SPECIAL FEATURES
  • High Power Weapon: While it borrows technology from its much smaller cousin sonic weapons, the Sonus is roughly equivalent to a turbolaser in terms of size and power. It is almost always a stand alone emplacement or vehicle-mounted weapon.
  • Variable Fire Modes: The sonic projector in the Sonus can have its output frequency altered, allowing the Sonus to produce a variety of sound outputs, from typical compressed sonic bolts like the classic LR1K to area of affect sonic stun waves like a sonic stunner to tightly compressed and highly energized sonic bolts similar to those of sonic disruptor.
STRENGTHS
  • Heavy Hitter (Sonic Disruptor Mode): The Sonus focuses a lot of power into each bolt in the disruptor mode, straining the capacity of the capacitors in this mode. Such concentrated power is highly destructive, with bolts frequently disintegrating light vehicles or taking out large chunks of heavily armored vehicles.
  • High Rate of Fire (Wave Stunner Mode): In wave stunner mode, Sonus almost continuously fires, sending out wave as fast as its capacitors can gather up energy.
  • Environmentally Effective (Water): Whereas many blaster and particle beam weapons are less effective in water, sonic weapons like the Sonus's effects are amplified in a liquid medium.
WEAKNESSES
  • Low Rate of Fire (Sonic Disruptor Mode): The capacitors need to charge a fair amount to build up enough power for that destructive bolt, making it a slow-firing weapon.
  • Weak Damage Output (Wave Stunner Mode): The high rate of fire in wave stunner mode means that capacitors almost immediately discharge their power before they can even get it, meaning that the individual sound waves produced in this mode are quite weak on their own.
  • Ineffective (Space): Sound waves do not travel well in the vacuum of space, making it entirely ineffective in that environment.
DESCRIPTION
Looking to better ensure the defense of its underwater facilities, Lucerne Labs decided to produce a sonic cannon which could better protect these assets than traditional energy cannons. To that end, the company effectively took the classic LR1K Sonic Cannon and fused it with the technology of its subsidiary's Furor Sonic Pistol. Consequently, while the Sonus typically acts as a turbolaser equivalent, hurling sonic bolts that dangerous to enemies like large creatures and heavy vehicles, the Sonus has a bit more utility in it. In its sonic wave stunner mode, the cannon rapidly discharges a cone of soundwaves which ideally quickly debilitate a cluster of organic's ability to think or act but which typically tend to not be lethal with only brief exposure. Conversely, the Sonus can build up a significant charge in its capacitors to launch a very concentrated bolt of sonic energy which frequently disintegrates its targets outright. While unusually effective in the water because of how sound propogates through that medium, it is significantly less effective in less dense mediums, noticeably the vacuum found in outer space and on some orbital bodies, which limits the Sonus's use. However, for Lucerne Labs's original intended purpose for the weapon, these are tradeoffs that the company is willing to make.
