Staff's Currently Voting On Hybrid Species Restrictions in Character Creation

I'm torn on this, as this alt is a human-miraluka hybrid (which is canon) and I RP the offsetting weaknesses as I recognize that messing with genetics in this way can be detrimental to the offspring. For example, this character does have human eyes and utilizes 'Force sight', but she can only optically see in monochrome and can only sense proximity of objects and not mass or shape.
However, I have seen people try to stuff every last bit of power breed into one person, which really makes me not want to RP with them. I understand that I have a choice to not enter threads involving such characters, but if I were to enter a public thread or invasion, there is nothing stopping them from entering and engaging me at that point.
It's a very tough issue. My preference would be to restrict to 2 species. But in the spirit of allowing for a little diversity in an RP community, I might propose an Option D: Restrict to 4 species - one for each grandparent. Anything beyond that would be ridiculous and 'inherited' special abilities would be ignored. And please use commonsense.

People are deliberately mixing and matching species to make a character with nearly no weaknesses or weaknesses that are rarely ever played or "learned" to avoid/counter. That's not being creative it's being over powered.

I vote that we make people pick a CANON species that exists in the CANON because they're CANON. The only reason I see people picking multiple species is for the benefits of those species, not necessarily creativity.

Why? The onus should be on the writers to create a character that is fair and workable. I say let the writers go nuts when it comes to creating characters with a multi-species heritage. Just don't expect anyone to want to write with your Muun/Wookie/Human/Zabrak hybrid that has all of those species strengths and none of their weaknesses.

1. The racial combinations and the way they were achieved make sense
2. When strengths are enhanced they are coupled with a proportionate increase in weaknesses
3. Characters strive for diversity of strengths or enhancement of strenghts but not both.
4. Any hybrid with genes from more then two species must incorporate an unintended genetic weakness i to thier character. One for each species beyond 2.

Personally this just annoys me from a scientific perspective. People(overall, nobody specific) have done overpowered and min-maxey things for quite a while and will continue doing so. That's just the nature of roleplaying in general. As people above have stated when I see something that's overly stupid and unrealistic in the name of powergaming I just put the person on a "Do not RP with" list. But everytime I see a profile that says something like
10% A, 15% B, 20% C, 35% D, 15% E and 5% F
It annoys the feth out of me. You cannot be bred to become percentages like that, and with genetic manipulation you're really creating a new species rather than a 'hybrid'. I don't know. I'm probably just being a stickler about such things.
Anyways,if I had to vote it'd be 3, not so much because I want to see bigger branches but because I don't want say a 1/2 Umbaran 1/2 Human char to be unable to have children.

The fact that people do this to min-max greatly annoys me because people are thus treating this place as a paper-pen RPG. You can't assign strengths and weaknesses to different races and gain them by having lineage to that species. Breeding doesn't work that way. Dog breeds have characteristics because of successive breeding; if you want to be half-spider and half-butterfly and you expect to cherry pick attributes from each, please include in your bio that your character is the result of a breeding program.

I felt this should be said... Not all hybrids, despite the necessary characters for speciation, are sterile. It actually does happen, even if the norm is for sterile hybridization. For instance, there have been cases where mare mules can breed retroactively with a horse or donkey stallion.
So if that's a sticking point, maybe someone should throw a little wd40 on it and move along. Nature finds a way.

That may be true, but it's the exception. And I hate using exceptions to justify something. It's like some rules lawyer arguing for something because page 63 of the Third Edition manual from the North African campaign special edition errata allows it.

Well, its not actually the exception. Female ligers can and have reproduced with lions. A cross between a zebra and a donkey, called a zebroid, has shown that the mares have the potential for viability. A wolphin, cross between killer whale and bottlenose dolphin, is also capable of producing offspring. Look to Ursa (bear) hybrids as well, as those quite commonly provide fertile offspring...and are actually actively doing so due to changes in climate.

Fair enough. I will concede that point and amend my stance to allow closely related species to produce viable hybrids. But I still stand by what I said about cherry picking strengths as if that's hiw genetics works.

Most Near-Human races are compatible with one another, so I can see a Vahla human, (My daughter, and son.) Or an Epixcanthix Hapan. I can also see a Epixcanthix Vahla Arkanian...but thats redonk, and what would be the purpose behind it? Arkanians already seem themselves as a superior race and probably would not mix the genes...right? So three
