Private Shifting Sands

Persephone peered at the jars. Different pieces of the plant itself. Some larger than others. Liin Terallo Liin Terallo was correct, they had been a failsafe against extinction. She was very confident private samples had to be in greenhouses. Some old noble woman probably had one sitting on a drawing room table. Running in those circles one tended to see things.

"Maybe instead of cloning, splicing on to rootstock? I am not overly familiar with gardening. Or genetics. However...something for a trusted scientist to decide. Realistically I only need maybe three jars of tissue samples. You are more than entitled to the rest of them. You helped out and I think you were researching plant life back on New Cov? Perhaps this can be a pet project."

I looked more closely at the jars, considering Persephone's suggestion. "Splicing onto rootstock might actually be a better approach." I crouched beside the samples, careful not to disturb them. "It would preserve the original tissue while giving it something viable to grow against. Assuming that the rootstock is compatible, of course. I'd want to determine that before attempting anything."

I glanced toward Persephone. "Three jars should be more than enough for you. I'll take a few as well. I suppose it could make an interesting pet project." The idea seemed to amuse me slightly. "I haven't worked with living plant material in quite some time. It might be nice to return to something that doesn't involve trying to understand what an entire government is doing. Though I reserve the right to blame you if I end up with an entire greenhouse full of poisonous orchids." I offer her a bit of a teasing smile.

"The orchids are only poisonous if one distills them down to be so. I have zero desire to do so, like you said, more pet project. Can it be done? Are these samples even viable enough to produce flowers? We can share notes, this is more your realm than mine. I will have to get outside consultation. A bit different than the artifacts I am used to, but similar in many ways."

Looking around the laboratory, they had discovered all they could. There was not much more either one of them could do in the moment. Not without knowing more once the orchids were grown. Half a mystery solved in her eyes.

"Zee, lets lock this place down and leave. Come on Miss Terallo, we can start making our way out. Zee will seal all parts of the laboratory in case we need to return. I have a feeling we may once these plants grow. Or not grow. Going to be an interesting experiment."

Tucking the small jars in her jacket, Persephone started to lead the way out as sparks flew as Zee sealed the doors shut.
