Really rather clueless- hello!

I love Star Wars, and I'm quite fond of writing (though never RP before), and this is the prettiest site that combines the two, so I'm here!

But I was wondering, clueless as I am- what do you do once you've made a character, as in thread-joining etiquette? And would one just join a faction, or is more complicated than that?
