Sometimes Jayna wondered what it would be like to have just one home. Though much of her time was spent on Commenor, her mother's home. But there was also Alderaan and other homesteads here and there. Now there was unrest in the Core. Commenor was occupied by the "Galactic Empire". So Jayna and her mother came to Bastion, to reclaim an old home. And Jayna was set to meet some of Mom's new friends.

The truth was that being free to move about the galaxy was exciting. Not knowing where she would lay her head each night wasn't a bad thing to Jayna. She had always felt the pull of the stars. She had plenty at the tip of her fingers if she wanted, but what she wanted most was just out of her grasp. She wasn't old enough. So she would wait for her own ship and her lightsaber and be a kid for a little bit to make her parents happy.

In the meantime their new home on Bastion was certainly livable, but it had been a while since anyone actually lived there. It lacked the things that would make it truly home, pieces of Jayna. So Mom had brought Jayna to the main marketplace on Bastion. And given her freedom to look around. It is very doubtful that Jairdain would ever think her daughter would have made her way into a book store of all places.

This, having once been home to the Sith, Jairdain was still a bit on edge. So far, she had only met Laphisto and some of his men. Walking near her youngest daughter, she was not yet showing her pregnancy, but she knew that day was coming soon. She would need some new clothes to fit her growing frame.

The two of them had to leave so much behind on Commenor and start over. Jairdain had only brought along the things she couldn't replace—items her first husband had given her. Furniture and things could be replaced. Memories could not, and she brought them to this new home.

Letting Jayna wander a little further in front of her, she took a seat at one of the cantinas.

"I'll be here waiting for you. If you find something you can't live without, let me know."

Trusting in the word given to her by Laphisto, she ordered a drink and sat thinking about everything that had brought them here.

The young "heir" of the Diarchy had been given leave from studies for the day, her father seemed to want her to have at least some resemblance of a childhood. But she was restless within her quarters, all the adults were planning for war and she wanted to be there as well. Both Shadow and her sister had been raised for this, trained since before they could walk even!

But no, it was "not yet your time, young one" or so father had said. Which was fine but left her bored. That is how she had found herself in the marketplace in downtown Ravelin. The city looked so different from when the Diarchy had first come, new parks, stores, restaurants. All to give the people more to hope for, a better quality of life. She loved it.

She was wearing her usual black uniform, so like her fathers, yet she had the hood of her cape up. She did not care to be stopped by anyone today, double bladed lightsaber hilt sitting comfortably on her hip, she never left home without it, father's rule.. she had been almost skipping as she made her way down the street, stopping in at a bookstore looking to get a gift for her parents.

It was in this bookstore she got distracted, spying a person roughly her age.

"HI!"

she called out.

Jayna wasn't quite sure what she was looking for amongst the books at this store. She doubted that they kept much in hand about Jedi training. Or Sith training. And really as much as the subject interested her, Jayna had her parents for that. It might be true that adhoc training with Mom and Dad didn't result in her rushing towards her potential, she did things on her own terms. Well everything except making her lightsaber. She still had to practice with sticks. Dad was a weapons master and he held Jayna to a high bar of readiness. Mom didn't much like saber work.

Maybe there was some book in the store that would tell Jayna what she needed besides a Kyber crystal to get things started. She was smart enough to know that there wasn't a book that would tell anyone worthy of a lightsaber how to actually construct their weapon. It was something that came to the builder during the process. But the materials should be something that was pretty universal and that could be found in a book.

But with all the learning material available in such a store, Jayna of course found her way to the drama filled fiction section. Looking over the exaggerated tales of swashbuckling smugglers, brave heroes and dastardly villains. It was then that she felt eyes upon her. At first Jayna thought it was her mom getting ready to take her back "home". But then she heard a very unfamiliar voice saying hi.

"Hey" Jayna responded with a wide smile. "This is the last place I would have expected to meet the first person my age on Bastion."

The young woman looked at the girl in front of her, a genuine smile was hard to come by in wartime. So it was returned wholeheartedly. She was happy to find someone her age, and in her favorite bookstore no less!

"I love this store, my dad brings me here all the time! What are your favorite kind of books?"

Shadow was rocking on the balls of her feet slightly, her excitement easily seen. She had spent far too much training and running through battle simulations for the war to come. Her father was not one to take slacking well, especially when it could mean death.

Her arm was still sore from blocking the last overhead strike from her dad, that was what had earned her this break.

"Actually, I don't think I've seen you before! What are you doing on Bastion?"

She said this with a smile, it was not suspicious, but genuine excitement.

Jayna tilted her head to the side a bit as the girl expressed that this was her favorite store. Jayna's parents would surely suggest that Jayna would much rather watch something on holo than read it in text. That was the feeling she wanted others to have. Let her be lazy when she wanted to be. The truth was that some things were better experienced through tangible physical contact. So while the bookstore didn't figure to be Jayna's favorite, this would not be her only visit.

"Anything old. If it involves the Force so much the better. If it is something my parents would find suspect, that's the best. I am pretty confident that they monitor my holo library," Jayna responded honestly. "I love a good smuggler or pirate story, but those are just as good in holo form. If I see something really exciting though…"

The other girl's excitement over finding a peer was both promising and disappointing to Jayna. If it was an event to see a peer, did that mean that teens were a rarity here? Only time would tell. "I just moved here from Commenor. My mom owns property here from before I was born, and I guess we really weren't looking to deal with the Sith to stay home. We kinda move around a bit anyways. Bastion will be more of a home base than a normal home, probably. I am Jayna by the way."

Shadow listened intently to the girl in front of her. Just excited to know someone her age.

“We have a lot of the old force manuscripts up at the crucible! But this bookstore has a lot of really FUN adventure stories. I spend time here when I get a break from training”

She listened to Jayna’s story. She was aware of Commenor from her father’s war briefings. He seemed to have a vendetta against the newly risen Galactic Empire.

“Commenor, now under the control of the Empire right? I was born on Taris.. but moved here with my parents, sister, and uncle. I love Bastion.”

She held out her hand

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Jayna, they call me Shadow.”

Like Shadow, Jayna was fully engaged in this interaction. Especially when there was a mention of old Force manuscripts. Jayna wasn't trained well enough to instinctively sense another's Force presence. With the talk of the manuscripts, Jayna was sure that besides age the teens also had a strong connection to the Force in common. And the Crucible definitely sounded like a place that Jayna wanted to visit. She might have to work out something with her mother to hide it from her father. He seemed to get a bit upset with any Force knowledge that was not Jedi in origin.

Jayna's lips formed into a smirk as she heard the excitement in Shadow's voice about the books that were available at this store, and she instantly forgot about anything Force training related. "What sorta stories do you think are fun? I hope you don't take this as a bad thing, because it totally isn't…but you seem a little mysterious. Do you like that kind of story?"

Hearing what Shadow knew about Commenor was a little sad. But it was true and Jayna really didn't expect to go back there. The dumb Empire was more than likely going to ruin it before they were kicked off the planet. "Yeah, stupid Sith Imperials making things bad again. Taris has a lot of history to it. I've never been. It's in Mandalorian territory now, right? Are you able to go back to visit? Maybe you can show me what's cool about Bastion."

Jayna happily reached out her own hand to shake Shadow's. She smiled as her new friend revealed her own name. "Shadow…that's cool. And I suspect that means you don't take offense to being called a bit mysterious." Jayna giggled. "So where are the really fun books kept?"

Shadow was having a lot of fun in this interaction, the closest person to her age she'd had the opportunity to be around had been her sister, and she wasn't the best company at times. However, this new girl seemed to be someone Shadow could get into some mischief with!

"I like stories with dashing smugglers and them going on exciting adventures! What about you?"

At her new friend's next question, Shadow seemed a little reluctant to answer but slowly she added

"Taris is in Mandalorian territory yeah, my father went there on a humanitarian mission but it's really gone south lately. He has been talking about war with the Mandalorians, and I know he plans to retake our home world if he gets the opportunity... but I just really remember the skyscrapers!"

Shadow took her new friend's hand when it was offered, shaking it enthusiastically.

"I don't mind at all! Although my sister is much more "Mysterious" than I am, Dad says I'm way too eager to get into a brawl" she giggled before continuing "Maybe you'll get to meet him one day, he's not as scary as everyone says"

Keeping hold of her friends hand she started to run towards the "Restricted" section of the book store

"THIS WAY COME WITH ME!"
