STRENGTHS
  • Great Firepower — With a great multitude of weapon emplacements installed, this capital ship was designed to unleash an incredible amount of firepower, capable of pummeling enemy ships, or leveling entire fortresses from above.
  • Big Shock — The Sentinel can neutralize another capital ship with the magnapulse cannon.
  • Some Durability — With its impervium armor plating and deflector shields, the Alliance-class can endure some direct enemy fire from another capital ship.
  • Slave-Rigged — The Sentinel has a slave circuit system installed which saves a significant amount of labor that would otherwise be necessary to run a capital ship of this size.
  • Big Shock — The Sentinel can neutralize another capital ship with the magnapulse cannon.
  • Electrical Disturbances — The Sentinel-class was designed to have significant resilience to electromagnetic pulse weaponry.
  • Big Guns — The Sentinel was equipped with some powerful, long-ranged weaponry, that can puncture enemy shields and hulls from a far distance.
WEAKNESSES
  • Slow Targeting, Magnapulse Cannon — The magnapulse cannon this capital ship was equiped with can shoot a large electromagnetic bolt that travels in a straight line. Because of the lack of maneuverability, it can be a challenging feat to land a blow on fast moving targets.
  • Power Up Time, Magnapulse Cannon — The magnapulse cannon this capital ship was equipped with takes approximately eight minutes to power-up, or re-charge, before it can unleash its large electromagnetic bolt toward the target.
  • Forward Firing Arc — A greater part of this capital ship’s weapon emplacements are concentrated toward its bow. This capital ship is placed at a disadvantage when it’s being attacked from the broadsides or from the behind.
  • Exposed Firepower — Because a greater part of this capital ship’s weapon emplacements are concentrated in one area, this also leaves them vulnerable to bomber runs.
  • Maneuverability — This capital ship struggles to deviate from its ongoing trajectory, in the context of a fast-moving battle, it takes a substantial amount of time for the Sentinel-class to turn directions. To change direction requires a wide and protracted turn. The capital ship is unwieldy for the helmsman to steer.
  • Exposed Rear — The rear is the only area of the Sentinel-class which lacks weaponry. The lack of weapon emplacements on the aft means the star defender is unable to directly respond to enemy harassment from starfighters. Corollary, it can’t respond to enemy fire from the direction of the aft at all.

DESCRIPTION
The Republic military leadership directed the Federal Cooperative to work on a new deterrent to enemy fleets. This was Project Sentinel – which would aim to build a capital ship that could serve in the vanguard of a fleet.

The engineer team decided on two systems: a magnapulse cannon to knock-out enemy capital ships, and long-range turbolasers. The engineer team debated creating a new ship from scratch but ultimately settled on refitting a couple of Assembly-class fleet carriers that were still in-production.

The engineer team would place the magnapulse cannon where the catapult pressor system would have gone. They shortened the hangar bays to make a second chamber to install a fusion reactor to directly power the magnapulse cannon. Despite the second source of power, the engineers discovered they needed to cut energy expenditures somewhere. Ultimately, they decided to remove two of the support engines to balance energy production and consumption. With this final hurdle removed, construction proceeded forward.

The first Sentinel-class star defenders launched in 860 ABY.

9/9/2020 - Edited down the armaments according to a new personal formula I came-up with to be more consistent across my ship designs. Decreased the armaments by approx. 700 weapon emplacements.

9/11 - Added additional strengths and weaknesses.

9/12 - Changed production from Mass to Limited.
