War Marshal Helix
Technological Terror
OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
The result of Helix's continuing experiments with Otherspace-altered metallurgy, Shiftsteel is yet another bizarre and anomalous substance to come out of the group's laboratory-mines.
Defying exact classification, Shiftsteel shows characteristics of both a polymer and a metal. It is light, flexible enough to be bent by bare hands, yet resilient enough to resist moderate damage from kinetic impacts or energy exposure.
Shiftsteel's most notable trait, however, is its mimicry. Upon exposure to a thin band of infrasound frequencies, the substance responds by altering its surface color and texture to match whatever it is touching. Under normal circumstances, Shiftsteel is a silvery, almost white-gray color. In initial testing, the substance could adopt the rough brown of jungle trees, the mottled green of tall grass, or the loose tan of sand dunes with equal ease.
This allows objects or armor coated in the material to quickly gain camouflage appropriate to its environment. Once galvanized by its sonic trigger, Shiftsteel takes approximately 15 seconds to adapt to the surface it is touching.
While incredibly versatile, the substance's limitations should be understood by soldiers who are to utilize it. Shiftsteel's anomalous properties are a simple color change, and will not suffice to fool scanners, motion sensors, or even a particularly discerning naked eye. Likewise, moving while under the effect will immediately expose the object or person so concealed.

- Changes color to match its background upon exposure to sound frequencies.
- Chameleonic: Shiftsteel possesses the ability to alter its surface color and (to a limited extent) texture to blend in with its surroundings.
- Light: Somewhere between a plastic and a metal, Shiftsteel is lightweight while still possessing some moderate resilience.
- Skin Deep: Shiftsteel's self-camouflage is only a color change, and will not fool scanners.
- From Beyond: Crafting Shiftsteel is impossible outside the confines of Otherspace and its anomalous energies.
