The 30 Year Old Apprentice

Diana stood in the training room already stretched and ready to go. Instead of her usual Jedi Robes she wore what could only be described as bandages and a tight pair of bodysuit leggings. The reason for this was quite simple, this outfit provided for the greatest mobility one could ask for. The clothing of course was not very revealing, the bandages covered everything and if anything made her seem less...gifted in the chest area.

The clothing did however reveal her multitude of scar's, cuts, scrapes, bruises, and burns. Her entire body was speckled with them like a cheetah. It was a disturbing sight to someone who had never seen battle wounds before, although she figured that her knew apprentice likely wouldn't care much.

Diana smiled slightly as the thought came to her. Apprentice, she never would have thought of taking one a few months ago, and now she had two. She chuckled to herself slightly at the thought of Avalore.

Her wayward pregnant ward. Eventually she would have to introduce her to Preacher, that meeting would be quite amusing. For now though she would keep them separate, mostly because their training would be entirely different. Avalore was learning more about the force as a whole, and Diana planned to start Preacher out on combat as soon as possible.

From his discussion with Master Serath Diana had quickly gleaned that he intended to be a Soldier for the Jedi, and she was wholly prepared to help him full fill that roll.

Having woken early as he typically did, the freshly minted Padawan had wrapped himself in the robes that had been deposited outside his door the night before. Someone had tried to enter the room, but he'd woken with such a start that they'd thought it best not to come in.

Probably a good idea.

Shrugging his shoulders to get a feel for the weight of the cloth, he left the robe hanging open down his chest so that it simply hung from his shoulders and exposed the front of his deep maroon beskar.

But, he'd already beaten her into the training room. Stealth was his field of mastery, and the man had, in the past, had people stare directly at him and not see him. He still didn't understand how that had happened.

"You ready?" He asks from his corner, training saber held loosely in his hand.

Diana was startled slightly when Sarge seemed to suddenly appear out of no where, but she quickly turned to him with a relaxed look. The Jedi Knight wasn't exactly worried about being attacked here, nor was she worried about getting hurt.

She left her own sabers on the floor across the room. Neither one were adjustable to training power levels, they were killing weapons not toys. From the rack she picked up a long saber-staff, a weapon that she was not overly familiar with but wanted to get more practice with, this would be a good started. She spun the long hilt a few times and then ignited the two blades, emerald green in nature. She looked at them for a split second, and then shut off one of them.

“We will start at the beginning.” Diana as she walked over to him with light footsteps, the training saber still ignited on one side. “Lightsaber's are not swords, they are not blasters, and they are most definitely not toys.”

She said this mostly because of how light the weapon was. “There was seven forms of lightsaber combat, each with different styles. The Jedi prefer to use the forms that rely more on defense and ending a fight fast. We seek most often to end a fight quickly and without death.”

Diana took almost the next hour to explain all the different forms and the different stances one took in them. They were all careful practiced maneuvers with the Saber-staff used as a single lightsaber. She tried to be as instructive as possible, with Preacher nodding along and clearly already knowing some of the basics of sword work. After she had explained nearly every detail in lightsaber combat Diana finally shut up for a few moments.

“I myself prefer the use of Two Lightsabers, it is an aggressive style but one that finishes combat quickly. In the past I have also favored a single blade, though that is beyond me now.” Diana smiled at the memory of her destroyed sword Tyrfing.

Smirking a little at the faint start in the much younger woman, Sarge gave faint nods of her head as she started to talk. Double bladed sabers were fairly popular, although he personally couldn't see using one.

Only weapon similar that he'd ever used was a quarterstaff. Personally, though, he didn't care that there were forms of saber combat. He was going to do what he thought would work - trying to stick to any one form was often something he found uncomfortable.

"I will likely gravitate towards two blades eventually, but for now I will stick with one - it leaves my other hand open for the use of Force abilities."

A simple enough set up, really, and a common one among the Jedi Guardians if he remembered correctly.

"So, should we spar? Or is there more instruction?"

“No. I believe you caught the gist of it. The more complex things can be gone over later.” With a simple twist of her wrist Diana flung the lost saber-staff handle forward, spinning the single blade and gripping it loosely in her hand. The Long hilt felt weighty in her hand, and she was not sure if she liked using it at all, then again the second blade would be of much advantage in a fight, though she didn't plan on activating that just yet.

She positioned herself across from Preacher, taking on an aggressive stance. “Part of lightsaber combat is the force.”

Diana spoke slowly as she took a step forward, and then lunged. She sliced with the training saber towards Sarge's torso, aiming to strike his ribs.

“You must surrender yourself to its guidance, its flow and form.” Diana moved with incredibly speed, her strike like a viper.

Even as she spoke, he readied himself. She had the Force, but he had his own reflexes. He didn't even know what the Force felt like - but he knew he'd fought and defeated more than his fair share of Force Users in his time.

He prayed that his own combat prowess would carry him through this, even though he was unfamiliar with the lack of weight for the blade. It was a mental process to always remember where the blade was pointing simply by how he held the hilt in his hand... but it would have to do.

"Don't know anything about that...", he exhales, moving at nearly the same time she did, rotating his torso to be parallel to her blade - even as he ignited his own and sliced downward to catch hers, right foot sweeping up and out to, hopefully, catch her in the back of the knee.

Yeah, for now his own enhanced reflexes and speed brought about both by Vong tampering and his own experiences, would help him keep up with her. But he still didn't know what the Force was like.

Diana moved her foot backwards swiftly, not stepping but instead allowing her barefoot to slide backwards. This allowed her to reposition herself somewhat to the side of Preacher and with a heavy hand drive a fist towards the side of his ribcage, exactly where there would be a gap within his armor. Diana had fought enough Mandalorians to know that much by now.

“Feel it. Easy into it. The Force flows through you even now.” It was the easiest way to get Preacher to connect to the force. Meditation was important of course, but during combat Diana had always felt closest to the force. It guided her, moved her, like an invisible hand. She hoped that it would be the same for Preacher.

For some reason, he could practically see her moving back already... and then she was moving forward, seemingly at the same time. Conflicting directives paused him, but as he rotated his torso faintly to take into account the strange sensation, he felt her fist impact his upper arm.

Without truly thinking, he heaved his training saber back the other direction - except instead of trying to use the blade, he was all but going to bash the hilt into her face... even as his arm started to feel a little tingly and ache.

Diana leaned back and allowed the back of Preacher's lightsaber hilt to drive over her. She continued with her backwards bend and flipped herself over in an almost artistic move, she flipped around backwards and onto her hands, then she took a single bound back and landed two meters away from where Preacher stood. She landed in a smile, her lightsaber still activated on one side only.

“Good.” She said with a smile, and then took up a defensive stance.

Diana was used to being far more aggressive than this, she was used to quick strikes, flurries of movement, and harsh hits in unexpected places. This time however she went slower, Preacher still needed to learn beginners steps, a lightsaber was an...awkward weapon.

The Jedi Knight waved for Preacher to come at her.

The man watched, unperturbed, as she bounded back and away from him... and did the one thing you never did; egged him on to attack first.

Why?

He wasn't going to do it.

Snorting a bit, he set the saber into a guard position and simply shook his head. "I do not attack first." He never delivered the first blow. Ever.

“I would hazard to guess...” Diana stopped for a few seconds to spin around her lightsaber, the long handle of the saber-staff seeming to take forever to even world around once. “That you have fought Sith before.”

Diana swung the lightsaber a few more times, attempting to get a good grip on the saber-staff. She frowned slightly as her palm slipped more towards the base of the hilt itself, towards the second emitter on the lightsabers end. She had never fought against a saber-staff herself hilariously enough, they were not so popular amongst the Sith Anymore for some strange reason. Diana had mostly fought against double or single sabers, the saber-staff was becoming more and more unique.

Part of the reason why Diana wanted to learn more about it. “My Master, counter to what most Jedi teach always told me to end a fight as quickly as possible. Usually one must be aggressive in combat to do this...Usually.”

Diana knew that that statement was not necessarily true either, her duel with Mikhail Shorn had proven it.

Suddenly and without warning Diana dashed forward, she became a near blur as she charged forward at Preacher. He blade dashed forward towards the man's legs in a large sweeping slice.

"I have - several times. That is not why I don't attack first."

Still, he couldn't help but smile. "Aggression will win it quickly, yes, but it also helps you lose quickly. Study the opponent, find what will work."

And then she launched herself forward again - but this time, he was ready. However, as was typical in fights like this, time seemed to slow. Every twitch of her muscles, every movement, seemed telegraphed.

This was normal to him, and he wasn't sure if the Force was aiding him or if it was his Vong-given reflexes. He didn't care, because he saw the angle she'd likely use to attack him, and did probably the last thing she expected him to do.

Rotating the leg she was attacking, he slid a beskar legplate into the way of the training saber, forcing him to rotate his body to accommodate the move. An elbow shot up, aiming to connect with the bottom of her chin.

He still hadn't even really used the saber yet. Kind of counterproductive, but old habits died hard.

Diana smirked slightly as preacher rotated. This was the perfect moment to utilize the dual blade design of the lightsaber she was using. In one swift swift move Diana allowed her palm to slip down the handle of the lightsaber hilt, almost dropping it in the process. Then she shut off the blade that had been activated and flipped the lightsaber around.

She positioned the back emitter directly beneath Preacher's armpit which was now open with his raised elbow, then she simply flicked the switch.

The Lightsaber ignited and shot towards the Mandalorians armpit just as Diana felt a hard solid surface impact with the bottom of her chin a solid hit that would land just as Diana's lightsaber ignited.

Literally there was zero purpose to turning the first blade off and going with the second, considering she flipped it around in her hand in the process. It was, in his estimation, an unnecessary move.

But training sabers burned. And they sent jolts of power through you, too.

Which had an unfortunate side effect beyond pissing him off.

With the sound of tearing metal, the two parasitic claws that had been embedded in his forearm tore free and clear of the beskar plating over them... so he now was barely holding onto a training saber while looking down at the Vong fighting claws he'd had as long as he could remember.

All of a sudden, his breathing was heavy, and he was fighting to control an anger that had no place in a sparring contest. Last time he'd felt like this, the woman he'd been sparring had had her face rearranged. Diana was a more experienced fighter, but he had no doubt that if push came to shove, Force or no, he'd find a way to ruin her day.

"KARK." He roars, hitting the switch on the saber to send the blade collapsing back into the hilt even as he looked around for something to hit to make himself feel better.

Something that wasn't the teenage girl.

Almost immediately Diana disengaged the training Saber and took a few step backs from Preacher. She could tell from the anger that flared from him that this was no situation to press her advantage.

Before Preacher could completely hide it she saw the blades come from his knuckles, thebriefest of glimpses. She frowned slightly, but did not comment on them. He swore in the angriest of tones, something that she was quite used to be around soldiers so often, still she could tell that the anger fell from him like water flowed off a mountain. A deep scowl was seen on her face.

“Are you alright?” Diana asked quietly, though not sheepishly.

Staring down at his forearm, he set the hilt into his belt and shook out his hand and arm. Reaching up to grab at his wrist, he flexed his palm and did his absolute best to calm down.

With slow breaths, he reached a bit of calm and the embedded parasites retracted back through the armor and into his arm. Sometimes they were embedded into the knuckles, but considering how large Vong hands were compared to his own... they'd been embedded in his forearm.

At least, that's why he figured it happened.

"Fine, Fine.", he mumbles.

Diana remained quiet for some time, she didn't try to approach Preacher or speak until she was sure he would not try to harm her. It was better to assess a thread before walking in blind. When she was finally sure he had calmed down enough she slowly made her way to him, her lightsaber still off obviously and her footsteps very careful.

When she reached him she did not touch him, nor did she move to. Instead she spoke in a warm voice, almost soothing.

“I assume, that those things are from your grayed out past.” She moved to stand in front of him, though not in a confrontational manner “I'm guessing you can't always control when they...poke out.”

Those were two very large assumptions, but they were safe bets from what she had seen.

"They're definitely from my past." The man grumbles, fiddling with the forearm guard set atop his body suit. "And not really. They're mostly tied in with anger or a fight or flight response. You can imagine which it chooses."

After several long moments of staring at his arm and shaking it out, he lifted his head to peer at the shorter woman from behind his T-visor.

“I suppose its a good thing you came to the Jedi then” Diana mused for a few seconds. “Part of learning to control the force is concentration, calm, peace of mind. Its all about Control, control of yourself, control of your mind, and control of your body.”

She didn't say control of the force for one simple reason, one did not control the force. One had to surrender to it to truly utilize it. Of course you could only do so after achieving control of yourself. If one didn't receive this control over oneself...well then they had a greater chance of using emotion to control the force, and the use of emotion...was the way of the Sith.

"I am, generally, in control of myself. I am typically viewed as far from calm; a volatile sort, if you will." A slow exhale could be heard, although it was muffled. His body was controlled though, other than that one nagging stupid thing in his arm. But if there was one thing he was in utter control of.

It was his mind.

No matter how angry he got, his mind was still his. He could still think rationally. He'd learned to do that at a young age, and while his aggression often appeared blind, it was anything but.
