Affiliation: Ultimatum and LOOM
Manufacturer: LOOM
Model: Satellite Retribution Class
Modularity: No
Production: Minor
Material: Durasteel, Computer components, electrical equipment, Transparisteel
Classification: Planetary defense/siege satellite

Length: 5 meters
Width: 5 meters
Height: 7 meters
Armament: 0
Hangar: N/A
Special Features:
Solar Chasiter is made to redirect a large area of light into a tight beam that can be aimed at a ground or space target, this can be used as a very powerful source of solar energy.
The station also has the ability to tighten the beam of light into a destructive force that can be aimed space-ward or to the ground.
Maneuverability:15
Speed Rating:
Speed is dependent on orbital velocity of each planet, can increase speed slightly above base speed
Hyperdrive Class: N/A
Strengths:
+Powerful Weapon
+Small and therefore sometimes difficult to detect
+Low maintenance
+Can be aimed at the ground or at large starships
Weaknesses:
-No defences
-When anything is between the star and the satellite it cannot do anything other than move
-Controlled via computer and requires that someone know what is being aimed at
-Relatively slow turning
Description:
The Solar Chastiser is the first of LOOM's productions in two ways. It is the first production period as well as the first production to not be attached to Ultimatum's personal use. Ultimatum had taken a break from designing droids and similar tech and turned his attention to the defense of planets, an important factor for most governments. He intended these as prototypes for Mustafar's personal defense and maybe later being given as gifts to factions.
The satellite is constructed to collect a large amount of solar rays from outside the atmosphere. Between mirrors and lens the satellite bends the light into a single concentrated beam or destructive force. However, this was not Ultimatum's original intention for the design. He had initially planned for these satellites to aim extra light from the stars onto solar panels, allowing for an immense increase in power production on planets with open skies and bright stars. It was when he decided to add lenses to the satellite that he realized the opportunity that this could open up. By firstly using mirrors to create a single beam out of a large area of light, concentration being about 1/10, and secondly taking that beam and pushing it through a lens that tightened it even more, at best concentration 1/15.
On top of the effects of light entering the atmosphere, Ultimatum found that the weapon had difficulty working in areas of high humidity, the water tended to act as a natural refraction object and broke the strength of the beam. It becomes little more than a brilliant light show. It did not have difficulty in piercing heavy dust cover or other such non-water based covering. The weapon did not require a long time to cool down as excess heat would bleed off into space, however if the satellite had some object move between it and the star effectiveness vanished almost completely, the strength of the beam lost near all its power. Further, the satellite orbits a planet and therefore does not have the ability to move about and aim at targets at any place. The satellite has limited ion engine power to allow for fine tuning adjustments of aim and slowing or speeding of orbit. The power source for its ion drive is a small portion of the solar energy that it collects. This power is normally not in use, however it is most commonly used to move the lens and mirrors to achieve an optimal position for the most sunlight in almost any given area. The other use is as a propulsion system to allow slight maneuvering and pushing it faster in its orbit or moving it slower.
Development Thread: Can make on if needed
Intent: To create a weapon that will act as a cost effective planetary defense and siege weapon
Who Can Use This: Only those that have been given it by Ultimatum
Primary Source: N/A

Hello there, nice sub!

Please remove this:

the beam could be used to pierce through near any material physical or shield based.
The weapon is pretty low tech, and the size of a turbolaser. It shouldn't have any blanket statements on being able to pierce nearly any shield or material.

FYI the atmosphere will also refract light, which is why space to ground lasers are very hard to do. Space > Atmosphere is the same as Air > Water.

How large is the lens that you're using to focus? Solar energy from a few metres across really isn't a lot of power. Not even enough to boil a kettle really.

Thanks!

So I removed the statement that you asked and I added that the atmosphere caused refraction trouble as well. I had forgotten about that fact, thanks for reminding me!

As for lens and amount of sunlight. The total amount of light collected is a five by five meter area of light. That area, 25 square meters, is then reflected into the satellite and it becomes a smaller area, the lens at the end at like a magnifying glass for sunlight in everyday life. Does that answer the question?

I took inspiration from the Orbital Solar Energy Transfer Satellites. I assumed that since they had basic sunlight reflected, though a much larger area, that if one were to take a smaller area of light and refine it then it could be equal in piercing power, though it won't have the same mass destruction property simply because it is not as big. Hence my statement about burning through almost any substance.

Okie doke. That's going to be pushing around 25kW through it. So I imagine similar to a star wars hand held blaster, but with a constant stream. Definitely would have some niche uses.

Pending approval.
