NUBIA

The acidic smell of rain pouring down the lower levels of Nubia reminds me of a scene all-too familiar. The way the water splashes on the canopy, how the neon lights reflect on the puddles, the ashy stench from the cheap noodle bars, the deadbeat drunks grazing the dirty alleyways, spending the rest of their credits on temporary release and instant gratification, while their family is facing a slow death of hunger and sorrow, it all effortlessly takes me back to the days of old, the cold, harsh reality of life right in the former center of the great Galactic Alliance.

I was sent here, with the Grandmaster of the NJO herself, to uncover and solve the mystery of a presumably darkside-aligned serial-killer. Having spent most of my last year on Sith space, the council deemed me suitable for this mission. Coupled with my way-too-deep experience living, getting-by in an urban underground environment, I can offer quite substantial assistance for Valery, who at this point I can consider as somewhat a close friend.

Funny how life goes, it feels just like yesterday when I talked to her personally for the first time, all anxious and even a bit scared.

The flight to Nubia flew so quickly. We caught-up on life, I haven't been spending time in the Core when the Dark Empire invaded, and we brainstormed about the mission. Our suspect could be a Sith, yet the reckless operations, so deep in GA space, they're most likely an unaffiliated darksider. Should be clearer once we go through our laundry list.

We stopped in front of a shack where one of the supposed eyewitnesses live. The place and the family living there reminds me of our place back then in Coruscant. Five people in a very small room, thin and dirty mattresses right beside a barely standing dining table, refrigerator as the only source of light. Are we really doing the best we could, if billions of people are still living under this condition?

I greeted the middle-aged lady, handing her a bag of meat and basic sustenance. That's the least I can do for potentially putting this family at the crosshair.

"The shadow, it didn't move like a man. The movement was so erratic, and I can only hear the victim. That's when I started running away from the area. I'm lucky he was so focused on his victim." The middle child, a boy around the age of thirteen and fifteen told us. Escaping a rampaging darksider after coming so close to them should've been nearly impossible, unless... right. Tapping into the Force, I could feel that this boy has a connection to it. I glanced at Valery to see if she noticed the same thing as well. There are probably thousands of Force-sensitive children in the galaxy who never got the chance to learn of their ability due to their circumstances. That could've been me if I wasn't so lucky to be caught by a Jedi.

"Are you sure that it's a man?" I asked the kid since he referred to the John Doe as he.

"I only saw shadow, it was big. Could be a woman too, I guess."

I took another look at Valery. Perhaps she has some questions that would help our investigation.

"Did you feel anything when you saw this Shadow?" Valery asked, her eyes briefly shifting to Aymeric. It was her way to acknowledge this boy's presence in the Force. Perhaps it had allowed him to feel something unique when he encountered this strange shadow he spoke of. If not, there was little else she could get out of him. He hadn't seen what they were after, so all she had to go off of was that it moved in peculiar ways.

Not that it'd be trouble for the two of them.

Valery had joined Aymeric because she knew him to be a capable Shadow. These types of missions were often assigned to him, which meant he had plenty of experience on his own. But together they made an even better team, so whatever this Shadow was, Valery felt confident that they'd be able to handle it.

"If you know someone who might have seen it, I'd also like to know."

NUBIA

It was frightening. Like something or someone was stalking me and waiting to strike,” He answered with unease in his voice. The poor boy probably can still remember it in his nightmare. To have such an encounter with the dark-side, so early in your life. It could change a person.

It stayed for a while, even after I made it back here.” The boy added. A soft smile formed in my face seeing the interaction. He seems to be more receptive and talkative to Valery. I imagine after having seven kids, talking to a child becomes more natural. Even in the context of revisiting traumatic experiences.

I’m not sure. Some people frequent the corner dumpster in that area to scavenge, but I didn’t see anyone that day.” He answered Valery’s follow-up question. The scavenger who had found the suffocated corpse was perhaps one of them, yet he was already fully questioned.

The evidences so far indicate a Sith, but I’m not really sure. This deep in the core, just slaughtering random victims like a madman? There’s something missing here.

Did you see an unusual bright light? Red, yellow, or purple maybe?

And as I suspected, the kid shakes his head.

I turned my attention to Valery, nodding my head towards the door for a private conversation.

I suspect a dark-side spirit shenanigans,” I leaned my head slightly at Valery, telling my verdict of this case with a low voice. No lightsabers, Force-imbued markings, random victims.

Shall we?” I gestured for us to go directly to the crime scene. If it was really a malicious spirit, we should be able to track it from the skid-marks left in the scene.

"Alright, thank you for telling us what you know." Valery offered a kind smile but didn't elaborate on her questions or even follow up on his answers. He was a kid, so she didn't want to scare him by theorizing about this Dark Side entity while he was still here. It was likely he'd have plenty of nightmares already, so her plan was to put his mind at ease. Together with Aymeric, she was confident enough that she'd be able to handle it.

"I suspect a dark-side-"

"Ah!" Valery snapped to cut him off mind-sentence for the same reason.

Not in front of the kid.

Instead, Valery leaned in and dipped her head in agreement. She then smiled back at the kid and also dipped her head towards him, "We're going to take care of this, alright? Head inside, get some good sleep and we'll have it handled before you know it." With that said, Valery turned away and looked at Aymeric.

"I think we're on the same page and if it is a spirit, we'll have to be careful. They're not taken down as easily."
