Strategic RP 1 - Assault on Aegina City Mk2

@[member="alex_xr"] @[member="Daxton Bane"] @[member="Jorn Mair"] @[member="Equa Dominator"]
The stage was set for the battle to decide the rim world of Aegina. The locals, determined to defend their homes against Imperial invasion have called out to the Alliance to help them. The stage is set for a grand battle.

To the south the Imperial forces were arrayed on the plain before the river. In order to cross this obstacle they had decided to send a force of infantry to ford the river to the east and swing in, whilst another party crossed the river nearer the bridge to drive off the attackers.
Meanwhile, an elite force of stormtroopers was being sent to directly assault Rockport and seize it for the Empire.
The Imperial tanks and artillery were held in reserve, waiting for the bridge to be seized.

To the north the Aeginans and their Alliance supporters were determined to defend the city. Leaving only a small force to defend Rockport and a party to try and destroy the bridge, they have withdrawn most of their forces behind the defence lines at the neck to the north. It is there that they wait....

The scene is set for a titanic battle.

(A map of dispositions is attached. The blobs' size is not representative, it just indicates a unit.)
(Remember, this is a battle where you post as NPCs, making moves, not dictating the enemy's actions, but being fair and reasonable.)

(Here in spoiler text is the OOC information and orders of battle.)
Assault on Aegina City

Location: Environs of Aegina City; capital of the planet of the same name.
Participants: Galactic Empire (Attacker), Galactic Alliance (Defender)
Planetary Conditions: Aegina II is a terrestrial planet which orbits a standard main sequence star. It has a day/night cycle of 4 standard days and a rotation period of 270 standard days. Discovered during the Old Republic, the planet’s relative isolation and the various wars which embroiled the galaxy did not permit large scale colonisation or settlement. However, Aegina has grown in population over the centuries until it now numbers some ten million inhabitants, more than half of whom are concentrated within a few miles of Aegina City. The nearby town of Rockport has a sizeable population. The planet’s significance comes from the fact that the rare minerals iridium and niobium are found in relatively greater amounts in nearby mountain ranges. Those products are shipped unprocessed from Aegina, though recent investors are working to create a smelter and refinery on the planet. The overall terrain of Aegina is flat mixed with areas of high plateaus and ridges towards the centre of the continent. The ground is unusually alkaline, making the growing of crops difficult, though not impossible. Relatively low rainfall means imported crops must be provided with desalinated water from the sea, as well as the meagre local rainfall.
Political Conditions: The planet is officially part of the Galactic Empire, but high taxes and unpopular interference has led the planet to as for aid from the Alliance. Beset with their own problems, the Alliance has been able to dispatch a small force to assist the locals in defending their city from the Empire. The Imperials too have only managed to send a relatively small force, as Aegina is not a huge priority on their list of targets, but the quality of this strike force is superior to that of their enemies.
Battlefield Description: Aegina City sits on a relatively small peninsula which sticks out north into the sea. The Aeginans have fortified the narrow neck protruding from the mainland, and have put guard posts around the peninsula. To the south the main road runs along a causeway above the plain and crosses a river three miles south of the neck at a large bridge. The river itself is not impassable to infantry, but is to wheeled vehicles seeking to cross.
Weather Conditions: Weather in this part of Aegina is usually cloudless apart from the summer months where almost all the region’s rainfall occurs. It is currently spring, temperatures are around 65 Fahrenheit in the middle of the day, dropping to 45 or lower at night. High winds are common, blowing from the south.

Note on Quality: The quality ratings above are guides to the unit’s ability and equipment. The scale runs from A (best) to F (worst). C is the middle average. Trained, professional forces fall into this class, while veteran and elite units are rated as B and A respectively. Units which are of limited experience and equipment are rated as D while militia and raw support troops receive E and F.
Battle Objectives: The Imperial goal is to smash through the Alliance defences quickly and take Aegina City. Doing this will effectively end organised resistance and allow mopping up to be conducted. The Town of Rockport should also be an objective as it contains a space port. The Alliance and Aeginan goal is to defend the city and inflict enough casualties to force the Imperials back. If this is done further reinforcements can arrive, and the Imperials will be forced to retreat, conceding Aegina’s independence.

Aegina Strike Force Artillery Regiment (Command Bunker)

Colonel Hanzer Olkza acknowledge his orders and then got on the secure band to his units. "Attention all units, Attention all units. Proceed due west 2 clicks and deploy. Platoons Alpha, Bravo and Charlie, you have a fire mission on coordinates 11.15, smoke rounds, x pattern, cross face grid pattern. The commander wants that bridge covered in smoke so thick they wouldn't be able to target our armor. The rest of the platoons, target coordinates 04.11. Target is the enemy city of Rockport. Alternating rounds of HE, Incinderary, and Napalm for one hour, then switch to HE rounds and then switch again. Command wants any defenders in that city reduced into smudges on the landscape. We don't stop firing until we get the signal that our men are closing in on Rockport, understood?" Sitting back he watched as his men carried out their orders.

Aegina Strike Force Stormtrooper Battalion

Major Stulz Kaiser glanced at his chronoband as his men used the woods to cover their approach to Rockport. The bombardment had been going on for a couple of hours now and fires were blossoming all over the space port. "Signal Arty command, we are in position. Tell them to switch to smoke rounds so that we can start our approach."

While his comm officer relayed the information, the Major turned to his men and said. "Remember our job is to secure Rockport and neutralize any enemy opposition. If we are able to capture their armor or arty, we can use them to support the offensive is that understood. We are the Storm!" The woods resounded with the hurrahs of the assembled veteran troopers.

Aegina Strike Force Tie Interceptor Command

Colonel Ahment "Raven" Yabat pointed to the holodisplay as he continued his briefing. "We are on full combat alert as operations have begun planetside. Your interceptors are free to engage in any aircraft near and above target zones. Our mission is to establish air superiority. As we have trained work in teams of three. Cover your flanks and your rear and watch your wingmen. Remember that there are no medals for dead pilots. We launch as soon as enemy air assets are spotted. Intelligence warns that there may be possible anti air assets present near the capitol, so we are to avoid that area until the ground forces clear it up. Understood? Godspeed."

Aegina Strike Force 1st Assault Regiment

By the time they emerge from the hills they were covered in thin layer of dust. Not that little dirt would ever stop these men and women. They had forded the river due east of the target and now were linking up to the 2nd Assault Regiment's position. "Reaper Seven in position." Their specialization was lightning fast assaults, and this bridge and its defenders presented an ideal target. "Ready when you are."

Aegina Strike Force 2nd Assault Regiment

Emerging from the river several clicks due west from the bridge, stealthly killed the Republic patrol using knives, as the rest of the team followed on to dry land. Taking out a pair of macrobinoculars, the lead scout studied the bridge which was now cloaked in a thick blanket of smoke. "Emerald Green now in position." Once they were all out of the water, they would link up with 1st assault regiment and hit the bridge defenders from the rear as the armored column approached from the front.

1st Line Regiment:
High Colonel Axry Dawn was given his orders that as soon as the 1st and 2nd strike forces gave the signal that the bridge was taken over to move into postion at the bridge. and to not give up that ground untill there was no more ammo to be shot and to do everything nessary to hold that postion.

2nd Line Regiment:
Major Dreen Manex was rallying his troops by saying "We the Imperal forces are given a task to take the captol. and we are given a task to take over the town of Rockport we are to give the batilon suport. if anymoa wants to leave now its too late."

Armoured Regiment:
Armor Sargent Jex Dom had spen some time looking over the battle stragety and was told to keep his tanks back untill the bridge was taken over. and hold a postion there till the nessary time. he wanted to be in the action and send his tanks over the bridge and stright to the capitol and shell them till all the people were bits and pieces, but he decied to follow orders and sent a mesage through his link to the second in comand to turn the engines on and be ready to move.

Bomber Attack wing:
Colonel Pilot Reiss Wayne was receving orders via headset to layback and wait for the code to proced the bomb bardment on the capitol. it was to take place after there was the "clear air". they were told that the fighters would keep thier arses clean of any air resitance, not wanting to waste time he had his pilots preped and ready for ignition. reviewing the map again he was looking for possabul weak points in the capitols resistance

  • 84th Air Defence Company (Captain) 182 troops/crew, 18 transports, 36 anti-air weapons. (C Quality) ALEx
  • The anti Air Defences at the wall readied their weapons, Their Captain Eldoc, He was prepared to give any aircraft encroaching against their chokepoint hell, and he would, The moment a plan was even seen the guns were to fire.

  • 1st Aegina Militia (Colonel) 500 troops, 9 light artillery. (E Quality) ALEX
  • 4th Aegina Militia (Colonel) 500 troops, 9 light artillery. (E Quality) ALEX ( merged)
  • They were ready, guarding the choke point defenses they were pleading against their own senses to stay, they had to protect this city. Colonel Stris pondered to him self the grim reality that they were just here to do as much damage as they could before they died. He didn't let his men know that though. " Now men we have a great duty here, We will hold this wall, and we will give them hell."
  • The area in front of both rock port and their defenses had anti tank mines in front of them. The funny part is that Rockport was trapped to hell, if they even took a foot in to it they would soon find out that only death awaited, It was brave of the unit to stay and hold the ruse of defenses. But the true hope was that the bridge would get destroyed.

The men who operated the Commando unit were dedicated and great at their job. They scrambled to lay explosives on the bridge, The imperials would not get to use it. They were prepared to die for this postion, that is what their job demanded of them. This battle would cost the imperials. The men went to the cruicial joints of the bridge and began placing the explosives.

1st Aegina Battalion:

Colonel Handar Swift walked around the place and checked his battalion. Everything seemed to be right, so he said: "When the Empire attacks, we can't hold back! We must not let them in!" He checked a trooper's weapon and nodded. All of them were ready to fight. Colonel Swift had never been on this type of mission before, so he had no experience.

3rd Aegina Militia:

Rockport had to be safe. Colonel Godrund Goth stood in front of his forces and waited. He had already told his militia, what they have to do, so now they only had to wait, but it wasn't so easy. They were not the best troopers, so that's why they were rated "E". A bird sang, so Colonel Goth was depressed. "Sir... Are they already coming, sir?" A trooper asked and Colonel Goth looked at him. He didn't see anything yet, so he shook his head.

Attack wing of 9 Fighters:

One of the fighters flew near the Rockport. It was already time. He was ordered to defend the city as best as he could, so he wanted to do it. The other ones were with him too, but he didn't feel like being with him. He only concentrated on his own job. He was a good soldier... Well, he actually flew with different ships and fighters.

OOC: Sorry... I didn't have time to post before and I am really sorry, if I posted incorrectly or something.

(Rolled to determine outcome of whether the bridge was blown, then on how successful the commandos were at defending their positions.)

As the Imperial troops swept forward there was a sudden explosion and a sheet of flame at the bridge! The detonators had been tripped, but unfortunately for the Alliance they had either been badly placed or had partially malfunctioned. The well built suspension bridge trembled and part of one side crashed down into the river. However, about half of the bridge was intact, meaning vehicles could pass, but only one at a time; a considerable bottleneck.

The commandos fought bravely, but despite their good position they were overwhelmed and suffered heavily as they had no support.

(I also post the attached map which has all unit's positions as I see them, air units excluded. The key will be in the spoiler below.)

Aegina Strike Force Artillery Regiment (Command Bunker)

The adjutant salutes Colonel Olkza and reported, "Sir 1st and 2nd Assault report mission success."
"Good inform all batteries to switch targets and focus all guns on coordinates 04.11. I want fifteen more minutes of high explosive rounds, then switch to smoke rounds."

Aegina Strike Force Stormtrooper Battalion

Studying Rockport for his vantage point, Major Kaiser could see the fires were breaking out all over the spaceport as the Imperial Artillery dropped more HE rounds on target. The preliminary barrage would have softened the target, causing untold deaths and injuries among the civilian population, as well as breaking their defenses. Then as the first round of smoke canisters began to land, he chambered his rifle. They were about to being their assault.

Aegina Strike Force 1st Assault Regiment / Aegina Strike Force 2nd Assault Regiment

Mopping up the last Rebel resistance, the Assault Regiments positioned themselves on either side of the bridge to secure their prize. While the injured were being tended to, the able bodied were digging trenches and firing cover, in case of Rebel counter attack. Captured rebels were sent to the rear lines for interrogation on the opposing defenses. As the transports began their slow transfer to the other side of the river.

Actions:

Arty will support the assault on Rockport, with heavy HE prep barrage followed by smoke cover.
Stormtrooper battalion will use rapid strike and deployment to take Rockport, while its defenders are shell shocked.
1st and 2nd Assault will hold, and build defensive positions as the armor, arty and vehicles cross the river.

1st Line Regiment:
after the bridge blew up on one side High Colonel Axry Dawn moved his troops to the other side of the bridge. he saw that the strike forces dug some trenches. he assined some of his men to be in them with the strike force. as he was walking across the bridge he assined 3 recruits to help with the wounded. with the bridge half blown out only one tank and maybe a few men could fit. it was going to take some time for the tanks to cross.

2nd Line Regiment:
The artys were fireing the HE round for about 15 minutes when the smoke started to pour in. Major Dreen Manex startd to yell at his men again saying "Boys, they are fireing smoke rounds. Its time for the assult!" all of his men started to gather thier weapons and other assortments. he knew thay they would be the back up if things were to go wrong. but it was better thatn having to face Nexu like the last assinment he went on.

Armoured Regiment:
The tanks started to go across the left over bridge and Armor Sargent Jex Dom made sure that there were a few tanks in the back of the trenches. he knew that if the rebels wanted thier bridge back they would come with all they have. most of thier forces were at the bridge or behind him. but it didnt matter to much. he knew that if anything went wrong they ad another alternative.

Bomber Attack wing:
So far the "clear air" comad had not come. the whole bomber wing heard the explosion at the bridge from where they were. some of the pilots went to see what had ben done but Colonel Pilot Reiss Wayne yelled almost screaming for them to come back. they need to stay together because if they were to get the call they only had minutes to lift off. Retuning to what he was doing he was looking at the reports sent to him about the weather and what they should expect in the skys.

1st Aegina Militia
Colonel Stris waited for the attack and walked to the wall. They were all pretty far at the moment, but they had to concentrate. They could attack every moment. A trooper came up and looked at the battle going on near the bridge. They were lucky, that there was the Alliance battalion near the bridge too.

Commando Company
Colonel Fang stood near the bridge and was ready to shoot. The Imperial Force had already destroyed the most of the bridge, so they now had hard times crossing it. When the first group of Imperial troopers were near enough, Colonel Fang shouted: "FIRE! FIRE!" He was very young and didn't know, what to do. Well, he knew something, but not enough.

3rd Aegina Militia
Colonel Godrund Goth was really shocked, when the battle started. He ran to the wall and ordered his troop to do the same. "FIRE!" He shouted and all of them started to shoot at the stormtrooper battalion. Colonel Goth ran down again and ordered: "Prepare the artillery!" Now the battle has really begun.

---
OOC: Soory you had to wait long. I didn't post with all battalions, because writing it was harder than I remembered. :D

(Rolled to determine the outcomes of the two battles. Nice posting guys! :))

- The remainder of the Commandos were overwhelmed by the superior enemy forces after inflicting light casualties.
- In the first attempt by the stormtroopers to take Rockport they were unexpectedly able to score a draw and repulse the first attack. Light casualties on both sides. Artillery fire inflicted some losses on the Rockport defenders.

The stormtroopers are now still outside the southern side of Rockport and can try and renew the attack if they want with artillery or air support if desired.
The bridge is now free to cross, though progress is slow. Imperials, let me know which units you want to have in the first line and how they will be attacking the Rebel defences. You will be in position to begin the attack in the turn after this.

(I have attached a map with both side's positions. Can I please ask you tell me which grid you are moving to so it's easy for me to keep up. Thanks!)

Aegina Strike Force Artillery Regiment (Command Bunker)

Colonel Hanzer Olkza frowned as he listened to the reports, it seemed that the city of Rockport was not getting hit hard enough. "Attention all units. Attention all units. Priority fire mission on coordinated 4.11. Use High explosive and Bunker Buster rounds immediately."

- Artillery will provide support cover for the assault on Rockport for one hour then blanket the town in smoke with smoke rounds.

Aegina Strike Force Stormtrooper Battalion

Ducking behind some cover, Major Kaiser got HQ on the horn and said, "This is Storm Two, we have heavy enemy resistance in section 4.11. Requesting heavy arty and bomber support to flush out these rats. Over."

"That's a negative on the bomber, Storm Two. Reports of presence of hostile anti air assets in the area. Reaper and Emerald are moving in to support. Copy."

"Copy that HQ." Tossing the radio to his comm officer, he turned to his men and said. "They are about to drop a heavy ordinance so keep your heads low and wait for the all clear. Once Reaper and Emerald arrive we strike them from two sides in a flanking assault."

- Storm troopers wait for heavy bombardment to finish, then link up with Reaper and Emerald units to flank attack Rockport.

Aegina Strike Force Tie Interceptor Command

Colonel Ahment "Raven" Yabat flexed his fingers in anxiousness. There has been no word yet on hostile air cover, so he and his men were still on operational standby in the atmosphere. He was itching to get into the fight, but unless the enemy birds showed up, there was nothing he could do but wait.

- Interceptors wait for enemy planes to enter the field before they deploy to intercept.

Aegina Strike Force 1st and 2nd Assault Regiment

"All right maggots! Seems like the Storm brigade has run into problems and need us to bail them out. Fast march, double staggered lines. We capture Rockport we can hit the Rebs from behind. Move your asses. The last man I see lagging behind gets latrine duty with the toothbrush for a month."

- Move 1st Regiment from 12.15 and 13.14 using the road and position to 05.10 and 06.10 to prepare for the assault on Rockport.
- Move 2nd Regiment from 09.14 and 10.15 using the road and position to 05.11 and 06.11 to prepare for the assault on Rockport.
- Both Regiment use staggered lines of march to minimize casualties in the event of hostile bombardment or enemy mines.
- After arty bombardment of Rockport, units will assault Rockport from three effective fronts.

1st Line Regiment:
They were attacked by the Comandos of the Republic army. Taking light castualties High Colonel Axry Dawn ordered his wonded to be put on the other side of the bridge. "We need to keep this bridge men!" He comanded his troops. Moving to the trenches if another attack would come their way. (stay wherre they are)
2nd Line Regiment:
Major Dreen Manex moved his troops along the road towards Rockport. Yelling at his men like he always does "Move, move move! We were ment to be there yesterday! Go Private! Move your you will be all the rifles we own! You hear me?!" (2nd line move to 5.11)
Armoured Regiment:
"We have about half of our Tanks across Sir." A private was reporting to Armor Sargent Jex Dom. He was glad that about half of the armor was across the bridge. they would send the first half to 11.12 to keep a postion there to slowly move foward. (move 1 armor place holder to 11.12)
Bomber Attack wing:
Colonel Pilot Reiss Wayne was suprised that they did not move his bombers into the air. If they needed support they could give it. He was given a report that there had been no sightings of air craft from the Republic. Still waiting would be the only thing he could do at the moment. (stay there)
