Her long, wavy, dark brown hair is generally kept neatly arranged, often in a simple low bun. She wears minimal, simple jewelry, usually favoring items made on her homeworld of Nahris from locally mined gemstones, particularly sea-green and blue-violet sapphires. She often wears a small septum ring, which reflects a coming-of-age tradition in her community. Her clothing favors clean tailoring and rich maritime colours, with sufficient ease of movement for shipboard visits. She dresses with the care expected of a senator without concealing her enjoyment of fine clothes and jewellery.

Personality & Beliefs

Soriel is outwardly warm, sociable, and well mannered. She is comfortable with the advantages of her upbringing and conscious of the protections and privileges that came with it. She enjoys intelligent, witt company and beautiful things, while taking the practical obligations of public office seriously. Her student leadership taught her to prepare thoroughly, understand budgets and find enough common ground to bring people with competing interests into the same negotiation. She dislikes needing to raise her voice or otherwise make a meeting uncomfortable, so she tries to avoid it.

Her opposition to tyranny grew from direct experience of arbitrary detention and the unequal treatment of people without influential families. She believes that emergency powers required firm limits, that public officials should answer for their decisions, and that distant shipboard communities deserve meaningful representation. She is willing to negotiate imperfect settlements when lives depended on them, although she could find it difficult to accept the people such agreements left beyond accountability. Her discreet support for the Rebel Alliance extended those convictions into work that could endanger her career, her family and employees who knew nothing of it.

Strengths

  • Compromise: Skilled at finding shared interests disparate groups to find a workable solution.
  • Preparation: Carefully reads budgets, accounts, and legislative detail to be sure she has as full a picture as possible.
  • Logistician: As a result of her family business in trade, she has a grasp of logistical challenges and creative solutions.
  • Resourceful: Personal and family wealth and trusted social and business relationships give her options.

Weaknesses

  • Tangled Loyalties: Her family's trading interests and her own political maneuvering have created conflicts of interest and opportunities for political pressure.
  • Uneven Competence: Her political skill seems to exceed her years, but she has little established experience in combat, infiltration, or other more practical endeavors.
  • Privilege Blindness: She can sometimes lose sight of the fact that others fighting in common cause enjoy fewer protections than she does.
  • Exposure: Rebel assistance relies on shadowy networks that could be investigated, obstructed, or betrayed.

History

Soriel Daryaei was born into a wealthy Nahrisi import/export trading family. The Daryaei family's interests linked underwater mining operations, migrating city-ships, and offworld markets. The Daryaeis exported precious metals and Nahrisi gemstones, imported foodstuffs and textiles, and financed cargoes. Soriel grew up splitting her time between the permanent planetary capital harbor, her home city-ship, and her family's vessels, where she learned how closely the welfare of an isolated community depends on fuel prices, freight schedules and access to repairs.

Her political career began at university, where she became a student representative, then president of the student union. At nineteen, she helped organize opposition to a harbor authority's abuse of emergency security powers. Measures introduced after a severe storm season had remained in force long after normal traffic resumed, restricting travel, suppressing labour demonstrations, and allowing critics to be detained without promptly facing charges. Students joined the campaign after volunteers assisting dockworkers' families were arrested in a brutal crackdown. Her pro-labor agitation often puts her at odds with some family members whose approach to capitalism is slightly more... draconian.

During these demonstrations, Soriel was detained alongside other organizers, but her family secured her release within two days; several companions remained imprisoned for weeks, and one suffered permanent injuries during interrogation. In response, she helped assemble a coalition of workers, lawyers, and trading houses, using family resources to fund legal representation while coordinating witnesses and examining the authorities' accounts. The campaign secured the prisoners' release, the removal of the director and tighter limits on detention powers. Its negotiated settlement also left records sealed and several responsible officers beyond prosecution, a compromise that cost her the confidence of some fellow organizers.

This experience gave her the politics bug, and at twenty-one, she campaigned for and won a seat in Nahris's planetary assembly. Her work concerned maritime transport, public infrastructure and the rights of communities dependent on remote harbor administrations. She challenged exemptions benefiting politically connected companies, including businesses associated with her own family. She built a reputation for tenacious campaigning and lively performances in the Assembly and political media on Nahris, a reputation that she parlayed into a campaign for the planet's seat in the High Republic Senate, earlier this year, bolstered by support from commercial interests, reformers, and representatives of the travelling settlements.

Recently, a friend from her school days approached her to request assistance arranging safe travel for a family that was 'having a rough time.' Soriel was happy to assist, but then the requests kept coming: for clearance of a blocked medical supply delivery, or waiver of transport duties on a shipment of construction equipment, or more safe passage. After confronting the friend, they confessed to participating in a broad underground resistance movement dedicated to resisting tyranny across the galaxy. Now, Soriel must consider the correct course of action between what she knows is morally correct, and the danger doing the right thing carries of exposing herself, her family, Nahris, and the Republic.
