Star Tours' Guide to Freighters

Dunames Lopez

Megalomaniac CEO of Star Tours
Disclaimer: Credit to [member="Yusanis Myrishi"] for the first version of that guide.

It's a hell of a dark age out there, but the wheels of commerce still turn while the galaxy burns, and freighters are the spokes on those wheels. Cargoes, legal and otherwise, race from star to star, flown here and there by daring captains with credit signs big in their eyes. Naturally, the market provides those captains with dozens of options for getting from point aurek to point besh, all of them a little different. For new blood, it can be hard to figure out where to even begin looking for the right ship. That's where this guide comes into play.

What follows is a rundown of just about every modern cargo-bearing starcraft, from zippy little lighters to massive bulk freighters. This list should make it easy to sort through the vast catalog of products and find just the right model to transport you across the cosmos.

In case of disparity between the Factory and this guide for cargo or passenger capacity, the Factory value prevails in dominions, skirmishes, invasions and rebellions, and with transport of hazardous materials, but in all other circumstances you may use the value in this guide, while keeping in mind that cargo volume cannot be exceeded. Exceed the Factory ratings at your own risk!

If there's a ship I missed, or one that's restricted and should be removed from the list, or you disagree with a description, drop me a line and we'll talk. Good hauling!

Here's how each starship entry works:

Name of Manufacturer and Ship (Hyperlinked to the Factory entry)

Minimum Crew: Number of sentients required to get the ship off the ground

Optimal Crew: Number of sentients to have the ship run at full efficiency

Cargo Capacity: Amount of cargo the ship can haul, in metric tonnes

Passenger Capacity: Amount of non-crew sentients the ship can transport

Hyperdrive Rating: Multiplier for hyperspace travel time; lower is better

Sublight Rating: Speed and maneuverability in space; lower is better

Dimensions: Size of the ship, height x width x length, in meters

Vanir Technologies Varactyl-class Escort Freighter
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 8 Cargo Capacity: 1t Passenger Capacity: 3
Hyperdrive Rating: 1 Sublight Rating: 3 Dimensions: 8 x 25 x 34

Fast, lightly-armored vessel with spacious staterooms and a solarium glasteel canopy. Boasts a deadly particle gatling cannon capable of taking down much larger ships, but prone to destructive reactor spikes if power isn't properly managed.

Blith-Tech C-304 "Prius"

Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 1 Cargo Capacity: 1t Passenger Capacity: 3
Hyperdrive Rating: 4 Sublight Rating: 1 Dimensions: 1.6 x 2 x 6

A small vessel capable of being driven on a planetary surface like an ancient car. Designed for the average civilian's everyday use. Due to its miniaturization, it cannot achieve high hyperdrive speeds.

Meran Mechanics Berdick Micro-freighter

Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 1 Cargo Capacity: 5t Passenger Capacity: 0
Hyperdrive Rating: 2 Sublight Rating: 5 Dimensions: 2 x 6 x 9

Mon Calamari Shipyards Waverunner-class Modular Transport
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 3 Cargo Capacity: 10t Passenger Capacity: 40
Hyperdrive Rating: 1 Sublight Rating: 7 Dimensions: 11 x 28 x 62

No such thing as a standard Waverunner; SO many options, including a lightning-fast 0.5-rated hyperdrive. Can be outfitted with staterooms, troop transport pods, or cargo holds. Slow at sublight, and with almost no weapons, but with extremely powerful redundant shields.

Haven Shipyards AT-360 Light Freighter
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 3 Cargo Capacity: 15t Passenger Capacity: 5
Hyperdrive Rating: 1 Sublight Rating: 3 / 2 Dimensions: 27 x 25 x 44

Fragile and lightly-armed, but incredibly fast and agile, with afterburners that let it keep up with some starfighters at full burn (though it guzzles fuel). For when you absolutely must win the Boonta Eve Classic in a starship while carrying a very small cargo.

Lucerne Labs LL-1300 Shuttle

Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 3 Cargo Capacity: 20t Passenger Capacity: 16
Hyperdrive Rating: 1 Sublight Rating: 4 Dimensions: 4 x 8 x 17

Otoh Gunga Bongameken Cooperative Doodad Personal Transport
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 2 Cargo Capacity: 45t Passenger Capacity: 3
Hyperdrive Rating: 2 Sublight Rating: 3 Dimensions: 40 x 10 x 20

Zippy little ship made out of coral grown over a durasteel frame. Submersible to 500m, in case you need to go swimming but don't like getting wet. The controls are all labeled in Gungan script, making it almost impossible for non-Gungans to operate.

Silk Holdings, Inc. Tachyon-class Light Freighter
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 2 Cargo Capacity: 60t Passenger Capacity: 2
Hyperdrive Rating: 3 Sublight Rating: 4 Dimensions: 4 x 10 x 17

Arakyd Industries Templar-class Light Freighter
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 3 Cargo Capacity: 65t Passenger Capacity: 15
Hyperdrive Rating: 2 Sublight Rating: 4 Dimensions: 36 x 22 x 12

Elegant, luxurious, and well-armed, these ships blur the line between freighter and yacht. Good luck getting one, though; they were a limited production run for high-ranking members of the now-fallen Techno Union.

Moross Shipwrights Cyhraeth-class Light Freighter
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 3 Cargo Capacity: 75t Passenger Capacity: 15
Hyperdrive Rating: 1 Sublight Rating: 4 Dimensions: 15 x 20 x 45

Bug-looking ship used by the now-vanished Moross Crusade. Reasonably fast, but light on cargo space. Can be switched to dormitory configuration, with five classy staterooms instead of fifteen utilitarian bunks.

Sienar Fleet Systems Aurore-class II Freighter
Minimum Crew: 2 Optimal Crew: 8 Cargo Capacity: 75t Passenger Capacity: 200
Hyperdrive Rating: 2 Sublight Rating: 7 Dimensions: 80 x 40 x 150

Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 5 Cargo Capacity: 82.5t Passenger Capacity: 18
Hyperdrive Rating: 3 Sublight Rating: 4.5 Dimensions: 24 x 52 x 82

Slow, ugly, weaponless freighter with exposed drive housing. Cargo bay is too tall, but doubles as hangar for cargo loaders or speeders. Must've been someone's labor of love. Maybe everyone will assume you can't be carrying anything valuable with such a piece of junk and leave you alone. Only possible use: carry something weirdly tall from Planet Peace to Planet Love.

Lucerne Labs LL-1200 Light Freighter

Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 5 Cargo Capacity: 85t Passenger Capacity: 6
Hyperdrive Rating: 1 Sublight Rating: 4 Dimensions: 5 x 10 x 22

Inquisition Industries Modified YT-1300 Light Freighter
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 2 Cargo Capacity: 100t Passenger Capacity: 15
Hyperdrive Rating: 0.5 Sublight Rating: 2.5 Dimensions: 8 x 26 x 35

Among the fastest vessels out there, both in hyperspace and at sublight. Heavily armed and highly maneuverable thanks to its KV807-A engine system, which allows it to stop forward momentum and spin to match starfighters. Whisper drive makes the engines difficult to pick up. EXTREMELY expensive, and comes without shields. "Already have a stupid amount of money, and just in smuggling for the thrills? This is the ship for you."

MandalMotors AP-237 Light Freighter
Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 2 Cargo Capacity: 100t Passenger Capacity: 10

Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 4 Cargo Capacity: 150t Passenger Capacity: 6
Hyperdrive Rating: 2 Sublight Rating: 4 Dimensions: 5 x 5 x 22

Heavily armed and armored, with great cargo capacity for such a small package. The Sigma refit took away some of the heavy weapons to reduce strain on the reactor, but Corellian modularity can easily add it back. The "pocket nuke" of freighters.

Inquisition Industries Sekallien Runner

Minimum Crew: 1 Optimal Crew: 2 Cargo Capacity: 150t Passenger Capacity: 8
Hyperdrive Rating: 1 Sublight Rating: 6 Dimensions: 20 x 35 x 70

Where are you drawing the information on cargo space from? For example, the Marlin-class that I submitted (I'm Lily) exchanges the entirety of its hangar space for storage. You've listed it at 550t and then have listed another ship, a 41m long ship, as having 500t cargo.

I understand that there were a few entries where the original guide may have been a little, let's face it, flawed. Like the Marlin-class, for which the original cargo value seems randomly drawn from a hat (15,500t seems a lot closer to what it can actually carry), or the VT-Gundark, whose rated cargo capacity seems to be suspiciously low, tonnage-wise, for something capable of carrying tens of millions of cubic meters of cargo.

But most of the time, it's either the highest value referenced in IC use (Kamek, Tofolk for both passenger and cargo capacity, Pullman, Maersk, Neimoidian Yacht for passenger capacity only) or the Factory rating.
