DEPLOYABLE SOLAR SAIL

DESCRIPTION

The Solar Sail Skimmer is a lightweight recreational flying craft built around a long, narrow deck, similar in shape to a longboard skateboard. Intended for personal transport, aerial sport and recreational racing, it combines conventional repulsorlift technology with a deployable solar sail based on the principles used by larger solar sailing vessels.

With the sail folded, the skimmer operates on high-powered repulsorlifts. It remains fast and responsive, although its cruising altitude is considerably lower than when the sail is deployed. The rider steers and adjusts lift through foot pressure and shifts in body weight, while a separate pedal controls the auxiliary thruster.

Deploying the sail brings the skimmer's full flight capabilities into use. An articulated mast extends above the deck, unfurling an energy-reactive membrane that activates the sail field. This increases the available thrust, raises the flight ceiling and improves control during high-speed manoeuvres.
