DESCRIPTION
Over five hundred years ago, a boy was born to two parents whose love was extremely questionable. The boy’s name was Demetrius, and he was the first born son of Jonathan deWinter and Taylor Correli. The former was a mad man who birthed over a hundred children, and the latter was a woman who was completely and utterly obsessed with him. The two struck a contract upon marriage, dictating that Taylor would provide an average of one offspring a year for at least fifteen years, and in return, Jonathan would remain faithful to her for the rest of their natural lives. Taylor fulfilled her end of the bargain, giving Jonathan nearly twenty children before she could continue no longer. Jonathan never kept his own word.

While Demetrius was the first born of the pair, he was by no means his father’s first, and he was not a very strong child either. He constantly found himself being bullied by his younger siblings as well as by Tabitha, a half sibling who wanted to take his father away from their family. The family never knew stability, living on a small ship that was much too overcrowded for their growing numbers, but Jonathan never made enough credits to buy something more permanent, or better.

Demetrius’ salvation was in finding tutelage with a distant family member, a Sith Lord by the name of Cameron Centurion. However, despite his master’s control of the Force, the boy turned out to be inherently weak. His abilities with the Force were lacking, and it was quite obvious from an early point that he would be neither Sith Warrior nor Sith Sorcerer. Little else could be entertained by those involved due to the culture of some planet Demetrius had never heard of, called Endelaan.

But while Demetrius tried to train and become better, his siblings found trainers as well, some with Cameron Centurion, others with Shery deWinter, and some more with masters whose names have been lost to history. And they were all better than Demetrius.

Demetrius discovered soon that he much rather preferred to read and study instead of try to expand on his abilities with the Force. It was by pure chance that he heard a conversation in which Sith Alchemy was mentioned, which made him return to his books and study the subject further. Thanks to Centurion’s resources, he found that as long as he remained away from his parents, he could experiment and create things that required more of a scientific approach, and somewhat less Force abilities that were once expected of him.

Demetrius was nearly fifty when he met a young woman by the name of Antimony. Antimony was a nobody who had also come from a broken home like his, but she was not a Force User and would never become one. She loved his gentleness, his quietness, and he loved her for her youth and her heart. The two were married in secret and enjoyed two decades together, during which they birthed three wonderful children.

But Demetrius knew their happiness was borrowed. He thanked the Force every day for those two decades, and set out to create a ring that would protect his wife and his children. For three years he experimented, knowing that Antimony had nothing that could protect her from other Force Users, and knowing that his family members would try to hurt her when he was no longer around to offer at least protection by name. By the end of the three years, he had managed to make use of Sith Alchemy in order to create the first ring – the Amddiffyniad, the protector. Demetrius died before he could make more.

Antimony gave the ring to their eldest son, a boy called Gaston deWinter. She died of heartbreak shortly thereafter, leaving their three children to fend for themselves.

Gaston’s line continued, as Gaston had his own children, and they had theirs, and so on. Such it was for five hundred years. The original purpose of the ring had long been forgotten, but it was still a family heirloom, passing from father to son. As the deWinter males were never obligated to keep the name, it was give up by one Anthon, who traded the last name for Rhys. Rhys’ line continued producing, the ring always following the first son. Yet something else happened as the generations continued to pass by; the Force was lost to them. No longer producing Force Users, the Rhys line would have been considered weak and worthy of annihilation if the other deWinters knew of its existence. However, with Shery deWinter gone, no one else picked up the mantle of family book keeping.

Antoine Rhys is currently the last of his line. He does not know, nor does he care, what happened to other branches of the Rhys family. He was given the Amddiffyniad by his father when he turned 13. At first, he kept the ring for effect. Such a ring looked grand on the hand of the thirteen year old. Wearing it became a habit with time, and he rarely removes it these days.

Perhaps, now that Antoine has decided to join the political life and join the Confederacy, he might discover what the ring actually does and how it keeps a part of him safe. Then again, he might not.
