OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To codify more nightmarish plants native to Lao-mon.
  • Canon: N/A
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Links: "Things Fall Apart"
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Spironos (Shi'idese: "Glowpods")
  • Origins: Lao-mon
  • Other Locations: N/A
  • Classification: Fungi
  • Average Growth Cycle: Provided they do not die as a result of changing environmental factors, disease, or injury, they can live for hundreds of years undisturbed.
  • Viability: Glowpods only grow in places with very little light, such as caves. They require perpetually damp soil in order to thrive.
  • Description: Glowpods is a fitting name for this plant, as its most striking feature is the luminescent pod at its base, which is filled with a poisonous gas. The pod is surrounded by tendril-like vines, each one topped with a tubular "flower" from which it expels the gas in order to protect itself from predators.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Average Height: 0.91 meters (3 feet)
  • Average Length: N/A
  • Color: Vines are black; the pod's luminescence comes in a wide variety of colors, including red, pink, blue, green, and purple.
  • Nutritional Value: The skin of the pods consists of multiple layers, one of which is a sweet pulp which is considered a delicacy. Most sane people consider glowpods too dangerous to approach, even for the purpose of harvesting the pulp.
  • Toxicity: The glowpods release a very lethal gas, which is triggered by vibrations.
  • Other Effects: None.
  • Distinctions: Unusually, these plants are truly sexually dimorphic, with one individual plant being male and another female. The distinctions are visible to the naked eye; female plants are squatter and have a more rounded shape, whereas male plants are taller with a more ovular shape.
Strengths:
  • Poisonous: In reaction to vibrations, such as those produced by approaching footsteps, the pods start to glow in warning. If the vibrations continue, they will release a poisonous gas that is lethal within less than a minute for most humanoid species.
Weaknesses:
  • Only In Darkness: Glowpods can only survive in areas of very little or no light. Given that they start to glow prior to releasing their poison, it's fairly easy to pick one out and avoid it.
  • Growth Limited: While they can subsist for years on virtually no nutrition in the soil, the glowpods' ability to grow in size (which is necessary for reproduction; see below) is dependent on nutrient absorption. Scientists have theorized that they evolved to produce a poisonous gas in order to feed on the fallen bodies of their victims, which turn into fertilizer as they decompose. Indeed, the gas itself has been observed to speed up the process of decay.
  • Inefficient Reproduction: It is somewhat difficult for glowpods to reproduce due to their biology, which means each individual plant unit is either male or female and incapable of reproducing asexually. Since they are stationary plants, they must slowly grow and spread out over time until they are able to reach a compatible plant in order to mate. Luckily, most glowpods tend to grow in the same general area, and they don't have to worry about genetic inbreeding being an issue to their survival.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

"A Knight was forced into a corner by her attackers. Backing away, she stumbled over a scraggly plant which glowed faintly. There was a popping sound, like that of compressed air suddenly being released, and the corner the two were fighting in suddenly filled with poisonous gas. The sounds of choking and gasping echoed through the caves as both succumbed."
Billions of years of evolution on Lao-mon have led to the development of a variety of predators. But there's nothing quite like the Spironos. Known by their street name "glowpods", the fungi grow almost exclusively in cool, perpetually damp caverns, where they are able to live for hundreds of years. In response to vibrations in the earth which indicate an approaching threat, they begin to glow in warning (or in some cases, as a lure), before eventually releasing an extremely toxic gas which is lethal to most humanoid species within less than a minute. While it is possible to save someone who has been exposed to the gas within that time span using Detoxify Poison or other antidote methods, typically the attack occurs and the victim succumbs before medical assistance can be provided.
