OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To provide a commonly used, modular pack to be used by soldiers and adventurers
  • Canon Link: N/A

  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Modular: The Tauntaun allows military commanders and logistics personnel to easily and quickly provide specialist equipment for military personnel in an easily transported package. Each frame can take two modules as detailed below.
  • Impressively Cheap: The Tauntaun uses fairly common materials, making it budget friendly for even the poorest forces, and making it ideal to give out as military aid.
  • Microcel Power Supply: The Tauntaun's frame includes a microcel in it, allowing it to supply additional power to the modules (if needed) or to supply a little extra power to recharge personal items, such as comlinks or blasters.
  • Lightweight: Aside from the durasteel frame, most of the pack is fairly lightweight, enabling users to comfortably and relatively quickly travel long distances with it on their back.
STRENGTHS
  • Modular: Tauntaun can be outfitted for a wide variety of uses and environments thanks to its modular nature.
WEAKNESSES
  • Damage Prone: While using light and common materials also comes with the downside that this equipment isn't very durable on the battlefield, at least long-term. It's value as any sort of armor is negligible. Any direct fire to the backpack is likely to damage it or its modules.
DESCRIPTION
Troops in armies and personnel in many other outdoor-oriented organizations are often expected to be able to carry a lot of equipment by foot. Field packs provide a good solution for carrying general supplies around like rations, power packs, and and other small personal items. But sometimes items are large, awkwardly shaped, or otherwise don't fit well into traditional backpacks. Combined with the issue of many personnel accidentally losing items strapped to the exterior of some of these backpacks, Lucerne Personal Defense looked into the use of modular backpacks, with an eye towards developing containers that would stand up well to the rigors of outdoor life (though not necessarily the battlefield). This led to the choice of solid, agrinium container modules that were relatively lightweight but not easily damaged in normal, everyday outdoor use. To fit these modules, the company developed an external frame backpack made out of easily repaired durasteel. This frame can hold up to two of the following modules:

Cargo: These are hollow roughly regular containers of agrinium used to store a variety of small items just like conventional backpacks.

Environmental Adaptor: These modules contain equipment to help the user work in certain environments. For hot areas, this module includes a Coolth radiator, much like a Coolth backpack to make the environment significantly more bearable, along with a water reservoir, much like the SD-48 Survival backpack. For more frigid areas, this holds a heating unit with a small power supply and a thinhut.

Long-Range Comlink: This module holds an OmniNode Communications Set, providing the user with the ability to conduct multiple long-range calls, useful for military and scouting expeditions. It is commonly paired with the power generator module below to boost signal strength, allowing it greater broadcasting range and an improved ability to punch through communication's jamming.

Portable Power Generator: This module contains one of the smaller Bia series Portable Fusion Generator . Often used to provide additional power for communications and sensor devices, as well as crew-served weapons and droids.

General Purpose Scanner: This module contains an EnhanceScan General-purpose scanner, useful for scouts, guerillas, and military forces for recon and perimeter security.

Life Support: This pressurized container holds the necessary gases or atmosphere needed for an organic to survive in a hostile atmosphere for approximately one day. It typically has tubing that allows it to be connected to battle armor, breath masks, and like devices.

Survival Kit: This module contains a Pretormin Environmental's popular Crash Survival Kit, providing users with many common items needed to temporarily survive in the wilderness.

Lucerne Personal Defense has mainly sold TaunTaun Modular Packs are mainly sold to planetary defense forces, outdoor enthusiasts, and scouts. Many pilots and spacers also keep a pack onboard their vessels as the basis of a survival kit if their starships crash. A large number are frequently found in use by guerillas and other irregular forces trained by and supplied by Directorate Trade Agents.
