Description:The Devastator artillery shell is more or less like any other smart artillery shell with the exception of one thing. STI has re-purposed some old technology, and installed it into this shell, giving it a far more deadly purpose. That technology is field disruptor tech. With it, this shell has four minutes to be able to bypass shields on its way to a target once fired. If the target is farther away than that, the power cell powering the field will fail, and it will revert back to a standard smart shell. The fins allow the shell to maneuver in and atmospheric setting to reach a moving target. However in space, it is reduced further to a dumb shell, and is a point and fire weapon with no ability to maneuver.
Special Note: While the technology to make this shell is possible. And was indeed accomplished, the current design has proven to be cost prohibitive. STI is currently seeking ways to make the same technology, but at a lower cost to once again bring this powerful weapon back to its full potential. Till then, this shell exists with all its capabilities minus the field disruptor portion. There are currently only three fully functional Devastator Artillery Shells with the shield bypass ability still in existence (1 of each class, which is described below), and are in Ice's private storage vault among other things the man has collected over the years.
The other feature of note which comes with the "smart" portion of the shell, is it has a proximity / timer trigger. Once the shell has reached its target / distance, it will explode. And with the strength of the thermal detonator dialed up because of the increase in size, the fifty meter blast radius makes it an excellent flack shell as well. Otherwise, the shell will continue on (such as in space) for 7 minutes. At which point the timer imbedded in the shell will set off the explosive regardless. This safety feature was added in case of misses, or the shell failed to detonate on impact for whatever reason. It was also decided that a single explosive yield range would not be very flexible. So STI has designed this weapon with a choice of three tiers. Class A Devatstaor Artillery Shells have a fifty meter blast radius as mentioned. Class B's have a twenty meter blast radius, since they use a traditional class A thermal detonator for the explosive. And Class C's have a five meter blast radius as they use class E thermal detonators for the explosive. It should also be noted the shell encasing the explosive material and electronics acts as a Faraday cage. So EMP attacks are useless against it. It was an unexpected benefit.
In the end, it is still basically just an artillery shell with a unique twist and a good punch.
