Locations: Pylos, other bodies in the Argive System and surrounding uninhabited systems
Operations: SMM is primarily a mining company, though it also controls some shipping, storage and surveying assets as well.
Rationale: This company was owned by the Saelari family for decades prior to Aurelia’s birth. With the recent rediscovery of the planet it left the ground and expanded into other areas of the system and neighbouring systems as well.
Tier: Tier 2. The company is only of localised power and influence, though it is extremely profitable.
Description: The Great Darkness was a terrible blight on the galaxy, ushering the galaxy into a terrible age of barbarism and chaos. As discussed in the submissions of Pylos and Aurelia Saelari, one planet passed through this dark age with only minimal losses. The planet was effectively exiled for centuries though, and spaceflight became just a half-forgotten myth.
Amidst it though the Saelari family became hereditary rulers and with their pre-spaceflight technology they set about solidifying their position. One way to do this was by imposing state control over all mining and prospecting. Thus Saelari Mining and Minerals or SMM became a powerful entity two centuries before the present.
When Pylos was brought back to the galaxy by the arrival of Jedi and Republic ambassadors, and the Saelari family were not slow to take control of this unexpected event. First Carus Saelari, then his daughter Aurelia expanded SMM’s control away from just the planet of Pylos, seeking out ores that could improve the planet’s position.
It was a year after the Jedi arrived that SMM prospectors on Pylos’ moon of Mystra uncovered a vast platinum vein and set up a mining facility. Clashes with outsider mining companies hoping to exploit the find led to Aurelia appealing to the Republic for protection. Thus Pylos joined the Republic in exchange for exclusive mining rights to the Argive System.
Borrowing heavily, SMM brought in the best miners and equipment and began to exploit the seam. The platinum found there, despite the costs of extraction, was unusually pure, and soon SMM was producing 250 tonnes of platinum a year. This vast influx of wealth was wisely (and cunningly) used by Aurelia to fund her campaign for the Senate and eventually the Chancellorship. It was also used to fund the development of Pylos and take it into the modern age, even if it was a massive dislocation for the citizens.
After becoming Chancellor Aurelia used her influence to grant her company the rights to nearby systems, and even though platinum production has fallen off since she became a humble senator again SMM is still extremely wealthy in its chosen field of operations.
