  • Designation: Sentient
  • Origins: Korriban
  • Average Lifespan: Ten Thousand Years
  • Estimated Population: Rare
  • Description: While similar to many version of undead beings found in Sith culture, the Lich is fully sentient, holding almost all the memories of the undead being, can appear decaying, skeletal, or as they did in life but simply paler in color.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION

  • Average Height of Adults: Variable, depends on the species resurrected
  • Average Length of Adults: Variable, depends on the species resurrected

  • Immune to Poisons, Bacteria, and Viruses
  • Powerful in the dark side of the Force
  • Does not require food or sleep in the normal sense
  • Can not feel pain
  • Will resurrect if body is only destroyed
  • Body does not physically age
  • Knowledgeable in Sith Necromancy, years of studying how to become a Lich has given the creature great knowledge in necromancy
Weaknesses:
  • Phylactery contain the soul of the Lich, if this trinket is destroyed, the Lich will forever perish but requires an ability of the light side to destroy it
  • Fire, because the body is decaying it would be like kindle to the flame
  • Light side Force attacks can destroy the body with one hit
  • Must feed the phylactery souls as substance
  • Older Liches have shown memory loss, lethargies, and complete personalities changed, and even eventual body degradation. Eventually the ties to the dark side wane and the body of the Lich turns to dust. This doesn't kill the Lich, but does require it to find a new body.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Souls

  • General behavior: Most Liches prefer to hide from the galaxy in the deepest, darkest corners of the galaxy. Almost ALL Liches are hostile to almost EVERY being not under their servitude. Liches hardly take the time to talk, and discuss things to those who intrude their lairs in fear that the beings are there to kill them. Outside of this, Liches can act like they normally would have before death, granted the aggressive levels can be much higher.
HISTORICAL INFORMATIONT:
The search for immortality has been a prolific goal of the Sith since the very beginning, anything to prolong the life of a Sith Lord was deemed necessary, regardless of the path to reach the outcome. This being, however, is not immortal, but rather an alternative too an impossible goal. While swapping bodies through soul possession has been the most popular attempt, this comes much closer to the idea of immortality. While the true origin of the Sithspawn, Lich, is unknown, most agree the first Liches appeared sometime during the Old Republic era on Korriban. Through concentrated uses of the power Invoke Spirit, and a powerful alchemically made Phylactery, and powerful necromancy, the Sith's spirit can be binded to the object while the body is suspended in constant undeath. This is, at least, how it is done today. The result produces a being who's physical body will turn to ash upon defeat, only to reanimate back at the location of the soul, and continue on again without much repercussion to one's actions. However, the need to continuously provide fresh souls to energize the own dark sider's soul is forever needed, and without this ritual being preformed the Lich will slowly die in the same sense one does of starvation.

Liches are a rare occurrence in the galaxy, staying hidden from on wanted eyes, and building a cult following to do one's biding. This ritual is normally only used by those who wish to forever research the Force, and other forms of science and mystics. There are, though, instances of those who have used to this ritual to be un-killable warriors of the dark side granted their weaknesses make it easy for Jedi to combat them. Only those who have a strong connection to the dark side can become liches, and even then sometimes this ritual does not always work, ripping apart the being's soul in the process. Records have presented cases of old Sith Liches slowly losing their sanity, and personality the older they become, the exact age of these liches are not given, but presumed well over hundreds of years old. They are shown to also lose track of their goals, and requirements to live, thus dying from essentially old age and soul hunger. Depending on how strong the being is before the ritual will result in the outcome of the body's constitution after. Weaker beings who undergo the Lich ritual but are able to complete it will find their physicals bodies in a state of constant decaying to even fully skeletal, while those of a stronger power will they're appearance has not changed much at all outside of the pale color of death with the tone of their skin. Eventually with old age, however, the lich's body will begin to decay with old age.

Powerful in the ways of the dark side, but more so on the side of the taboo of Necromancy, is it not uncommon for Liches to use the undead as minions and guardians of their lairs. Their lairs can be anywhere from deep within caves, derelict star destroyers, crypts and more. Liches do not require sleep, though they can go in a trance like state; food outside the occasional soul, and oxygen or whatever their species requires to breathe. One of the greatest strengths of the Lich is it's ability to use it's physical body without worry of permanent death. The body of the Lich is just that, a undead flesh puppet, and the soul attached to the phylactery is the real source of the Lich's presence. Unlike the death of a Sith, or any being for that matter, if this item is destroyed, the very concept of the Lich is forever destroyed. The soul does not go to the Netherworld, does not haunt, does not pass on. The soul is forever destroyed.

Under Review Karthus Karthus

This is a classic fantasy concept, and you've put together some good links and interesting history to justify it. We do have to be a little careful, though, when we work with such powerful species. Here are some things to address before approval:

  • Per the Codex rules, immortal species are not allowed. It's okay to have a species that lives tens of thousands of years, but declaring them fully immortal is off-limits. Since the first liches only date back to the Old Republic era (probably around 5,000 years ago, likely not more than 10,000 years), tens of thousands of years is a lifespan none of them will have exceeded anyway.
    • Perhaps the breakdown of memories and will you mentioned causes them to eventually dissolve, or perhaps their physical bodies can't survive forever, forcing the spirit to find a new body or perish.

  • We need more details / specifics in the Strengths and Weaknesses section.
    • What is a "being of the light" that can damage a phylactery? Is a Jedi a "being of the light", or would it have to be a light-side spirit? Please clarify this.
    • What does it mean to be "knowledgeable in necromancy"? Please specify a specific skill level.
    • What specific "mind bending abilities and effects" do the liches possess?
    • "Body can be destroyed like any other living being" isn't really a weakness. It's true of everyone.
    • What effect do fire and light-side abilities have on the lich?
    • Please remove all references to immortality / agelessness. They can decay slowly, and swap bodies, but they can't be stated to live forever.

Codex Judges aren't arbiters of balance, but I'll warn you that this is an extremely powerful submission, and once it's submitted anyone can use it. If someone abuses it and it gets reported to staff for being unbalanced, that will cause the submission to be reexamined by staff.

The Mongrel The Mongrel

Heard you loud and clear, while I can't be able to edit this tonight I wanna go ahead and and clarify to make sure I'm heading in the correct direction you want to see this go.

°Any mentions of immortality and agelessness needs to be removed: does this include the part stating it's a common goal of a Sith? Being it's just the statement, and does not mean this creature is immortal, but rather the outcome of the desire to be so? Either way I'll remove if so.

°Beings of light being anyone attuned to the light side of the Force, living or spirit. Should I instead make this light side abilities are required to destroy the Phylactery?

Good questions, Karthus Karthus .

You do not need to remove the mention of immortality as a goal, just statements that this species is definitively immortal.

Yes, I think it would be clearer to say that Light Side powers are what is required to destroy the phylactery.

The Mongrel The Mongrel

Edits made to insure the Lich is not perceived as Immortal and placed a finite number on theyre average age.
Fire is expanded on just how dangerous it is to the lich's body,
Expanded that because the use of necromancy is require to become a Lich, this in return has given liches a good deal of knowledge,
Changed the beings of light to simply light side abilities to destroy Phylactery.
Also removed the Mind Bending abilities, while it's typical in fantasy liches, there's nothing in this submission that even mentions such abilities.
Added the lich's body WILL eventually degrade and waste away with time.
