Private Survival of the Fittest

Currently a 1x1 thread but feel free to message us if you want an entrance. For instance, we may open this up to a rival party as we develop the thread.

His fingernail pinged on the glass sitting on the tabletop. Rum was within it but he didn’t need a drink. Gaze glued to the viewscreen, datapad kicking back data of this and that, sat in his outfit. The cantina was alive with loud music and a crowd but none of it distracted him. Bartender behind the counter dancing between customers, other customers dancing with each other on the floor, somebody coming in from the door. Sag’etare Baracco didn’t look up though. He focused on his pad and finally sipped his drink with an “Ahh!”

“Think we’re gonna need something lean and mean to reach our prey.” Releasing his hand from the glass, trading finger to tap on the pad. “Like that?” He asked the man opposite where he sat.

The Proa-class X12 had room for a crew of two. It wasn’t too fancy but its turrets would certainly come in handy. Swiping aside on the screen showed the ship at port just north of this space station’s cantina. “The Courtier. Deep in storage. Seems like a pretty sweet quarry, especially if we have any trouble.”

For this story, they needed a ship to intercept a shuttle, the Dry Chalice, and retrieve its data before it reached the planet Anchoron in the Outer Rim. “I can fly it.” At that, the pirate sat back and searched his companion’s face with a certain grin. “You can fire from it.” Pilot. Gunner. Two-man crew. Granted, Jacero Savi was just another number to Sage. That was just the name of the game.

The cantina was blaring, sentients of all kinds moving between tables and spilling onto the dance floor, and Jace was loving it. He grinned as he watched the crowd, one foot tapping along beneath the table while he resisted the urge to abandon business entirely and join some of the prettier girls enjoying themselves. Instead, he looked back to the local beer in front of him, lifted the glass and took another mouthful.

When the Zabrak opposite spoke up, Jace swivelled on his seat and leaned in to scan the datapad.

"Got something?" His bright green eyes moved over the details before his eyebrows rose. "Oh, X-Twelve? Nice."

Small, sleek and a little older, but that didn't bother him much. Speed was the important part. If the job went the way they wanted, nobody would even have the chance to catch up to them. If it didn't, being able to make distance quickly mattered considerably more than having something pretty.

Jace took another drink and nodded.

"Yeah, I think that'd do well." A smirk pulled at his mouth as he looked over the specifications again. "I've never had the chance to shoot weapons on a ship before. That could be fun."

He sat upright and lifted his glass, leaving a wet ring behind on the tabletop. The local beer wasn't half bad. Nothing like what he usually drank on Denon, but good enough that he took another mouthful before setting it back down and looking across at his contractor.

"So, boss man, we ready to go collect our new ride?"

Jace grinned, already thinking through the storage site rather than the cantina around them.

"Deep storage shouldn't be too hard to get into. Places like that usually run pretty standard security sweeps." He tapped one finger lightly against the table. "If we time it right, and the place is big enough, we should be able to get in, find the ship and be gone before anyone realises something moved."

That was the ideal, anyway.

Jace reached for his drink again, still smiling.

How much of the plan survived first contact with the storage facility remained to be seen.

Sage cocked a brow at Jace’s words. That this Kage had apparently never had the chance to shoot weapons on a ship before might not make him the best candidate for the turret in hindsight. Then again, there was a first time for every lesson, and the Zabrak had it in mind to give his companion one. He would learn it and graduate one way or the other. Or become one other number.

Companions. Partners. Friends? Hardly. Jace knew as much about Sage as the other way around. I know this taste though. He licked spiced rum from his lips. It was not half bad. Boss man. Was he that? Perhaps. The Zabrak had the information and the contacts, for a start, and was likely going to be the captain of the ship as much as its pilot. Still, they were partners in this shindig if not friends. Unless and until one of us gets killed.

“Should be big enough indeed,” Sage agreed. “Space station like this puts a bit of emphasis on its docks.” Carda 9 was this place’s name, in the Outer Rim. The station was a bit out of the way but near enough to a hyperlane. “Guards at the storage entrance.” He tapped his pad for his partner again. “Assholes at a toll booth in truth. Can stroll past those dudes and—”

He hesitated, waited for a passerby to pass behind. “—Head in or take this back entrance.” -Tap-Tap- “Might need to crack some heads if we run into trouble though.” He cracked his knuckles. “Hope you’re okay with that.” He didn’t really care either way or to debate. This guy wasn’t much of a warmonger but, well, he was a pirate so what the hell. However, the time on the datapad indicated they couldn’t hang around and wait much longer.

“My tab, mate.”
At that, Sage rolled a credit chit across his knuckles, watched it drop on the tabletop, grabbed his pad and stood up in the crowd. Datapad slid past the flap of a jacket packed with guns and knives, one of a kind, even a sword fit for a pirate who knew to include a few grenades out of habit. Those weren’t the only items on his person though. “Let’s mosey.”
