Special Task Force 110 - "Death Mask"

OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Unit Name: Formal Name: Special Task Force 110 | Code Name “Death Mask” | Abbreviation: “STF-110”
  • Affiliation: Ignacious Korvan | The Dark Empire
  • Classification: Elite Bodyguard; Elite Black Ops/Spec Ops unit
  • Description: Special Task Force 110 is composed almost exclusively of “Death Troopers”, who all wear distinct black armor. One unique aspect to their armor is - on their left shoulder pauldron, the typical ‘Imperial’ insignia is emblazoned in both black and white, but on their right pauldron (where the extended shoulder cover is shown), a distinctive ‘mask’ is embossed in the same black color as the armor itself. This image is known as the ‘Death Mask’.

The general mindset of this unit is that of absolute loyalty to their patron; Grand Moff Korvan, as well as an almost single-minded fixation on both protecting his person, as well as successfully accomplishing any task assigned to them. Their behavior could be succinctly characterized as that of an elite commando unit that is trained and honed on a proverbial knife’s edge; ready and waiting for whatever situation is thrown their way.
COMBAT INFORMATION:
  • Unit Size: Small
  • Unit Availability: Rare - Organized into (8) squads of twelve soldiers each at any given time, for a total force strength of precisely 96 operators.
  • Unit Experience: Elite
  • Equipment:
  • Combat Function: Under normal circumstances, STF-110 functions as a bodyguard unit for Ignacious Korvan himself - with no less than one full squad escorting him as a security detail (although other units will either be forward deployed to aid in preemptive crowd control, or in securing their asset’s end destination).

Unofficially, units within this force are occasionally deployed on ‘special assignments’ under the utmost of secrecy, and of the highest personal importance to their patron. Such missions are highly classified, so much so that they elude all but the highest levels of scrutiny amongst the Empire’s intelligence organizations - that is to say, if any of their operations are discovered or are otherwise known of. Usually, their missions ‘never happened’, and rarely ever are known by anyone other than Korvan and those on a ‘need to know’ basis.

Their combat doctrine is a combination of traditional special forces, counter-insurgency, black ops, and guerilla warfare tactics wrapped up within a unique brand of efficiency that makes all but the most capable of special operators green with envy (whether they like to admit it or not). It would be exceedingly rare to see units of the “Death Mask” deployed on the front lines, but they would not hesitate to do so if the need arose in protecting their asset. In short, seeing members of the “Death Mask” is both rare and can be excessively unsettling given their rapidly increasing reputation, but encouraging at the same time for soldiers benefitting from their skills and experience. Public knowledge and perception is that these soldiers are elite commandos and bodyguards, and with that they carry the same level of respect and uncertainty any other elite outfit would - save for whatever secondary impact Korvan’s reputation would have upon them.

The minimum rank for members of this outfit is that of sergeant, with the commanding officer of this task force being of the rank of Lt. Colonel. This rank structure was implemented by Ignacious Korvan himself, and is meant to facilitate the specialized nature of this outfit; providing it with a self-contained and highly experienced staff that operates outside of the traditional chain of command. All units of STF-110 report directly to Ignacious Korvan himself.
  • Force Abilities (Force User Units Only): N/A
Strengths:
  • Elite Commandos: The men and women within Special Task Force 110 are easily among the best the Empire has to offer, standing quite capable of going toe to toe with any other special forces outfit both within and without of the Imperial Military.
  • Top of the Line Equipment: As one would expect, given their status as both a special forces outfit and the protection detail for one of the most important men of the Empire, Special Task Force 110 has access to the Empire’s best weapons and defensive technologies.
  • Versatile: Each soldier is trained to be as versatile as possible, with all eight of the force’s units possessing operators within that are capable of filling multiple roles in a pinch, whether that means demolitions, air/voidcraft piloting, slicing, etc. Further, their training encompasses operating in some of the most exotic environments possible.
  • Loyal: Each member of the “Death Mask” is hand picked by Korvan himself, and is conditioned from the start to place their loyalty to their patron above nearly all else. If saving him meant tearing off one of their own limbs, the only question they would ask is ‘which one?’
  • Enhanced: True to the roots of the original Death Trooper program, members of Special Task Force 110 undergo a gamut of physical and mental testing and evaluations, and cap off their induction with a series of surgical and genetic enhancements that make them “somewhat beyond human”.
Weaknesses:
  • Rare: “Death Mask” is a very small force, and is really only capable of fulfilling the parameters thus outlined. Full deployment in active combat zones as front line troops is all-but expressly avoided if at all possible, lest they be completely decimated despite their highly elite status.
  • Enigmatic: While the mystery surrounding STF-110 is an advantage in many ways, it is also somewhat of a liability given the Empire’s current political climate. Thus far, Grand Moff Korvan has been able to deflect major scrutiny as to the formation of this unit under the stated intentions of increasing his own personal security in the aftermath of the attempt on his life. But this has not prevented his political enemies from attempting to find any means possible to get their hooks into his special task force, if only to undermine the man himself. This carries the additional risk of potentially opening up the task force to increased scrutiny by members of the ISB and COMPNOR, who both have a vested interest in ensuring all special operators comply with Imperial Doctrine above all else.
  • Intimidating: While the intimidation factor Special Task Force 110 provides can be a good thing in dissuading potential attackers, for a political figure such as Ignacious Korvan, it does not help his image of a man walking the fine line of an autocrat; something his political rivals have already been accusing him of in hushed tones behind closed doors. Given his current alignment as a Tarkinist, Korvan must be careful in how exactly he utilizes this task force and their intimidating profile, otherwise he may well be seen as a man trying to bring back the age of the warlords; a phenomenon the late Emperor Fel radically opposed and put an end to near the end of his reign.
  • Undivided Loyalties: While anyone would want loyal bodyguards, the undivided nature in which STF-110 is loyal to Korvan is something of a tightly guarded and kept secret by the Grand Moff. An Imperial Soldier’s first loyalty should be to the Empire, but Korvan’s “Death Mask” program is rumored to include indoctrination protocols to mandate otherwise... but that is a secret only a handful of people know of. (No metagaming please)
  • Experimentation: While not publicly stated, it could be inferred that one of the reasons the Death Trooper program was phased out in the interests of other special forces initiatives was in part due to the surgical and genetic enhancements subjects were forced to undergo. While Ignacious has spent a great deal of money and resources to revitalize and streamline the process, this new breed of Death Trooper is still somewhat experimental, with side effects still a factor to be considered. Known side effects are as follows:

While subjects acquire enhanced strength, most troopers experience heightened levels of aggression coupled with it. With enhanced stamina, comes the increased need for caloric intake; resulting in increased supply demand for troop deployment. Long term side effects weighed against theoretical improvements to the conditioning are as of yet unknown.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Special Task Unit 110 is a revitalization initiative of the Death Trooper Corps, which fell into irrelevance in favor of more focused and specialized units such as the infamous SCAR Squadron within the 501st Legion. This revitalization has occurred at the behest of Grand Moff Ignacious Korvan himself; in large part due to an attempt on his life during a commendation ceremony held within the Fortress Imperator on Bastion itself.

This reinforced within the Grand Moff the reality that, given his controversial status within the Imperial political scene as of late, he cannot ignore his own security any longer. In the wake of his military successes in the Empire’s campaign against the Chiss Rebellion within the Western Frontier, Korvan secretly set about recruiting and retraining elite soldiers who had served with distinction. Over the preceding months, this retraining and reconditioning has paid off with the formation of the first iteration of this special task force, code named “Death Mask”.

Publically, their mandate is rather straightforward - the protection of Grand Moff Ignacious Korvan. Privately, this new outfit will be the secret arm through which Ignacious will subtly enact his will, and silence those who are dead-set in standing in the way of progress - whether that means clandestine strikes in support of Imperial military interests against key members of the Galactic Alliance, or the ‘convincing’ of rather vocal members of the Moff Council who set themselves as his rivals rather than his allies.

Despite his rivals’ failure to see the Grand Moff’s aspirations are for the greater good of the Empire as a whole, Special Task Force 110 will be one of the many means through which he will guarantee his own survival in the process.

  • Updated broken image links 2/24/2024
  • Added ‘Dark Empire’ Affiliation
  • Replaced the ‘Empire’ permissions with the ‘Dark Empire’ permissions
  • Removed the Rotary Cannon and Warhead launcher.

Looks good overall, a nicely-built unit. I have just once concern, and that's the Weaknesses section. I would argue that three of your Weaknesses (Enigmatic, Intimidating, and Undivided Loyalties) are actually Strengths. They do not disadvantage the unit itself in any way. They have no effect on these troopers in combat at all. The only disadvantage they may provide is to Ignacious himself politically, and that's a pretty roundabout weakness for the actual soldiers. The rebels these guys are mowing down with their highly advanced guns can't very well fight back in that massacre by causing Ignacious trouble with the Imperial government.

Please provide at least one actionable weakness. No unit is good at everything on the battlefield.

Thank you! I revised the experimentation weakness to make it more actionable/exploitable. Please advise if this is acceptable, or if I need to revise further. Thank you!

Edited My Reply for Clarity:

Unfortunately, we can't accept a link to a Manifest as permission. The actual permission for each applicable item must be linked directly.

Do not place links in submissions to threads that are within the Archives or anywhere that cannot always be publicly viewed. (Ex. Faction Groups/Google Docs/Etc)

I missed the part about the Dark Empire being added as an affiliation, but, since I already said I would accept the listed items from NIO becoming the Empire I won't go too hard on that. In the future though please be aware that you might need to get updated perms because NIO/Empire is now defunct and any future subs will be for the DE. Perms don't transfer from faction to faction unless it was a simple re-brand like the NIO turning into the Empire. They were still the same but the DE is something new. The people who gave perms to NIO/Empire didn't give them to DE.

Apologies - I know that's a little odd.

These one's are listed as closed-market so I will need permissions for them.
Please let me know when you get these taken care of.

Thanks.

If I understand what you're saying correctly, it appears the Empire permissions are the crux of the confusion. I have replaced the Empire permissions with a blanket Dark Empire permission. I have also removed the Rotary Cannon and Warhead launcher. Please let me know if this clears up the permissions issue. :)

Yeah, I can see how it was confusing. Now to the fun part. The permission from Gat Tambor is specifically to NIO tagged tech. The ones I listed are simply closed market and are not tagged with NIO affiliation.

That is actually the crux of the issue. You need Gat to give you permission to use all his subs not just the NIO tagged subs.

Does this make sense?

(FYI: I did edit my previous post a little to add some clarity.)
