The Bad Seed's Fruit

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

The town of Ozryn. . . . .

Alva looked at the name of the village that was listed in the documents in front of her. It was one of the few times she had a break from working for the Remnant as an Officer or the one in control of the Andreea Shipyards. She was spending it within the archive library of Crina's Royal Palace, her home as the second princess of the world. There had been so many things for her to do lately and they still kept piling up, but at the same time there was a lot of fighting for her to do as well. Fighting that was becoming extremely dangerous. She had participated in the Tournament of the Gods, and it was an experience she would not forget. It irked her that the Royal Guard's armor had been complete for her use during it, but she had it now so she was stronger there. Time needed to be set aside so that she could return to the Cosmina Academy as well. If she wanted to stand a better chance in the future she needed to expand her prowess as a Practitioner until she was a master. She had defeated two Sith knights on just her martial prowess and the level of her equipment alone. She had increased the level of her equipment, but she needed more. . . . .

So here she was, delving through ancient records some centuries old. Information on Crina and Nicoleta and the rebel leader's infamous apprentice and short lived second in command, this was what was laid out before her. All the data that the Royal Family had on them. The Cosmina Academy had some files as well back from their Academy days, for Nicoleta and her apprentice at least. However, what Alva sought was their personal research. The most powerful Practitioners in Crina's history, outside the First Practitioner and his famed master never cited except in legend. There was no information on those two though, so Alva restricted her search to just the other three. Crina was a true master, a woman and Queen and hero their world was named for even. However, there was not much the woman had kept hidden. Much of Crina's research and abilities she developed had been taken directly into the Cosmina Academy's database, they were open for everyone to study and made up part of the curriculum. Very little was hidden, Alva suspected that though that Crina did have some forbidden teachings, but had had them destroyed or hidden by the Cosmina Academy Masters at the time of her death.

Nicoleta on the other hand was perhaps the most mysterious. There were reports of various different abilities and a few of those did not match what the Academy taught or what was mentioned in historic texts either. However, the mysteries of Nicoleta would be hard to find. Her hometown had been burned down during the civil war, though it had since been rebuilt. The woman had also disappeared, none knew how she died or where or when she had or where she was buried, no one had a clue as to what happened to the famous resistance movement founder and respected Practitioner. The best estimates one had to go by for information on Nicoleta would have been Rebel Hideouts in the period of her leadership, but those were always cleared out and always moving even up until the end. Truly only Rodica in its entirety left any clues as to what Nicoleta may have hidden away or left behind. Ruins were rumored to have existed there, perhaps she visited them. Perhaps that would be worth a trip, Nicoleta had the famed blade of the First Practitioner all Crinan Energy Blades were based on, finding that in itself would boost her abilities, but at the same time it would be a longer journey.

So the simplest and easiest solution lay in Nicoleta's apprentice. A woman who was hated to the point her very name was stricken by demand of Nicoleta's followers and Cosmina's Practitioners. Someone who had betrayed Nicoleta when the rebel founder took her famed venture to Rodica and established a colony there, who had stolen a famed relic of the Practitioner community, of their world, and was revealed for the corrupt individual she was. However, she was the most well known. It was this failed apprentice's capture that had led to the creation of the Crinan Energy Blades existence, and it was in many records and historical documents that she used dark powers in the battles during the civil war she participated in. Powers one normally wouldn't learn on Crina, at least not with experimentation and research, and it was clear the woman had never left their world.

Alva did her best, there were some hints of the interrogations back from when the girl had been taken in, but they lacked much insight on her abilities. Most questions had been about Rebel Troop movements, base locations, inquiries directed towards the weapon the woman had wielded at the time, what Nicoleta was doing, how the rebel leader pulled off so many miracles, but nothing about her own abilities either despite battlefield accounts mentioning they were impressive and forbidden according to Practitioners of the time. However, there was one bit of information Alva had to go off of. The town of Ozryn. Nicoleta's apprentice was an enemy to all after her betrayal came to light. The Rebels, Royal Army, and Cosmina's Practitioners all hunted for her. So why had she been in the town of Ozryn when she was captured?

It was neither her hometown or a known rebel base. In addition, captured rebel documents indicated Nicoleta's apprentice would steal away somewhere unknown sometimes in that general area, part of the clues that had enabled the Royal Army to lead them to her. So what had she been doing there? There were other towns as well, but the woman had been caught after apparently returning to the town from a countryside trip. The village had been abandoned shortly after, already becoming desolate as the war ran down the once mercantile town's business down. The stigma of harboring the failed apprentice that fell on them finished the job. It was hardly visited except for idle passersby curious as to what the place was like or to take shelter on the roads duirng bad weather.

It was the closest clue there was to anything. So Alva pulled out her communicator, making a call to her younger sister as she gathered up all her compiled data on the fallen girl, a once shining example of Crina, a student and apprentice of the famed Nicoleta, a traitor and thief, a woman so hated her name was stricken, and who ended up as little more than a mindless little slave for palace fun as a lowly servant. "Utena, whatever you're doing you're dropping it to help me. I have a fun treasure hunt planned and want you to join me, I need someone I can trust to keep a secret and who I can share this with if needed."

Utena was working on trying to use a rifle.. for protection and she stood there when she got the message from Alva.... She did as requested and the rifle dropped to the ground as it went off and one of the squadmates from Valkyrie yelped as Utena turned around and was looking at her with daggers coming from her eyes as Utena casually moved to the side smiling nervously... She had gotten lucky the girl had her armor on but then there was a stunner and Utena was running as the woman was yelling. "Princess I am going to get you come back here..." Utena kept running and shouted going through the halls... She had to be getting sore soon it was a shot to the butt. "Come on Nya you can barely notice it you had enough junk back there for some protection..." That might not have been the best thing to say as it only seemed to make the woman faster and Utena ran jumping into a transport to go to her sister as she closed the door. She was heading towards Alva and the comlink was yelling for her as she wiped the sweat from her brow and whistled. The trip to find Alva and meet up with her brought her around awhile later and Utena had cleaned up a little standing there now. "Alva I am here... ah Nya might say I shot her in the butt but I swear it was just a graze and now she is going to get more attention back there. So all works out."

For some reason. . . .Utena wasn't be very timely at all.

Alva found herself alone on the platform in the Palace's hanger where the Royal Squadron and many of the Royal Family and the Palace's staff had several transports. Plenty of time had been spent picking up all the research materials in the library she had gathered on all three of Crina's most historic Practitioners. It had taken a while to clean up and put back all of the books, files, and records she had taken from the shelves and cases. Then there had been another period of time spent making sure she had all her jotted notes and the data she had compiled from what she had been reading. All this and still Utena had shown up late somehow. . . .

How was it that someone given so many opportunities to become the best she could be always seemed to blow it off! That wasn't fair she supposed, but dammit Alva was the older sister and she knew Utena had a solid chance at the throne too someday if the girl honestly tried. her little sister could be a Master Practitioner, a Chief Politician, an Heroic Commander, even the next Queen! Alva had hoped Valkyrie Squad could have gotten the other girl into shape and take things seriously but somehow it seemed Utena had made them less sticks in the mud instead, not that that was entirely bad but it hadn't been the desired outcome. Still, at the very least the group liked Utena, and Utena was trying some things and the Squad was helping her feel comfortable doing them. . . .

All the same it didn't do anything about the fact Alva had been sitting in the hanger spending her time once again checking her theories and the data she had backing them until Utena finally did arrive. "How did you shoot her in the butt and if you were running from her how in Crina did you manage to clean up so nicely before getting here. Did you dash through the showers while being chased?" Not at all speaking sarcastically, Alva sighed and waved Utena towards a shuttle sitting around empty she had logged for her use for the day. "Come on already, I want to get this done before it gets too dark. I hope you don't mind, but this is going to end up being a lot of work actually."

[member="Alva Calvarona"]

To the first she thought about it. "Ahhh uhhhh there might have been a little excitement when you commed me and the gun might have accidentally dropped firing... Totally on accident though no one to blame." She had a small smile on her face looked at her sister and brushing her hair a little more while she stood there and just moved tapping her sisters shoulder. "come on now this is going to be a fun time, it isn't often we get to go out and do things or run around... Imagine all the fun we can have here or anywhere on the world... it is our pysters while big sis is away... we get to play."

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

"So you're not trying to say its my fault then for comming you? at the time" Alva held a smirk on her face as she said it knowing her sister hadn't meant it like that, or maybe she did, but either way she was going to sound like she thought Utena did and see how her little sister reacted. In the meanwhile she turned to the back of the transport and started mentally checking off the list of equipment she believed they would require and had stashed back there. A pair of Crinan Combat Armor suits were back there, some carbines with cable launchers, energy blades for cutting if needed, shovels, chiseling tools and dusters, explosives, handheld sensors, even some food and blankets if they decided to stay for the night if it took them that long. Once she was satisfied that everything, including her notes and data, were all there, Alva nodded to herself feeling ready to depart just as Utena tapped her shoulder and said something so mischievous.

"Yeah you're right. While she's away she gets to miss out on our little adventure here. We're going to find something amazing and secret and we're not going to share any of it with her. Let's go, if we have to do a lot of work for this I don't want us to waste any more time getting there than we have to." Laughing with her sister as she climbed into the transport, Alva spent a few minutes bringing the ship online and messaging the hanger control to open the shutters for them to leave, and then they were gone. It would still take an hour or so for them to reach Ozryn, mostly because it was hard to find on a map since it was abandoned and no longer charted except in old logs. Once they got there though they would be able to see its abandoned Pracitioner tower in the distance, a cracked and worn bastion in the empty fields next to nowhere. A place that had thrived on being a hub rather than agricultural center, and that cost it after it no longer found itself appreciated after Nicoleta's apprentice left them in disgrace for harboring her unknowingly.

Utena didn't answer that let it be a mystery if Alva cause the person to get shot or if it had been Utena being a klutz... The world might never know much like how many licks it took to get to the center of a lollipop... or why Crina's liked Crinian Toast Crunch... She was looking to move and at the equipment they had just in case while loading up her equipment then following. She was looking at the one map and they were searchign for a place off the map... "Should we be using one of the older maps? Like something that shows what we want... we could even make it a transparent film to put over the others and make it easier to find." She smiled securing the armor for her own protection and brushing a bang to the side of her head.

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

That would have been nice, but annoying enough between the loss of some records in the civil war during unfortunate damage to information centers, as well as the Imperials irritating fight to move some things to data over physical form, which had been thankfully stopped though, there was no map, at least not within the palace. Maybe one of the other old libraries or archives had one. Cosmina or maybe even Miruna might have held an old map complete with Ozryn's location, but then traveling all the way out there might take longer in the end. After all, if Ozryn was in the opposite direction they would have been wasting their time. "We would if there had been one. . . . but from my notes I've marked where it should be . . . . .just there!"

Off in the distance a spire rising into the sky could be clearly seen, the remains of the Practitioner's spire in the once thriving market hub of Ozryn. A proud structure, one that symbolized the presence of a protector or wise scholar who was there for the people. Empty and abandoned and ruined, along with the rest of the village it stood with. A hopeless place, and the spot most likely where their searches and efforts would bear the most fruit. Something was in this town somewhere, hidden away within one of the homes, or maybe someplace around it. "I'm taking us down, get everything ready." Veering the craft towards the discovered ruins, Alva scowled more than smiled. Her excitement toned by her determination to uncover something to grow stronger.

Utena gave a nod of her head while she was getting the equipment ready to go while she was rolling her shoulders. The enjoyment of this and anticipation in her mind of them finding lost treasures and mysterious research. Something lost from Crina's history was there and she wanted to see it while they were moving towards the ground to come in. She had her pack and equipment ready for what they would need all of it from climbing gear to food cubes and rations. She was all ready to go and explore while Alva set them down and joined her.

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

Since there was no one around Alva first figured she might put the craft down in the very center of the village right next to the tower, but at the same time the thought occurred to her the secrets they were searching for might be just around it as well. So with that in mind she instead dropped the transport into the grassy field just outside the former market hub's boundaries, where a small farm could be seen, a single home's efforts to make a garden on the outskirts essentially. Once landed Crina's second princess joined the third in the back of their small craft as they gathered supplies and equipment, a grin tugging on her face as she was actually excited to be doing this all just with her sister, just some sibling fun exploring it felt like back in their childhood when they roamed the palace. "Make sure you have everything Utena. We'll cross the short distance to the village and then start working our way around the outer buildings. Well only if you think we should search the residential district where she supposedly stayed. The Practitioner's tower is where she most likely stayed, but it is so obvious she may not have actually done so, and kept her secrets elsewhere if she had any. What do you think?"

Saying this as she shouldered her pack and checked stowed her energy blade and carbine, Alva exited their ship to prompt Utena to get moving since they might as well make the decision as they headed toward the village proper.

[member="Alva Calvarona"]

"If she was smart the tower would be obvious, it would have been the first place searched by anyone looking if they came here. We would be better served looking for those antechamber things people use to hide stuff and the residential area." She gave a shrug and was looking at what she did have to use while moving about with her gear and loading it into the pack while she had it secured. A satchel with equipment she might need and need to get to quick while she blew out a line. "Besides we have plenty of time to look around and search, never know what else we might find."

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

Alva sighed, knowing that Utena said was true, but all the same the older of the sisters wasn't as thrilled to search every nook and cranny considering it would just be the two of them. The pay off wasn't real, all the excitement drained out of her for a time as they made their approach toward the city's outermost ring of houses. They appeared to have landed near the residential district interestingly enough, so at the very least at the end of the day when they returned to their ship they wouldn't have to spend as much time walking back than if they had started off closer to the market end of the town. "That does sound true. Let's just beeline to the tower the and check it quickly for any hidden mechanisms. Then we'll hit its surrounding residential area and then sweep the rest. That's probably best."

[member="Alva Calvarona"]

Utena gave a nod of her head to her sister for the plan. searching the tower would yield she suspected not enough to find the research but there might be clues as to where the research notes were or something. There might be a map with a large X leading them down into some ancient cave system where they face the unimaginable before finding what they wanted while she started walking off towards the tower with a smile on her face. She wiped at her brow where the air and heat was making the sweat begin easily enough with the weight of her gear. It was unexpected and she wasn't used to it but she could handle it.

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

If there was something as obvious as a map with a large X on it then Alva would lose all respect for her own people and their history if anyone from legend was truly that idiotic. . . . . not that a time saver at all wouldn't be appreciated considering they were probably looking to end up staying more than just one night. Unless they were extremely lucky. Alva was just thankful at the very least the town was only a moderately sized village back in the day. It wasn't as large as most thriving market towns back then due to its location, and communities only expanded over time. So it was lucky enough as it was for the two princesses that the area had been abandoned after the capture of Nicoleta's apprentice. Although judging from how her sister was looking maybe she could have landed their craft closer to the village outskirts to skim down the trip, but then it was good exercise and maybe it would prompt Utena to actually get training in like she was supposed to.

After all there was a family reputation to uphold, plus she didn't want her little sister being too weak to defend herself. If something happened to her then Alva would be rather. . . . upset. This trip to find new ways to grow in power would be beneficial to Utena as well hopefully, if her sister had the ability to learn whatever secrets Nicoleta's apprentice left behind. Alva did hope she was at least trying a little to keep up magic. "Almost there. We can also consider leaving our equipment there since its a central location. That way we aren't as burdened walking around, though if we find anything we'll need the shovels or explosives for we'd have to come back for them, what do you think? Or maybe we should see about keep our fingers crossed that we'll be lucky and find it on the first try at the tower, though it would be a little disappointing if it was that easy."

[member="Alva Calvarona"]

Utena kept moving with her sister and gave a nod of her head, she wasn't fully incompetent she knew how to do things... and other things... Now that she thought about it she knew lots of things. Her smile though looking at her sister while she focused on her magic abilities and she had a few tricks mostly she knew how to totally make things fling across the room.. or maybe that had just been when she wanted to sleep in but either way she knew the chrono had went from her nightstand across the room out the window and into the face of a passing guard. She had been in the bed the entire time and they had blamed it on a ghost she was certain it had been. "We'll find it, no rush Alva... the tower, the town, some secret S&M dungeon filled with turn of the century toys that make the hardlight projectors or some of the fuzzy binders big sis has in her closet... We'll see it all and face it then have stories to tell."

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

Passing by the outskirts of the village at last and growing closer to the Practitioner's Tower, Alva checked her map as they moved through the edge of the ruins of the abandoned town. If anything stood out when it shouldn't or seemed to be good condition still then she wanted to mark it for being more likely to have salvageable research. Although of course the second princess wasn't quite sure how Nicoleta's Apprentice would hide her research studies. Just a coded journal? A full room of books of lost forbidden knowledge? Just how did Nicoleta's apprentice and once second in command grow in power, and how did they work to acquire it? These were the questions Alva asked her. . . . at least until Utena interrupted her thoughts and nearly made her stumble laughing with how simply silly the other girl was. "You really are. . . . .something Utena. I'll be sure to let sis know when she finds out we left her out of this that it was your idea and that you seem to be fond of those fuzzy binders since you appear to have them on your mind."

There really wasn't anything wrong with Utena's less serious nature, it was enjoyable especially considering how focused Alva knew she could be on her goals and work. At the same time though she wasn't above taking sarcastic remarks or making false threats at her little sister's expense. It was Utena's fault for being youngest and that was it. "Although if we do find something to make us both stronger Practitioners maybe if she comes after you then you can force the fuzzy binders on her for a change. So. . . .what should we do?" Standing in front of the tower at last was a little awe inspiring. it was similar in appearance to many others on Crina, but its age and the potential mysteries locked within somehow made it feel grander. Alva found herself a little lost now as to where to begin their search. Well other than inside, but before that Alva paused to set down her gear as she dug out her notes and started to check through some again for any clue the Rebel Founder's fallen apprentice may have mentioned about the tower or Ozryn in recordings of her capture.

[member="Alva Calvarona"]

Well of course she did.. fuzzy binders were a thing as Utena was looking around and at her sister with a smile at that comment. Forcing their big sis to do something sounded more fun then it should in the end but she wasn't above it.. She was the youngest and while they stood there put her gear down before walking towards the tower and spreading her feet apart. She touched the stone work while planting herself then pushed off it speaking. "OPEN SAYS-A-ME" Utena closed her eyes and her arms shot out a little while she didn't look to see if it... not yet. Then several heartbeats passed as she opened one eye and was looking at the wall. Then more while she opened the other looking around and blowing a huff of air that pushed a bang out of the way. "Worth a shot."

@[member="Utena Calvarona"]

Did that really just happen?

Did that honestly just actually happen? Alva held a hand to her head as she set down the equipment in her own hands onto the ground in front of the tower entrance. Utena truly was simply that kind of person. Her little sister's antics astounded her sometimes, they were just too unbelievable and Alva couldn't tell half the time if Utena was serious about them or if they were all calculated and done because she was just light spirited. Either way, Alva pinched the bridge of her nose knowing how embarrassed she would be if Utena had done something like that in front of a crowd. All the same she chose not to acknowledge it as she moved to open the door, and then proceeded to get furious once she discovered it was locked.

Now the fact the door to a private tower for a Practitioner from hundreds of years ago was sealed wasn't that much of a surprise. However, the little irritations just built up in a manner that it was the last straw. So Alva debated two choices. Cut it open with one of the energy blades, or break it down with a strong burst of gathered wind. . . . . . a few seconds later the flinging of the door across the interior of the tower's first floor indicated her final decision making process. "Open says me. .. . ." Grumbling a little as she picked up her sister's joke, Crina's second princess picked up her pack once more and headed inside. "Look for any hidden panels or latches for a compartment in the floor that would lead to a bunker below or something. Heck maybe she was dumb enough to leave notes in the study above, and the army officers who caught her were dumb enough to leave things here after shutting it. If not we'll start hitting the streets in the vicinity for places she might've stayed based of records."

[member="Alva Calvarona"]

Utena looked at her and started searching for panels or alcoves while she spoke. "Never know it could have totally worked and then who would be the one with egg on their face?" She held the smile while searching and came away with some dust and cobwebs while her hand pushed aside some in an alcove. She was reaching in and came away with some insects before jumping back and forth on her feet. "Ah ew ew ew ew ew." Utena shook them off as she was looking... "Where is a flame thrower when you need it, there might be something here."

[member="Utena Calvarona"]

Well honestly Alva doubted she would have egg on her face. Rather history would, everyone with intelligence would. Sometimes her sister simply amazed her, and other times she made her feel stressed out. Utena's remarks made Alva pause to center herself and try and slip into a simple and short relaxation technique. Ever since that tournament in the outside galaxy, which she lost in the third round after defeating two Sith knights with her meager skills, the second princess of Crina had been working to increase her abilities. She had found her limits of her techniques and now she just had to push herself further into the depths of magic. She had even recently went to watch the demonstrations put on by the Master Practitioner of Cosmina Academy. It had been rather informative.

Yet as Alva slipped into the calm breathing pattern she felt herself more receptive to something nagging at her. There was. . . .a shadow lurking in this place. The more she focused on it, the more she felt a sick darkness lingering. It felt like it came from the tower itself, but more so the more she directed her thoughts downward. Opening her eyes Alva saw Utena try and reach her hand into an alcove only to pull back with a cluster of insects. . . .which was EW and rather disgusting. However, what Alva felt made her sharply call out to her sister. "Don't touch that!" There was something with ill intent in there, Alva could feel it so faintly. The revolting insects had made their home comfortably in there, whatever it was home to wasn't nice, Alva let her senses extend toward it, feeling the shape of a device within. What it would do if pulled she wasn't sure, but she just knew there was a touch of bad about it.

What was this? Alva hadn't felt anything approaching, but she normally wouldn't think she would feel something at all. This felt like some of the older relics in the Cosmina Academy's archives. They always said the objects were touched by their owners and had imprints from when they were used. Many students learned to feel that association though it was incredibly basic. Normally this implied strength of the user to leave that effect on an item. Or an event significant enough to give it a meaning. it was faint here, but for there to be a bit of a presence, with the hint of darkness. Nicoleta's apprentice must truly have wielded a bit of the power the records say, and whatever she was working on her had a malevolence about it.

Following that malevolence, Alva found a different alcove from Utena's. This one across the room and covered by a slide away tile, protected from the entrance of many insects. It had been touched many times by the apprentice who lost their name, its use leaving a bit of her to mark it, and once pulled it would function. Alva heard the grinding behind her as part of the floor slid away, revealing a set of stairs descending below, old lights flickering on as power came to them once more. "The soldiers who captured Nicoleta's failed apprentice didn't find this. The Royalists didn't want the Practitioners to know they aimed to keep her lightsaber tool to develop the energy blades we've been using since. And since everyone's avoided this place out of stigma and superstition. . . . let's go. I want to see what she had that left such a mark on this place."

[member="Alva Calvarona"]

Utena looked at her sister as she heard the sounds and smiled preparing. The mention of the energy blade and its origins was important as she moved about with her hand at the ready. She was looking towards it all before speaking. "Alright lets go." She had a few ideas of what they might find and all seemed to be bad or worse. She expected something good but people had went through great lengths to hide this, to keep it buried and something like that wasn't usually easy to overcome. She had a few ideas through now standing there and breathing it all in before going with her. "I just hope there isn't some twelve foot monster in there with cybernetics or something like a dragon."
