As the last traces of dinner faded into memory and twilight deepened, Braze coaxed the campfire into fuller life. Sparks leapt skyward as he laid fresh logs across the embers, the crackle of splitting bark joining the chorus of Ossus's night-creatures. Smoke curled upward, drifting on the evening breeze, already weaving its scent into the fibers of his tunic.

A half-circle of chairs stood ready around the fire, empty for now save his own. He sat with a length of wood balanced across his knees, knife working in steady strokes that peeled away thin curls. Bit by bit, the shape of a crude gaderffii began to emerge, the stubborn branch giving itself over to his vision.

The glow of the fire painted his face in shifting golds and ambers, reflections dancing in pale green eyes that seemed almost spellbound. Around him, the night pressed close...rustling leaves, the distant call of unseen creatures, the whisper of grass stirred by the wind. Braze breathed it in, letting the solitude settle as easily as the flames settled into their rhythm.

Saram wasn't expecting to be able to find her borrowed gunship waiting back at Roche, but there it was. It was precisely as she had left it, lacking aft port and starboard turrets and with no missiles loaded. There was another note from her ori'vod stuck to the pilot's seat, "Just keep it till you buy yourself something longer ranged." The gunship was far from missed, it was one in a long line due to be modernized. Even so, she was thankful to her vod for it.

Once the jump was initiated, Saram dozed off. The ship would wake her via linked her linked neural interface. Sleep was something she learned that you caught up on when the opportunity to do so safely presented itself. This was hardly the first time she'd slept in armor and it would hardly be the last. The impulse sent over her neural interface alerted her to the fact that the ship had dropped out of hyperspace hours later. Saram woke with a yawn, pulling up the nav coordinate list mentally and having the computer plot a flightpath.

It was night time on Ossus when she landed a short ways off from the old Jetii ruins. Pretty standard operational security, if anyone had followed her, she wasn't going to lead them directly back to camp. Thankfully she'd reloaded her magazines back on Roche so as she was leaving her ship, her beskar'gam's active camouflage activated, she took comfort in the fact that if something were to happen she had a full kit.

The moment she stepped out of the ship, she could see the campfire's glow in the distance, let alone it's thermal signature. She was pleasantly surprised to note Braze's signature nearby. She deactivated the armor's camouflage a little distance away so as not to startle him, not that she believed for a moment that he missed her landing even though he more than likely couldn't sense her the armor's cloned Taozin nodule and voidstone lining. He was caring something that looked vaguely Tusken to her out of wood. Once she was in audible range without having to artificially increase the volume of her voice, she decided to inquire if she could join him, "Mind if I join you, ad'ika?"

Braze looked up and smiled at her. " Of course, I welcome your company. " Braze greeted as he let out a soft sigh and turned the stick over in his hands before holing it up and looking at it against the fire light. "Credit for your thoughts?" Braze asked curiously wondering what might be on Saram Kote Saram Kote 's mind as he moved to offer his stick to her as if offering her an opportunity to over look the craftsman ship of it so far.

"Credit for your thoughts?"

Her mind instantly shifted to the bounty she had just undertaken, it had been occupying her thoughts, though she quickly shook them from her mind. She popped the seal on her helmet and affixed it to her utility belt via mag clamp. She ran an armored glove through her hair, sighing. "It's been a haran of a couple of days," she said as she collapsed into one of the chairs, thankfully it took her armored bulk without any apparent complaint. "How have things been here?"

She took another look at the wooden stick in his hands. A frown crossing her features. The name of the Tusken weapon in question was for whatever reason not crossing her mind. She also remembered that Braze mentioned having given her rifle to a Tusken. "Spent some time with the Tuskens? It's impressive work." She let out a breath, her filter dropping for long enough for her next words to slip out, "Ad'ika, you have to be the strangest Jedi I've ever met."

Braze smiled at that. "Funny… people don't usually think I'm a normal Jedi," he said. "I'm not entirely sure I understand why that is. Makes me wonder what kind of reputation the Jedi even have outside the Temple walls these days."

His gaze drifted toward the stick in his hand.
"I'm starting to think the Order's been a bit too lenient in recent years. From what I can tell, things aren't quite the way they used to be, better in some ways, worse in others. It's almost like no one can even agree on what it means to be a Jedi anymore."

He turned the stick thoughtfully.
"There are countless cultures across the galaxy, each with their own ways of marking the great moments in life. But a few things seem universal… coming of age, for instance... it's one of those milestones that transcends intergalactic borders and species."

Braze's voice softened just a touch, "I try to learn what I can from others. We're taught to show love and compassion, but to me that also means striving to understand others. You can't hope to walk in another's shoes if you never stop to see why things are the way they are."

He paused, turning his palms upward and looking down at them.

"Culture is important to a person's identity... and so is their species, and even their race. All of it shouldn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but it does. It's what helps shape a person's identity.

My father was Echani, and my mother is Thyrsian and Atrisian.

The Echani have historically been a matriarchal, caste-influenced society. Their political structure is overseen by an all-female council. Core to Echani identity is the belief that combat is a form of communication. They see dueling, often unarmed or with minimal gear, as a ritual by which one can know another's character or truth. They prize agility, speed, fluid transitions, grace, and the ability to read an opponent's motion rather than rely on brute force. Their worldview tends to value silence, observation, nonverbal cues, and internal discipline.

The Thyrsians, on the other hand... they share ancestry with the Echani, but diverge sharply in appearance, beliefs, and social norms. They tend toward darker skin and darker hair. Many Echani are visually almost indistinguishable from one another, while Thyrsians are far more individually distinct. Thyrsian society is described as patriarchal. They follow a solar religion, rather than the more lunar or reflective spiritual leanings of the Echani. Their combat style and martial ethos differ: Thyrsians favor heavy armor, heavier weapons, and a more direct martial expression, whereas in many Echani duels, armor and weapons are eschewed so that movement, body language, and pure technique are emphasized.

Then you have... Atrisians. They are famous for Jar'Kai dueling swords, and in fact, the appellation Planet of Twin Swords is sometimes used to evoke Atrisia's cultural identity. Their martial tradition emphasizes skill, elegance, and discipline, and dueling is a cultural touchstone.

All of those are, in some way or fashion, warrior-driven cultures that value martial artistry.

And yet... I am Jedi. The Jedi are meant to value peace... martial arts are for protection of the self and others."

He went quiet for a moment, his gaze distant.

"The Jedi Code begins with, 'There is no emotion, there is peace.' The Order views peace not as the absence of conflict, but as inner harmony... calm in the Force, discipline over impulse. A Jedi's ideal state is serenity, even in battle, so they don't act out of anger, fear, or hatred. That's the intention of Jedi training and ethics, though... not all Jedi actually live up to that.

The Jedi train in martial arts and lightsaber combat primarily to defend.

So what does that make me? I... am still Jedi. We're meant to value peace, to fight only in defense of life. But I was born from people who find truth in the fight itself. Sometimes I wonder if I inherited too much of that... or not enough.

When does defense become domination? When does peacekeeping become control? Can one truly understand peace without knowing war?"

It was di'kutla, but she'd never thought about what cultures Jetii might have come from or how it might have affected them. Beyond lamenting the children lost to the Jetii that was. Echani, Atrisian and Thyrisan? Haran, a lot more made sense about Braze now, perhaps too much. The way he spoke about the cultures that his parents hailed from, as though he wasn't a part of them, but would she do any different if she were taken at such a young age? Then again, she didn't envy the poor shabuir who would have dared to have tried. Thank the Manda that she had no affinity for the jetii'draal.

Her opinion of Braze's talk of the Jedi and how much they valued peace showed instantly on her features. Peace? What the shab did the Jetii know about peace. The Jetii of the modern age were war loving elitist hypocrite shabuire, most of the ones she or hers had the misfortunate of dealing with in any case. Perhaps Braze was like the clans of Breshig in that regard, holding onto an ideal that most if not every other Mandalorian had little to no regard for. Then again, that was the point she'd raised, Braze was unlike most other Jedi she'd run into, and she'd seen her fair share of different manner of force users.

"Living by an ideal the galaxy has all but forgotten," she sighed, pausing before catching his gaze again. "The clans of Breshig know a thing or two about that. I know a thing or two about that." Another pause, "I meant what I said, I've never really met a Jedi like you, ad'ika. Only, you talk of Atrisian, Echani and Thyrissian culture like they are external to you. Does being a Jedi mean giving that up? And not exactly by choice if I understand things correctly." She was asking, but Saram already had some idea of what the answer was. She was more asking to verify if that was the case, and if so, to see if that bothered him any.

Braze looked at her before looking in to the embers of the fire.

"Well... No... traditionally the Jedi Order doesn't require initiates to abandon their species, culture, or heritage outright. The Code teaches detachment from attachments and identity as a source of ego or division, but it doesn't ask beings to erase who they are. The Order values the Force as universal... beyond species or culture... so a Jedi's loyalty is to the Force first, rather than homeworld or family.

Because younglings are taken to the Temple at a very early age... often before forming strong cultural ties, most grow up immersed only in Jedi teachings and Temple life. So they naturally lose touch with their heritage. It's not forced assimilation, but it does result in a kind of cultural blank slate. For example... A Twi'lek or Mirialan Jedi might retain visual elements of their people... but may not speak their native language or practice their homeworld's customs. Jedi raised outside the Temple, or who join later in life , tend to retain more of their cultural personality and mannerisms.

Jedi culture... is my culture. " He explained simply. He thought about Jasper Kai'el Jasper Kai'el and sighed settling back a bit further. "I was temple raised from a young age. " Braze offered. " I have faint memories of my parents but I don't really know them... not any more. Jasper was a council member when we met. A figure of authority and reverence. A figure of importance in the order... And then he became my master. He taught me much about life beyond the temple walls... in away... he set me free and showed me how big the galaxy really was. "
