Public The Exhibition of Light

"Hmph," Del muttered when Katherine confirmed she was a warrior. It made perfect sense. She couldn't imagine this winged woman sitting through a dry committee meeting, though on a planet like Naboo, royalty seemed to turn up in the most unexpected places.

When Katherine suggested a mind could be just as formidable as a blade, Del's eyebrows furrowed. She considered her own intellect, which usually left her peers far behind in the classroom.

"I suppose that is true in a library," Del admitted. "My mind is quite formidable against the other Padawans during study, but it doesn't help me much when I am in a spar against a Trandoshan Padawan." She looked at Katherine's powerful frame again and felt that familiar feeling of longing. "I am envious. I wish I could be as strong as you seem."

The invitation to walk and talk sent a surge of relief through Del. She wasn't being dismissed. "Oh yes! Let's walk," she said, immediately falling into step. She had to move with a slight hop, taking twice as many steps just to keep pace with Katherine's longer stride.

When Katherine mentioned not having a home for a long time, Del looked up at her with genuine confusion. "You have to have a home. Somewhere you feel safe."

The topic of At Attin, however, brought the light back into Del's eyes. She practically glowed with pride as they moved through the exhibition. "At Attin is where I feel safe and seen. It is beautiful, and we prioritize education. We believe in being the best version of ourselves."

She slowed her pace slightly, her expression turning uncharacteristically soft. "I miss it sometimes, but I want to challenge myself as a Jedi. I want to help people."

She looked up at the warrior beside her, her blunt curiosity returning. "Do you help people?"

She blinked, forcing herself to listen to the zeltron. His sudden response to her statement about Masters making her laugh.

“Yeah, it is. No matter what way you paint it. There’s only one place - actually, do you know what? I’m not gonna finish that sentence. I don’t know you well enough to share that much detail about my life.”

"I must have one of those faces," Daxin replied with an irritating smirk.

His gaze continued to follow hers briefly. He couldn't quite work out what was holding her attention.

“What are they teaching that's so bad if you don’t stop?”

"What are they teaching...that is so bad...if I do not stop."

He frowned.

"What is so bad if I felt I had to stop?" he said, unpicking the double negative. "I wasn't their teaching, I was just letting myself get overwhelmed and then angry. Not the best state of mind when swinging a laser sword."

"I feel like I am keeping you from something?"

Elian allowed a small smirk to settle across his expression as he turned his attention back toward Lysander, the edge of quiet amusement returning to him as naturally as breath after a long silence. "Brave, worst, they both come hand in hand," he said easily, his tone carrying none of the weight that usually followed his title, as though for the moment he had stepped out from beneath it entirely. "I honestly just do not care about either right now. I am simply trying to have a good time. But thank you for the brief lookout."

He shifted slightly then, his gaze lingering on Lysander with a sharper curiosity that had not been present before, as though something in the man's voice or posture had reached across memory without asking permission first. There was recognition there, faint but persistent. "Lysander?" Elian asked, one brow lifting as he studied him more closely.

"You wouldn't happen to know my sister, would you? Sibylla?" he continued, the question delivered lightly yet with a precision that revealed it was not idle conversation at all, but a careful step toward something older than they thought possible. If it was, what a coincidence this was going to be.

Colette grabbed the pad and began to jot down the address, stopping to think for a moment at Seven's question. A good first thing to say? She blinked.

"Nah, just be honest." She shrugged and handed the pad back. "Tell them you're new and are trying to figure out what your thing is and they should be happy to help."

"I like string instruments. Things I can pluck and hook up to an amp to make it scream or wail when I can't do either of those myself. It doesn't even have to sound good, I just have to let that emotion out somehow and the guitar is a great way for me to make that happen."

Kael sighed, listening to his mother's words. "I could do with a meal, otherwise I have stashed a bit of haashun that I can nibble on. I would think it would hardly look well on the empire to have the son of their ambassador eating a Denta while walking around an event such as this."

When she asked if he had any idea as to how he was going to scrape together the credits to acquire what he wanted, he paused. "Honestly, Buir, I haven't thought much past the verd'gotten or the missions with the pack and training with you. Part of me, I guess, figured that I would find myself being your assistant, learning all that you could teach me so that eventually I could teach the next generation. I could do some investigative work, however..." Kael trailed off on his thought process. "Bounty hunters seem to have a rougher reputation, which makes me think of the old ways. I think I like the thought of working in more of a detective role when not on missions or training or helping you in the diplomatic sphere, even if I'm just an ear and a witness." Kael lowered his eyes, the choices staring to overwhelm him. What if he disappointed her? What if he made the pack and clan look bad by not striking out on his own? He was already behind in so many ways in his development as he saw it. The darkness that had been planted in him by Mand'alor Isley in the verd'gotten started to pull his thoughts in a spiral of self-doubt and feeling like a burden. He immediately shut down and tried his best to wrestle his emotions back under his control before Adelle could sense them.

“A denta bean bun isn’t going to make or break the Empire’s image,” Adelle said, smiling. “It’s good to participate in other cultures. Mandalorians come from everywhere, not just within the Empire’s borders. And you need more than just ration bread.”

She listened patiently as he talked through his thoughts, noting when he fell silent. Her mismatched eyes turned to consider him. His gaze fell for a moment, losing focus, before he seemed to rally. Calm quickly replaced a brief flicker of something in his emotions, something like anxiety.

“Kael,” she said softly. “Look at me. You have time. You are young yet and have only just gotten a proper teacher, proper training. There will be time for you to figure out what it is you want to do for a living. And you’re not locked in to one path. You can always change your mind and train for the job you want to have. I’m offering suggestions but if that’s not helpful, that conversation can wait.”

Lily nodded her head, she had suspected that there was going to be another side to this story. That things might not have been as black and white as Colette had explained them, it was understandable and she was not going to judge Colette for this since one can see a situation completely different to how others see it. So Colette might have assumed she was helping but Reina did not see it as help or wasn't seeking the kind of help and care that was being offered. While Lily herself might have handled things differently, she hoped that Colette had tried her best and simply failed.

"I understand, Colette... She can be a cold, very focused person. While that can be good at times, it seems it was a detriment in this case." The furrow in the brow informed Lily that whatever happened to Reina was not done by Quinn's hand and in fact was done by someone that the Echani queen greatly disliked. It was good information to know, since it meant that there was not complete unity in the Sith and that some actions were considered terrible by others. "I appreciate you informing me of this, I am not sure how the other council members will receive this information but I hope they will take this into consideration. While we wish to be always truthful, even a Jedi's perception on events can stray from the truth of a situation."

Nodding her head, "I believe in compassion, understanding and allowing a Padawan to explore their freedoms... Having my own Padawan, I would protect them as much as I could from external dangers, but at the same time, there are some things that they also do need to face the consequences for. We cannot protect them from everything. I am sure you agree on that. It might be that Colette falsely assumed that Reina needed time and space to face this matter herself." Lily sighed and shrugged her shoulders, she couldn't really say what made Colette turn her back on Reina. It didn't sound like the friend she knew but she wanted to think there had been a reason that wasn't cruel or cold.

"Also... I am unfortunately sharing this information with you from a private council meeting. I hope that we can keep this quiet? I doubt they would appreciate me informing you of what was discussed." Lily mentioned, "even if I believe you had a right to know. Or at least a warning of what had been discussed so you could prepare for any possible Jedi who might go rogue and approach you." She hoped that the council would be able to convene and settle the matter well beforehand.

"Well, you can use it only for emergencies or if you wish to get to know one another more, we can use it to talk and have friendly conversations. I would never be against getting to know you, your highness." Lily gave a small smile, "perhaps next time you will upstage me in attire."

Looking around at the stalls, "how about this one?" Pointing to a stall that was demonstrating a renewable energy source battery.

Aileni was focused on finding food but that did not make him blind to the ongoing surroundings. Noting the voices, the snippets of conversations had around him, the eyes that followed him. The very armoured person that seemed to be stalking him. They were all things that he was aware of, however, he didn't make it obvious that he was aware of them either. There was a curiosity behind how someone stalked, was this someone looking to kidnap him? Attack him? Or converse with him? All things that he was taking into consideration as he moved. It was still very early into his Jedi Shadow training, but he was absorbing the lessons he gained enthusiastically.

The food was delicious, it was rich, the spices intense but not overwhelming. Enough to make a person drool heavily over the thoughts of the food. Perhaps... Aileni might also just be really hungry. He wasn't sure which it was at the moment but desired it to be more of the former than the latter. Though he admitted it was rare for there to be a day or time where he wasn't constantly hungry.

When the armoured woman approached with a bag of food, silent. Aileni looked at the figure and tilted his head, nothing had been said to him. Was this a silent offering? Or was it someone offering that perhaps could not speak? Taking the bag, Aileni began to sign in Galactic Basic Sign Language, it was one of the few languages he learned that did not already feel like a second tongue but he still adapted to the language relatively well. Signing as he spoke in case that assisted the potentially deaf or mute person that he was speaking with. "Thanks. I appreciate the token. Is there anything that I could do for you?" Wondering if this was a gift or there was something desired from him.

While others might have seen a street rat or urchin in Aileni, the boy just didn't think too much on his clothing and wore what either fitted or was deemed practical. Style was not too much of a concern for him.

Kael sighed, "If you want to get some snacks, then I will not protest. I just... I just have had to fend for myself for a while, and having to rely on you, Buir, while it is nice when I don't think about it, it just highlights how messed up things had been before you found me, before the gai bal manda." He finally met her eyes. "I know I'm probably not the son you thought you might have, but I am eternally in your debt for taking me in and teaching me. I hope that I will honor your teaching and prove a worthy investment." He looked away, "Sorry, I didn't mean to get so existential, and maybe when I've finished the schooling you bought for me, I can try that detective job." He moved to look at a diorama of something that almost looked like a Jawa Sandcrawler slung underneath a large ship like a Gozanti, "Please don't tell me the Jawas are looking to take their crawlers to other worlds."

//: Naboo //:
Gone was the armor CT-312 had normally worn. The distinct silhouette of a Scout traded for civilian layers in the style of a minor aide or contracted observer. A fitted coat in muted colors, gloves, and boots. No visible weapons, the only thing that remained in place was the half mask covering the lower part of her face. Practical and neat. What she wore was expensive enough to pass among delegates, but plain enough not to hold attention. Someone forgettable. Even her posture had been adjusted, less overtly military and more casual.

CT-312 gaze traveled slowly across the avenue and its branching lanes of smaller booths. Trailing further out towards the larger pavilions where corporations and interest groups displayed their newest machines and promises. It was definitely different... Here. CT-312 watched the High Republic Security forces stand at their post at intervals through the plaza and patrolling the grounds. They were visible enough for reassurance and blended in to not disturb the image or progress and harmony. A silent declaration that order could be gentle. Progress could be radiant and that tomorrow could be trusted. Naboo had dressed the Exhibition well.

The Queen of Eshan, Quinn Varanin Quinn Varanin , had made mention of attending the Exhibition of Light to review the technological advancements on display and see whether any might serve Eshan’s interests. CT-312 had come as a second pair of eyes, to assess the technology by practical worth and not by presentation.

Her eyes did not linger long enough anywhere to seem interested, though that did not stop the lenses and herself from working. A quiet series of chirps and chimes sounded through her earpiece as BARCA fed information across her vision.

[ BARCA ]
[CROWD DENSITY: MODERATE-HIGH]
[SECURITY PRESENCE:
VISIBLE]
[RESPONSE POSTURE:
REASSURANCE-ORIENTED]
[THREAT INDEX:
LOW / VARIABLE]
[RECOMMENDATION: MAINTAIN CIVILIAN BEHAVIOR]

As CT-312 continued through, most of what she had seen so far were not inherently good or bad. Just useful. Which meant the danger did not lie in the machines themselves… but in the hands that commissioned them and the desperation that would eventually justify their use.

BARCA displayed its analysis and conclusion for her to consider as she moved from one machine to the next. In the end, CT-312 would weigh each machine the way she weighed people: not by what it promised and claimed to be under ideal conditions. But by what remained when pressure, fear, distance, and violence had stripped everything unnecessary away.

That was the assessment the Queen of Eshan actually needed.

The seeming resignation in Kael’s words about snacks brought Adelle’s attention firmly back to the Togruta. She understood well how jarring it was to be so self-reliant due to isolation, only to have connections and a safety net suddenly appear. Trusting it took time. The guilt over relying on it or Whills forbid, needing to rely on it took longer to work through. Adelle still hadn’t worked through it, much to many friends’ consternation.

She laughed at his comment about the Jawas.

“Would it really surprise you if they were?” Adelle moved on from this area of vendors. Clearly one had snuck in or hadn’t been vetted well if there were sandcrawlers involved. “The Jawas are an industrious people, if a little light-fingered.”

Quieter, she addressed his apology over nothing. “You don’t have to be sorry for explaining yourself. I get it, I do. Don’t worry about what I spend providing. It’s my job to see that you’re given what you need to survive, and not just in the wilderness. I meant what I said on Kalevala, at the verd’goten’s conclusion.”

As Katherine listened to Del talk about her struggles during sparring, a small knowing smile formed. She too had been in the same position as a Padawan, albeit she also had to deal with balancing the large wings on a smaller frame at the time. Though that also meant she could utilize them as a benefit during sparring.

Maybe one day you will be as strong, but my point is that strength doesn’t have to just equate to one’s physique.” Force knows, the Katherine of the past was a far cry to the one the one of the present. “You might struggle to match the strength of, say; a Trandoshan Padawan. But that’s when you rely on your mind, to use it to observe your opponent for a weakness in their defence, and then use your knowledge to make it an opening.

Katherine offered a reassuring smile as she looked down at Del.

The mind is capable of not just being as strong as one’s physical strength, but be able to exceed it too.” Katherine’s mind wandered, her gaze staring off into the distance as old torturous memories surfaced. Of a time when her body had failed; broken, but the mind had held on.

Her attention snapped back as Del voiced her confusion about having a home. “Well, yes you’re right. I did eventually find a home during my time as a Padawan, about your age; maybe a little older. Niv Hani is its name.” Katherine smiled as she thought about her time spent there, but her mind then lingered to a more recent place she had come to consider a home. “There is another place, one I spent time on during my time away. But…I think I’ll keep that one close to my chest.” She replied, a knowing little smirk on her face.

She knew the non-answer would only inflame the Mikkian’s curiosity.

But yes, as much as we might miss those places of comfort. It’s important we venture forth into the galaxy, to explore, to learn, to continue growing.” The pair continued walking for a time, initially in silence until Del’s curiosity surfaced again.

I help as much as I can, to whomever may need it, wherever they are in the galaxy.

Kael paused a moment, absorbing his Buir's words. Here he was after being dropped into her life, surviving the Trial by Fire, traveling with her to the core of the High Republic, and he was still doubting his abilities? "It seems I continue to be your hibir, Buir." Kael went over to an exhibit showing all of the royal starships like the N-1. "These are pretty Buir, they may not be armed to the teeth like the empire's ships, but they are nice looking." Kael slowly relaxed fully for the first time since the Verd'gotten. His Buir was right, he had time to figure things out, at least he hoped so.

Well phooey, all her friends left her. It seemed they didn't get along, though at the moment she was having her own problems getting along with them too. And Persie hadn't caught on that Braze had been the one she'd meant to introduce her to despite how she was trying to give her super obvious hints. And of course something had put him off too. She sighed and made sure the envelope was tucked away save, knowing her friend, she already knew what it was. Checking in with the droids, she patted T4p-1T on its little head before emptying the tip jar and most of the tin cashbox of the booth's profits. "Think you two can manage on your own for a bit? I've got an errand to run right quick."

With tap-it's beeps still chirping in her ears, Casaana set off to find the Aurora Industries' pavilion. Traversing through the crowd and the Naboo architecture decorated up for the fair lifted her spirits by the time she found her destination and she practically bounced up to the person Merryn had left in charge of taking care of customers. "Hello! One Bevell freighter please!" She called out, certain that the process would be a little more involved than just plopping the credits down. There wasn't likely one sitting behind any of these buildings waiting to be sold, which meant delivery, and there'd probably even be paperwork.... Maybe she should have sent T4p-1T to do this, the little droid was supposed to be her assistant after all.

Contest Winners!

At the closing of the first day of the Exhibition, as the sun was setting in the evening's purple sky to cast its orange light across the city to reflect from metal rooftops and gently lapping water, the ship contest winners were announced and contracts offered. First was Aurora Industries with the Rosaria-class Gunship, a mid-sized transport capable of moving troops and vehicles. It'd go to police response teams reacting to dangerous situations, planetary guard forces, and the military.

Also selected was the Republic U-Wing by Theed's own Palace's Engineering Corps. Its narrower profile lending it to landing in streets and other improvised pads. It also had just enough extras to be versatile without raising the price of mass deployment or maintenance, a core requirement of the program. Police and security teams all over the Republic would begin receiving the design in the coming months, the U-Wing's iconic silhouette once again reassuring those it served that the Republic was there.

It had been a series of tough calls and comparisons. Every ship was exquisite for its own reasons and the experience was only made more emotional by the drama of discovering some contestants had split affiliations, registering their crafts to other nations and private organizations, as stunningly reveled when a gunship was used to raid a neutral planet and shipbuilding facilities. That incident had prompted closer scrutiny at registrations, disqualifying other contestants and even a frontrunner previously expected to win the show.

((Congratulations to Merryn Sellek Merryn Sellek & Ar'kym Ar'kym !!! It was a tough call, but your ships came out on top! Here's to seeing them in role plays for years to come!))

A STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF MAHPOREENIAN GALACTIC AFFAIRS:

"We understand that the galaxy is a massively complex kind of place."

"We understand Chi Chuchi Chi Chuchi 's decision to select one of our competitors as the winner of the High Republic Design Contest, and we offer our most heartfelt congratulations to Aurora Industries and Theed Palace's Engineering Corps for coming up with such innovative and exceptional designs, along with all the other participants who gave their best effort to fulfill the Republic's design requirements. The Imperial Remnant firmly believes in the spirt of competition, that doing so makes all involved better at the end of the day, and that the High Republic should continue with such contests for the foreseeable future."

"That being said, the Imperial does wish to address the spread of misinformation about its own design entry, the Lambda B-TIE Gunship/Transport. First and foremost, the Imperial Remnant was not informed about any sort of exclusively cause in the design requirements set forth by Miss Chi Chuchi Chi Chuchi . In fact, there is no mention of any sort of exclusivity in the design requirements, with the only stipulations being that the entrant must be affiliated with the 'The High Republic, Closed Market, and Mass-Produced or Minor'. The Lambda B-TIE Gunship/Transport fulfills all these requirements as specified, and the designers of the vessel even worked in tandem with Ms. Chuchi, incorporating feedback that was presented to them, and at no point in any conversation was exclusivity brought up or mentioned."

"The Imperial Remnant does not believe that this was done out of malice or bitterness, nor do they fault Ms. Chuchi for taking a personal investment in the ships that would be up for presentation. In all honesty, the Imperial Remnant does not believe that this issue of exclusivity would at all have been a problem if not for the Mahporeenian involvement in the evacuation of Lianna and the Tion Shipyards."

"It is important to understand the context of Mahporeenian involvement in these skirmishes. With former Confederation and Diarchial space being attacked by both the Sith and the Mandalorians, the Imperial Remnant rushed to Lianna and the Shipyards to evacuate Imperial personnel and destroy abandoned structure to prevent their use by the Sith and Mandalorians. The Imperial Remnant finds it hard to believe that the High Republic would approve or condone a combined Sith and Mandalorian attack on now unaffiliated worlds, and is sure the High Republic understands the urgency of Mahporeem moving to contain the damage of such an assault as quickly as possible. In our rush to save as many innocent lives as possible and too prevent the further spread of Sith and Mandalorian endorsed destruction, Imperial Remnant forces brought whatever ships that they had with them, which included a number of B-TIE Gunship/Transports."

"The Imperial Remnant further believes the population of the High Republic to be smart, understanding and informed citizens, finding it hard to believe that acceptance of the B-TIE Gunship/Transport would equate to High Republic approval of the evacuation of Lianna and the Tion Shipyards. The Imperial Remnant firmly believes that accepting the B-TIE Gunship/Transport can and should be done, as the actions that occurred around Lianna and the Tion Shipyards have nothing to do with the High Republic, short of them sending their own military reinforcements to help stabilize the situation, which has not occurred as of this time."

"In order words, the Imperial Remnant feels that the High Republic may have unfairly judged the Imperial Remnant's submission, and humbly asks that the Republic judge the B-TIE Gunship/Transport on the mechanical and technical specifications that were requested of it, not on the outside actions of a faction that do not even directly involve the High Republic's people or territory. The Imperial Remnant is even fully prepared to compensate Merryn Sellek Merryn Sellek and Ar'kym Ar'kym for lost production and contracts. The Imperial Remnant thanks the High Republic for listening to their plea, and eagerly awaits their response to this matter."

Everette stood there, eyeing Ronhar Tane Ronhar Tane over the rim of his caff. "You know… if you'd had a lawyer with even a passing grasp of intergalactic law and geogalactic politics outside your own little corner of space, you could've spared yourself the embarrassment of hauling your hot garbage across half the galaxy just to confirm it was still trash."

dOLFSlW.jpeg

Unfortunately, contests by their very nature meant that not everybody could win. Captain Ronhar, leader of an Imperial remnant one of those. And Chi knew it probably wasn't helped that the design representing his group had been disqualified early, the notification of which he was now complaining about, passionately and at length after the official end of the competition.

Having written and given quite a few speeches throughout her career, Chi knew not to carry on too much, that attentions wandered, and it was best to stay focused. For herself, she caught her mind wandering to just how long this was taking. By her chronometer, just over five minutes, making the word count around six hundred and fifty. She'd written a lot of speeches. Her main takeaways from Captain Ronhar's were that he was trying to be understanding, but felt like the lambda, TIE, and B-wing amalgamation Mahporeem put forward hadn't been given a fair chance. And that he was desperate for the recognition it being accepted today would bring, as evidenced by his willingness to pay off the other winners.

The rest was hopefully simple smoke for anyone listening, though if he couldn't see the political ramifications of why directly funding the people inconveniencing the Sith and Mandalorians by buying one of the ships used to do it en-mass.... Not just for the High Republic, but for herself, a cushy little former Senator who was supposed to be running a cultural and tech fair and not making political moves beyond showing how nice and friendly the Republic was.

"You're right. In a conversation about the prototype I pointed out the most glaring flaw, you didn't ask me about the contract or contest rules. But on the basis of the design only, it still falls short. Even on a completely even playing field, the others would win. I only wish that everybody could." Actually, some of the others would have done better, but the two winners would still have been picked. Rather than drag things on, Chi decided to end this public spectacle by turning and walking away, Ji-Ji's tall and dark form following along behind her as he kept his ceremonial guard position.

The winners were announced and Matsu looked at it as she hovered there with Eternity as Hanae had moved down. She was sitting on one of the gonk droids as it was moving around with the others. "Hmmm were you expecting that Master?" The shard spoke and he was one of the few she had known for a long time. The shard getting to be changed over several bodies until he was where he was now. "Yes, we knew a contract was unlikely. We weren't even visited or looked at. We submit them still less to win and more to test ourselves. The Fandar was designed to meet and exceed the parameters and outside of the High Republic it will serve just fine." She hovered there looking at the large shard as the expo platform continued. "It is what it is High Marshal. We'll be able to use them where needed and the engineers will be happy. I know Denon will be happy with it."
