallo, and yeah, this one's worth your time. Pulled it clean, verified across the deep channels, no ghost code, no traps. Solid intel.

You're not the only one slicing into her trail, though. Someone else is sniffing around, and from the credits, they're burning? Not amateurs. Deep pockets, black-budget vibes, and they're definitely not in it for the greater good.

Same arrangement as always. Usual rate. Pleasure doing business, friend. //

Leaning back into the support of his chair, Balun swore under his breath. Frankly, there was a part of him that didn't want to open the file, but while Liin's work had been progressing steadily, he had kept tabs from a distance. He could afford to do so, and knew people who could inform him when red flags cropped up from time to time.

Given the nature of her work, it was more common than not.

Liin Terallo had tried to keep Balun on the outside, given his particular feelings regarding the Force and her creation of a synthetic source. It went against everything Balun knew and had been taught, and yet as he had warned her, his intervention wasn't required. The Force would right itself, whether they wished it or not.

Reaching for his packet of cigarro's, he plucked one out and placed it to his lips before lighting up. Somehow, he felt the smoke would alleviate whatever was attached to the message. Balun would have loved to have been disappointed, but upon clicking on the link, he watched and realised exactly what the feed was showing him.

She had told him about the experiments and their side effects, and he had agreed to help her. Life had reared its ugly head, and apparently, all of his commitments came crashing down on him at once, leaving her disappointed. He hadn't had the time to fulfil his promise, and her typically pessimistic attitude had been validated by his lack of reliability.

It was one thing for Balun to be in the know. It was a whole other story now that it seemed the Galaxy at large had been invited to the party.

"Kark me, this complicates things..." he muttered under his breath, reaching for his Datapad and searching for Liin's personal datafeed. She had given him a means of contacting her directly, and though he tried to avoid using it, now seemed a good time to get in touch with her.

// I've seen the feed. We need to talk. Balun. //

Another ping echoes from my datapad. However this one carries a slightly different tone. I know very well what it means. Someone that I know is reaching out to me.

I set down the caf and non-verbally excuse myself from the conversation while I open up the message and read it. Instantly I feel an utter dread and quietness draw itself around me. Mister Dashiell knows. He saw the leaked footage and now he wants to talk. Or lecture. Or argue. Out of everyone that I know in the Galaxy; my research disappointed him the most. Luckily for me I did not know that many people. But still; I am not ready for this conversation. The truth is that I am not sure if I ever would be.

I quickly type out a one word response;
Where? and send it. Perhaps I can delay the conversation with Mister Dashiell enough with plenty of back-and-forth responses. However such a conversation is not safe to carry out in a digital setting.

Turning my attention back to the man in front of me; I rise to my feet while I tuck the datapad under my arm.
"Thank you for the caf, and the information, but I really must be going. If I require your assistance then I will not hesitate to contact you." And without so much as a goodbye, I walked away. There were clearly going to be some fires for me to put out. And they were sorely going to interfere with my research. But every worthwhile project takes time to complete. Hiccups are expected. And for me this footage being leaked is a mighty big one.

Liin Terallo Liin Terallo 's response did not much surprise Balun. They did not often communicate, and it seemed that when she did reach out to him, there was always a need. Balun, formerly her bodyguard for a time when they shared a membership in the High Society Guild, had resigned the position yet told her to call on him whenever trouble found her, and he had come to expect that trouble often would.

His next reply was also short, a message accompanied by the location of his personal estate. This place, not shared with family save for his Son, and Liin would be the first guest to visit there. It was not something he did lightly, with those he did not trust, but with Liin, he had no hesitation. Despite his disagreements with her work, he understood her to be a good person and a gifted scientist.

// Jhaessa Prime, my place. I have attached the coordinates in this transmission. The site is secure, privacy is certain. //

High Republic Space was the only barrier, Liin having taken exception due to the transition of power over her former world; that which she had little control or ability to retain. She had vyed for it's independance, yet influence, credits and political power all attributed to her unfortunate resignation. She had gone into hiding following those difficult weeks, and Balun believed she still carried the hurt, the regret and the feelings of helplessness that the experience had rendered.

If she accepted, and when she would arrive in the coming days, his estate would greet her in the open plains and plantation that flooded the hills and endless fields of the verdant continent of Ilyndraal, in Balun's mind, Jhaessa Prime's most beautiful land. He had lovingly adopted the continent as his personal project, establishing the Capital City Meridian first and foremost, before choosing a large swath of land roughly 500 hectares now considered privately owned, and ensuring there be room to further expand if he ever felt the need.
