OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION

GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Name: Skellege (single)/ Skeld (demonym)/ Skellegae (plural)
  • Designation: Sentient
  • Origins: Barren Planet Skelticar; See here
  • Average Lifespan: With hive-members, 80-90 years. Exiled from hive, 25-30 years.
  • Estimated Population: Planetary, with the capability to become Inter-Planetary at any moment
  • Description: At a distance, a Skeld seems to be a sub-species of Acklay, however the differences become most apparent when a Skeld stands on it's hind legs to walk like any other bipedal species. A Skeld's hind legs resemble that of a cricket's, signifying great leg strength. A Skellege has two large mantis-like arms stemming from the shoulder that allow for slashing and ripping, and two smaller, crab-like arms coming out of the front thorax. A Skeld has large tubes on it's back that excrete wastes and bi-products. A Skeld's most prominent feature is it's large crest atop it's head.

PHYSICAL INFORMATION
  • Breathes: Type III atmosphere. (mostly carbon and sulfur)
  • Average Height of Adults: 4-6 meters
  • Average Length of Adults: 3-4 meters
  • Skin color: Anywhere from desert sand to peach pink. Although some have been known to adopt a crimson red color the closer they live to volcanic zones.
  • Hair color: N/A
  • Distinctions: Male Skellegae are usually larger than the females and their crests grow upwards rather than slip back. Both sexes' crests grow larger with age. (estimated two centimetres every Earth Standard Year). Redder complexion depending on how close it lives to a volcanic zone. Rarely, a female Skellege can become an 'Empress,' though the details of this sort of ascension are unclear, all that is known is that a Skeld 'Empress' must endure great pain for this transformation to take place. A Skeld 'Empress' seems to share a bond with every Skellegae no matter the color or sex. A Skeld 'Empress' seems to be the central point of all Skeld knowledge, and as such are a priority target for offending civilizations. A Skeld 'Empress' size can range from 10-20 times the size of a regular Skeld female.
  • Races: There appear to be three distinct variations of a Skeld, the Crimson-blood, the ground-kin, and the abstinent.
  • Force Sensitivity: Non-sensitive, in fact the Skeld seem slightly resistant to the natural pull of the force.

Strengths:
  • Durable, able to withstand severe bodily harm as well as pressure up to 2,000 psi. (not in juncture)
  • Natural resistance to the force, while not totally immune, they can still shrug off a force push.
  • Fire-retardant, to put into perspective, they can survive for a whole minute inside a supernova.
  • Quick learner, they have a near-photographic memory.

Weaknesses:
  • Bulky, size isn't always a benefit.
  • Near-sighted, they can see you, they just don't know you're 'you'
  • Hive-dependent, if they don't have five or more other individuals of their kind within five hundred meters, their-minds will deteriorate.
  • Definitely not laser-proof, that's right, one good light saber slash or a well-placed blaster shot can pierce right through them like butter.
  • While rare, some Skeld have been known to be allergic to magnesium. For some, this can be lethal.
CULTURE
  • Diet: Carnivore, other; they need copious amounts of iron to maintain their well-being, they also need carbon to breathe.
  • Communication: huttese, Aqualish, Rodian, Aurebesh, and common (these are heavily accented); lastly, Skeld, a complex series of chitters, huffs and occasional shrieking.
  • Technology level: On the verge of Galactic Standard, always advancing and come every mass extermination, huge backtracking takes place. The Skeld always rebuild, though, and they come back better than before.
  • Religion/Beliefs: The large majority of Skeld believe that the 'High' Skellege was an omen, that in tragedy, there is always benefit.
  • General behavior: The den of a Skeld is made deep within the underground hive stemming from "spawning chambers" (an intersection of many den entrances). Within these dens lays the severely drained female matriarch, the male Skeld stays on guard during the nights to keep the real threats at bay. A Skeld mating ritual takes place anywhere from the moment of adolescence (25 years of age) to 30 years of age. Males find a suitable female and bow their crest, if the female bows her crest in return, then a courtship is made. If two males both want the same female, then both males will stand high, and flare up their crests. The Female will usually choose the larger crest, ergo, the older male. Rarely, the younger male will then attempt to fight the older one, this usually ends with the younger Skeld perishing and becoming food for Skeld Larvae. After a courtship is made, the "newly-wed" Skellegae will dig a den together, a process that usually takes a day or two. Upon completion, the two Skellegae will mate for a week. Depending on the individuals' fertility, the Skellege female will produce anywhere from 50-1000 eggs. The eggs themselves are no larger than the tip of a humans' pinky finger. After the female lays the eggs in a carefully swept shallow hole, the female will lay herself around the nest. The ground's natural geothermal heat will provide enough warmth for the eggs to incubate. Even so, only 60% of Skeld eggs hatch, as the thermal energy can sometimes be unreliable. The Skeld eggs will take only two Earth Standard months to grow, upon hatching, the male Skeld will take the Larvae into the connected 'spawning chamber' carefully, where the other dens’ Skellegae will do the same. There, the Larvae will mature in a pool of mucus excreted by the mothers over the months, and for at least three years, the larvae slowly become nymphs under the watchful eyes of the male Skellegae, who each watch for one night consecutively so the Skeld females can be tended to. The Skeld nymphs will crawl out of the pool and find their ways back to the den they were conceived in when they are matured enough. Where they are taken care of by the now recovered female Skeld. The male Skellegae will visit the den every so often to bring food and to bond with their young by sharing some knowledge through their crests, but otherwise they are out of the picture. Every night, the Females will gather the young, and share knowledge through their crests, this is how all Skellegae learn so quickly. The females hold the most sacred and strong bond will the Skellegae, and so they are the most protected next to the young.
  • General behavior, Cont. part 1; While most Skeld do end up mating, for every 1000 Skellegae who do mate, there are at least 10 who either don't find a mate, or just lose the urge slowly over time. These Skeld are called “The Abstinent.” They differ physically from most Skeld in that they almost always lose their pigment to a very lighter tone. These Skellegae serve as the biggest brains of their respected community (hive). They are the scavengers, the learners, the generals, if it isn't mating, it's them. While some males who have mated join these 'Abstinent' on some exploration and learning endeavors, they rarely make the biggest decisions as they are well behind in the academic forte. Even still, these 'Abstinent' all still gather with those who have mated to share thoughts, memories, and knowledge when an 'Empress' calls for the hive to mingle.
  • General behavior, Cont. part 2; With all this movement and closeness between the Skeld, there couldn't be too many who decide to take their own paths, right? Well, sort of, but there are a select few who dare to explore father than the others, and those who would outright live on the edge of a volcano. The 'Crimson-bloods' are a small hive who live on, around and underneath a volcanic zone. They do not differ much from the other more common 'Ground-Kin' Skellegae accept that they live for heat and have much darker, redder skin pigment. They have adapted well to the extreme heat of the volcanic zone so much so that they have been observed to swim in magma/lava rivers and pools. These extreme conditions haven't impacted their way of life in the slightest, accept that they eat their iron in molten form. These Skeld are the closest thing to a thrill-seeker you will ever see in a Skellege.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
  • One seemingly rare occurrence took place some time before the Separatists took power in where a Skeld 'Empress' was created that was more than 50 times the size of a regular Skeld female. This proved taxing on the Skeld 'Empress' as it lived for no more than two Earth Standard Weeks. The current whereabouts of the remains of this 'High' Skellege would be the termite nest-like mountain that sits at the magnetic north for the planet Skelticar.
  • While these hive-minded beings aren't immune to being reverted to a more bestial nature when separated, there have been records of a few Skeld who maintained near-sentience while far away from their hive. Though, when they returned to their hive, the damage had already taken it's toll. And so these exiles were eaten to ease their inner torment.
  • While only a rumor, there is tell of one Skeld who maintained true sentience after the 'Skellege Migration Incident' (see planet history for more info.) said to be called Skellege Traxi, a title of great dishonor amongst the Skeld. This Skeld is rumored to have been an 'Abstinent' who never shared thoughts or knowledge, this Skeld is likened as a traitor and an outlaw by the Skellegae. Although, no one can truly say if this particular Skeld even Existed.
  • The Skellegae who are given the title, 'Nauss' seem to hold some sort of notoriety among Skeld. Most seem to be war heroes or a member of the smartest Skellegae.
  • Similar to the ‘Nauss’ title, ‘Charl’ seems to be a sort of honorary title for non-abstinent skeld who accomplish grand things. Though, a few abstinent skeld have held this title, no non-abstinent skeld has ever been awarded the title of ’Nauss.’
