Faction The Barrier Within

ᴛʜᴀᴛ’ꜱ "ᴍɪꜱꜱ ɢʀᴀɴᴅᴍᴀꜱᴛᴇʀ" ᴛᴏ ʏᴏᴜ

Ala-project-2.png

Mist gathered like breath over the cascades of Naboo’s lake country, diffusing the light into a soft, endless glow. The rush of the waterfalls filled the air with quiet thunder, a sound that seemed to breathe in rhythm with the Force itself. Ala Quin stood upon the stones near the base of the falls, the hem of her robes dry despite the spray that wove silver threads all around her. A faint shimmer curved along the air between her and the water.

“The Force Barrier,” she said, her voice carrying easily through the mist, “is not built of strength alone. It is the conversation between your will and the world that would tear it down. It is the ultimate test of calm....of stillness even in the heat of battle.”

She lifted her hand, and the mist parted. The torrent fell inches from her outstretched palm, breaking and rejoining as though the air itself obeyed her unspoken request. Then she stepped forward. Across wet stone. Through the curtain of water. Her bare feet touched down on the other side without a drop upon them.

“The simplest defence,” Ala continued, “is to block. The truest defence is to control oneself. You will learn to hold your peace so wholly that nothing may unmake it.”

She turned, golden light flickering faintly around her frame, the soft edge of the Force drawn into visible grace. A gesture invited all who watched, Padawan, Knight, or wanderer, to step closer and try.

“The barrier is built by defiance...” she said, smiling faintly, "...but is the outflowing of the calm resolve of knowing and being. Give it a try...walk to this side of the waterfall. You have to start somewhere.”

Casaana stared wide-eyed at the Miss Grandmaster's demonstration, not that she was intimidated by meeting the head of the order. After all, she'd met several before, even dragged one's children into trouble. And after that dressing down, no intimidation could compare. But this barrier, Casaana could see the potential. She thought about all the times she'd been a hair's breadth away from death or serious injury and how nice it would have been to have a barrier of the living Force adding just that little extra protection. Like on Bogan when she'd used herself as a shield to protect Roman as they charged an entrenched repeater, or more recently on the Death Star III.

Defiance, she grinned thinking about it, she had that in spades if any disciplinarian was to be believed. Calmness was something else, that was boring... But Quin had said it was the calmness of self-assurance! And she had that! Deeply inhaling though her nose, she closed her eyes and nestled her awareness into the fog in the back of her awareness that was, to her, the Force. Then what? She cast her mind about, wrap herself in it, push outwards? Confidence! She took a step forward out onto the mist covered rocks at the base of the waterfall, then she reached her foot out to take another, confident in her peace, but not looking where she was going. Her foot missed the rocks and she fell over into the water downstream with a laughing "Ack!" as she was soaked.

The first student tried. The first student failed. And Ala — Grandmaster Quin — laughed.

It was a full, unrestrained laugh, the kind one gives when joy refuses to be hidden. The sound echoed through the mist, softening against the rush of the falls.

Fantastic! she said, eyes bright as she clapped her hands together. “Excellent attempt... Casaana, isn’t it?”

Ala crouched upon the rock, mist coiling around her in a perfect sphere that shimmered faintly with light.

“My word,” she grinned, “I haven’t seen someone fail that spectacularly since I first tried this myself. Well done!”

There was no mockery, only warmth. The Force pulsed lightly as she extended her hand, lifting the drenched Padawan effortlessly to her feet.

“Defiance of oneself,” Ala continued gently, “not of the water... not of the fists of the rancor beating against your barrier...no, no. Defiance of your own fear.”

With a soft pat to her lap and a chuckle, she stood again.

“Give it another go. You’re already wet — there’s no danger left in failing twice,” her tone softened into a knowing smile, “this time, no fear of water...no fear of embarrassment. Let it fall away. Not cockiness, but calmness.”

Casaana rolled her eyes, at least she was spectacular? "Thanks, yeah," she replied somewhat subdued when asked her name, accepting the offered hand and help getting out of the water. "I wasn't afraid." Water rained from her drenched cloths to the stones below, and the Padawan helped it by sluicing more of it out of her hair and squeezing it from her robes. "Just didn't know what to visualize."

A pair of deep breaths and Casaana was feeling re-centered, she let the emotions fall away as Master Qinn directed. Whispering, "an outflowing of calm, I am here." She summoned up the Force in the back of her mind, circulating its energies throughout her body and letting them flow outward before stepping once again onto the path. This time with her eyes open.

"It's a good necessary skill to have." The Jedi Knight spoke as they walked along the path of the lake country. "There are many that tend to overlook this ability, similar in many ways to tutaminis."

Aiden placed a hand on Kas's shoulder.

"This may be something you have had been taught before, but there is nothing wrong with going over it again. As Jedi, our learning never stops, and our abilities with the force will then increase."

Aiden removed his hand and placed it behind his back as the neared where Ala was already instructing Casaana.

"Master Quin, forgive our tardiness, that was my fault. I hope we are not too late."

Travelled back to familiar grounds, Kas flew his X-83 TwinTail starfighter to arrive inside the Shiraya Sanctuary's - Jedi Enclave hangar bay on the planet Naboo and close-by the capital city known as Theed. After docking his starfighter and joining his master's request - Aiden Porte to attend a training session that the new Jedi Grandmaster, to him, Ala Quin was hosting.

Once he met with the Jedi Knight through the Lake Country and walked the path alongside Aiden to participate in the lesson the Grandmaster was teaching to all and any students of the Jedi Order available those that sought to further their abilities and knowledge in the Force as Jedi.

"It is, yeah. At first I probably did underestimate the power and technique of this ability. It can not only can save my life but others as well, Master."

When his shoulder was met with the embracing hand of Aiden's there Kas' energy was booming. It surged for those who can sense spirits and signatures through the Force. The compassion the Padawan Learner possesses was of pure heart for others Kas will always care for others despite being the quiet type of individual yet dedicated, determined and focused to do and give his best.

"I'll always be learning and training, never know what's around the corner. I don't mind learning abilities, skills or theories again sometimes another could reveal another perspective and show me different aspects I didn't think of, Master."

After walking along the Lake Country pathway with Aiden and managed to find Casaan learning and training with the Grandmaster, Ala Quin, an individual that Kas recalls back on an assignment he undertook, a familiar face and voice reassured Kas. Now he will be learning and perhaps train with her, another Jedi Grandmaster he had managed to meet.

"Apologies Grandmaster, didn't think we'd be late to your session. Ready to learn and make it up to you, Master."

"Confidence you have in your imagination, hmmm?" Ala said, with a smile towards the young girl, "I can imagine a wall that shelters you from water...that will work for water."

She spun about on her heels, and plonked down on a rock under the torrent of rain. The arc of the water washed around her perfectly. Her butt though...was immediately wet. Even Master's made mistakes.

Ala squirmed, and got up again to walk towards the shoreline. Nothing she could say would be heard from under a torrent of water.

"Aiden Porte...and Kas Larsen...greetings! You are not late. You are just on time," she said, smile so broad that it threatened to take over her face.

"No need to perform any penance, Kas," Ala shook her head with a laugh, "I am not here to punish you for tardiness. Missing an opportunity to learn is punishment enough."

Spinning back on her heel, she pointed towards the row of rocks that lined up along the waterfall. "Padawan Casaana is about to have another go. Before you do though..."

"Visualisation is a crutch. A short cut to accomplishing a semblance of this abilities limits. But visualisation limits the ability to the point where you imagination ends. Don't visualise a barrier that stops the water. Just...walk though and...don't let...the water touch you. Your will against the will of the water."

She turned towards Aiden and Kas. "You two can go after, Padawan Casaana."

Stood by his master's side as they made their approach to the area where Padawan Casaana and Master Quin began their training session. The technique being taught was one Kas had learn and began developing in his various points of Jedi training on Jakku and Tython. All he did was bow his head over Ala and spoke softly to not disrupt Casaana's concentration when having another go.

"Of course, Grandmaster. Thanks for letting us join you."

The air and atmosphere that was present within the Lake Country was rather pleasant and relaxing. Kas was able to relief himself from stress and tension usually is one to keep himself occupied both mentally and physically. When there are opportunities to pause and rest he takes it but doesn't like to linger idle for too long. Quietly he whispered to Aiden while waiting for his turn.

"A lot has changed since I was last around. Old and new faces going on different journeys, Master. It is good to be back on Naboo, been too long."

When Jedi Master; Ala Quin described to both Aiden and Kas in how to imagine in harnessing the Force Barrier ability upon them Kas quietened his mind, eyes closing over. Casting away what he saw at present and drew upon the Force, only just picturing his body walking into the pool of water, his will in forming a barrier over himself, opposing the ripples of the water as it had a will of its own to contest Kas.

AT THE WATERFALLS
LAKE COUNTRY, NABOO

It had been a good while since Toby last attended a class.

Beyond the foundation he was given before committing full time to this path two years before, relatively little of his Jedi pursuits for over a year now had to do with strong defense or offence, for the greatest breadth of his knowledge was more academic in nature, and along lines that employed his intellect. But the stars implored him to do more, be more. Or maybe it was that It was harder as of late to separate one part of his pursuits, viewing and study of this less familiar night sky, from the knowledge of what those stars and their systems held... or no longer held.

And the friends he'd lost contact with, that weighed on his mind. Friends he hadn't seen in too long as their little brigade of padawans dispersed, pulled apart by what was beyond the ability of any of them to control. Pulling far from the Jedi home they once had. A home on Coruscant that no Jedi could return to, now. An Alliance torn asunder by the enduring bloom of evil. At times, he couldn't help but feel he'd been a coward for leaving, the year prior. And it was this and other feelings that gnawed at him the longer he delayed learning more about things that had little to do with the brilliance of his mind.

So he'd detached himself from the Archives and made his way here, taking in the scenery along the way, and arrived in a mood of relative peace. The young Corellian was relieved to hear that the people just ahead of him weren't deemed late by the Grandmaster, as he arrived just after them, and waited, not wishing to interrupt them, but he was hard to miss, given he could stand shoulder to shoulder with Kas' master. Lanky, present, and ready to learn.

While waiting for his turn, Toby considered the mechanics of how the barrier was deployed — that depth of understanding was an inextricable part of how he learned, for how, exactly, that the Force worked was a suite of his many early questions, when his time was still split between school and learning enough control and discipline to be able to harness the power within him. A time that included learning to settle, let the questions rest, and feel.

Despite that early knowledge, harnessing and deploying the energy outward to create a barrier wasn't sustainable at this point. He needed practice. He needed to gain the perspectives of other Jedi. Imagining the barrier from various inspirations had made for a barrier that was fleeting: waves crashed, strong winds were not constant, great for moments of instinctive, reactionary blips of shielding, but not great for maintaining a barrier. All that would suffice in this case was the shaping of energy... and maintaining it by force of will, as the Grandmaster said.

Will.

The same damned block he stumbled over in other areas, like stronger forms of telekinesis.

Toby frowned a little. Early mentors had assured him this was fine, that such strength would come with time and use. When he asked his eldest brother about it, back then, it was explained that he was strongest in times of need, protecting himself and others, and resisting against the evils of this galaxy. Both espousing the same answer, ‘cause he certainly hadn’t seen much action like that. He needed less than five fingers to count what dangers he’d encountered.

And what was he resisting here? Getting wet. Oh, and the possibility of slipping off of wet stones. Embarrassing, hardly life-threatening… but maybe he was looking at it all wrong. Rik had also said it was his beliefs, his convictions, and those he cared about that granted him strength, when Toby had questioned further. Things that seemed so abstract when he was a kid. So, what did he believe? What truly drove him to seek further training like this, why now?

The answer was simple. The Republic, and by extension the Jedi Order that called this peaceful planet home, was surrounded by evil. Now the only bastion of light and democracy in a sea of darkness, crime, and neutrality. The same evils that ultimately caused him to be here, and in some ways, starting over. The same ones that had whittled away the Alliance and left his family and homeworld more open to conquest than it’d been since long before he was born.

It wasn't the perceptions of others, or anything of the sort. It was probability that drove him to action. Probability and the desire to do what he could to ‘change the galaxy’s stars’, so to speak, because he knew the history, he knew the patterns. He didn't want to live with regret.

With that, he realised how he might resolve that block, once and for all: strength of will wasn't born out of imagination, it was fueled by conviction and vigilance. Preventing undesirable outcomes. He could very well have everything he needed. Toby refocused, wearing a firm smile as he returned to watching those ahead of him while they made their passes under the waterfall.

Awaiting his turn, to put this reframing into practise.

Aiden stood beside Kas, the breath of the Lake Country brushing across the terraces in a gentle, rhythmic tide. He'd always liked this place, its peace was never quiet, exactly. It breathed. It listened. And in rare moments like this, it softened even the edges of his own discipline.

Kas' whisper drew his gaze sideways.

Aiden offered a small smile, tight, but warm. "The Order moves like the current," he murmured back. "Changing shape, never stopping. You've been missed in it."

His tone softened further as Kas closed his eyes and began sinking into the meditative exercise Ala Quin had set before them.

Aiden watched him for a moment, not evaluating. Observing, the way a teacher watches someone rediscover a part of themselves.

When hearing the words from Aiden's whispering to him, Kas took note that times have changed since he was last on Naboo. Not surprised but he felt a little out of sync. There'd perhaps be a lot to catch-up with considering the Galaxy itself had changed. A darker presence was felt more in the Core and Deep Core regions. It was time to pursue the dark with the light by his side.

"I'm not surprised, Master. I'd be concerned if it wasn't adapting and changing."

The hushed and whispered tone from Kas served as a response to Aiden who spoke in a murmured and quieter tone to not disturb the Grandmaster; Ala Quin and Padawan Learner; Casaana all while meditating to focus on the Living Force energy around him. There was someone else approaching, now present, Kas sensed it through the Force, their presence swirling around his senses.

"Sorry that I missed it. I was studying and training back on Jakku, the Jedi Enclave situated there."

Silence fell upon Kas as his concentration was to focus on the exercise in drawing his own energy and welcome the Lightside of the Force in to his body and mind. It is always welcomed like an ally in Kas' perspective whenever he channels the Force around and within himself. Remembering what training he started from those who initiated his Jedi training in the Force.

Listening to the Grandmaster, that visualization might work for this task, but would fail and hamper her in the future, she let it go. Instead she stepped forward with the knowledge that the water simply wouldn't touch her. Not wanting to be further distracted, she did her best to block out the newcomers, how they felt through the Force and their conversations between themselves and Ala Quin, and the creeping feeling that taking her time preparing was holding up their own practice.

So instead of taking another deep breath or mentally preparing herself any further, she stepped forward into the mist of the falls. Setting herself up any further would be pointless, the water wasn't going to touch her. And it didn't, her skin cooled with the air under the falls, but she stepped through without getting wet. Or wetter, after her earlier fall.

Reaching the other side, she let her tenuous grasp on her mental state go, jumping into the air, fist raised in triumph. "Did it Miss Grandmaster!" Waving towards the other's, she beckoned them over, inviting them to join her in personal victory as she called out to them. "Come on! It's easy once you do it!" No doubt it'd take a great deal of training to achieve the same results with blasters or projectiles, but today she'd started down the path of competency.

"YUUUUUUS!" Ala burst into a cheer along with Casaana.

"That was amazing! You did so well!" She practically bounced over toward the padawan and tousled her hair like it was allowed.

Her eyes looked up towards the remainder of the students that had assembled.

"Remember. The Force flows through us all. It connects us...to the rocks...the trees..." Her hands swept about directing their attention to various objects she referenced, "...to energy itself...when you really feel the Force flow through you...when you are at peace...the barrier is just like a body walking through water. The water parts...because that is what water does when pressured by a solid."

She glanced at Casaana and winked. Ala's hand had stretched out, palm up, the mist drifted around an unseen ball in her hand. The object moved forward, into the waterfall, a small sphere only seen because of the effect it had on the water that went around it.

"You can have so much fun with this when you realise there are no true limitations," she said before looking back at the others, "come on! Walk through the water without getting wet...ya scaredy cats!"

Opened his eyes to see what Casaana was able to do throughout the training session that they underwent with Grandmaster Quin. Displayed the use of Force Barrier, a technique to prevent the waters flowing make contact with Casaana's person, she did it. A smile appeared on Kas' face in being apart of another's success. All while present with Aiden, his master, Miss Ala Quin, the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order and a fellow Padawan Learner; Toby Perris.

"Hey! Well done, Casaana looks like you got it."

Looks like it'll be everyone else's turns to participate in the training exercise that the Grandmaster had set before them. A glance from Kas to the others; Aiden and Toby, he had cleared his mind and opened to the Living Force energy. Inhaled some air in and exhaled out to initiate both his body and mind to be calm, focused and relaxed. It was time to test his ability in using the Force.

"I guess it is my turn, eh Master."

The energy from the Force was starting to draw towards Kas all while he began to channel and focus. Opening himself up to the Force letting an energy field take its form over his body. It pulsed around as the barrier was starting to take the shape Kas was picturing in his mind before he would begin to take the same path that Casaana took into the water. Wary of its own energy.

"Good thing Cade and Kharis aren't here. They'd get a laugh with me faceplanting into the waters here. No going back now."

VODvMcu.png

Aiden shook his head, showing a small smile. "Forgive me, that wasn't meant to be something of dissapointment. I'm just glad you are back and knowing that you are safe." Aiden chuckled lightly. "Well, as safe as any Jedi can be nowadays."

His attentioned turned to Ala, with a smirk as her excitement about Casaana, made him chuckle lightly. He was happy to know she was here and back amongst them. The events on Kattabis, were something to crazy to even begin to describe. However she was here, and that showed a rise in spirits, not just in hers, but in Lorn and Isla's as well. Whom were, for all intents and purposes his family.

"Good thing Cade and Kharis aren't here. They'd get a laugh with me faceplanting into the waters here. No going back now."

"You're gonna be fine, don't think too much. Just do." He said with a small smirk as he stood back, hands behind his back. He gave a small nod and bow towards Ala.
