Behind that business is Sord Montok's more profitable trade. The company maintains discreet arrangements with brokers, criminal organizations, mining concerns, and private buyers to transport sentient beings under the guise of labor contracts, prisoner transfers, or private chartered cargo.
Sord Montok does not generally acquire slaves itself; instead, it provides the ships, routes, documentation, and connections necessary to move them between suppliers and buyers. This separation allows the company to maintain plausible deniability while its legitimate shipping network provides an effective cover for the slave trade.
Lady
RATIONALE
Sord Montok Transport was an established shipping company when Lady Mand Oricen first became involved with it. She initially acquired an interest through private investment and commercial contracts, using her connections within the Golden Order to bring the company new clients and sources of capital. In doing so, Mand discovered that much of Sord Montok's exceptional profitability came from its involvement in the transportation of slaves.
Rather than expose or dismantle the company, Mand gradually bought out its existing owners and consolidated control over its operations. The previous ownership was compensated and removed from the company's affairs, leaving Mand with control of both its legitimate shipping network and its illicit contacts. Since taking control, she has expanded Sord Montok's legitimate operations while preserving the criminal enterprise beneath them, ensuring that the company remains useful and profitable whether its clients are looking for ordinary freight or something considerably less legal.
