SETTING INFORMATION
  • City Name: Ranau
  • Classification: Urban Center
  • Location: Vassek
  • Affiliation: The First Order
  • Demographics: Kaleesh 37% | Human 43% | Other 20%
  • Wealth: Med
Comprised of mostly working class individuals, Ranau is a city of medium wealth. The heart of Ranau's industry are the orchards that grow along the canyon sides, they grow a rare type of cactus pear known only as Incu. Incu is a very sweet fruit it almost tastes like candy but it also holds quite a bit of moisture making it soft to chew and a key plant to have in desert regions as a way to conserve water. Incu can be treated as any fruit as far as cuisine is concerned. Outside of the Incu harvest, Ranau grows a particularly hot pepper that is known as Apoko. The Apoko pepper grows at the top of the canyons surrounding the city thus why there is a law that forbids any building or the creation of speeder pads or even a spaceport atop of the canyons. The Apoko pepper is considered to be mild in heat and can be roasted or smoked, or served raw depending on the dish. Ranau is also known for its fermented foods long before the city had the capability of freezing foods they used the planet's natural heat as a method to dry and preserve their foods. This has created an entirely new industry for Ranau by using their own traditions to create new snacks and treats for the entire First Order.
  • Ranau shares with Advora terraforming technologies and research. Ranau's own geological research firm is often in contact with Advora offices and engineers exchanging information. The city seeks to keep their canyons intact without disturbing or disrupting its natural flow. All architects from Ranau are sent to Advora before returning home. All of Ranau's infrastructure has been created within the canyon itself and over time as the city grew the developers simply pushed the city outward along the natural crevices provided by the canyons.
  • Arts are a key feature of Ranau as many musicians and artists come here to draw inspiration. Ranau Academy of Art boasts one of the finest acoustic programs, as well as impressionistic art programs. Waimau University boasts one of the finer music programs outside of the Victorian Music Academy on Dosuun. Waimau has also been developing a graduate engineering program, graduate music program to compete with Victoria and Ranau Academy of Art - and Astrophysics.

[*]Stability: High
  • It is no secret that the First Order does not tolerate disobedience, citizens of Ranau live safely under the protection of both the Planetary Defense Guard and the white and black armour of Stormtroopers. If there are crimes they're often swept under the rug or handled swiftly by military police who work to ensure justice is served. Ranau is not a city that tolerates crime and to ensure this there are many small stations that maintain surveillance over the population, it also employs many social programs and promotes social events with the aid of private and public partnerships to keep its citizens engaged and away from a criminal life.
  • The First Order respects different cultural and spiritual beliefs, and do not infringe on the rights of others to worship as they see fit. Once more the guard and troopers work with military police to ensure this is carried out. This includes respecting the beliefs of the kaleesh who live within the city's canyon walls.

[*]Description:
  • Built into the base of a canyon, Ranau is often called the Painted City of Vassek. Called this because it seems no matter the time of day it looks beautiful as it plays to the natural beauty surrounding it. Towers are kept to a minimum with nothing taller than the Ha'iiaago Energy Tower as it works to provide power to the entire city. When the sun goes down the name Painted City becomes quite apt, like colours against a canvas they seem to play with the stars that shine above them. Music from various parts of the city echo throughout the canyons, concerts somehow merge into some more grand and walking down one of the many streets or riding on a speeder becomes something more.
  • Ranau has several methods for getting around the speeder, provided by United Speeder Services who rivals Yellow Speeder or Low-Sped as some of the younger kids refer to it as. There's also the Ra-Met, the city's metro that runs underground and the river boat, yes Ranau has a river called Cynthonna the Cynthonna River runs throughout the city and a taxi service is avaliable for those who wish to go down the river. There are several stops that include theaters, restaurants, hotels, and bars, even museums. Natives of the city liked to call it the Tourist River as that's where most of the tourist go, but it's still a lovely place. The Telle Spaceport is the key entrance in and out of the city, it rests far beyond the Energy Tower and sits inside the canyon much like the rest of the city. Due to this there is a size restriction craft must be no more than 140m in length. If the ships are larger than this, then one must take a shuttle from FIRS Zara down to Telle before being able to go elsewhere in the city.

POINTS OF INTEREST
  • Ha'iiaago Solar & Thermal Energy Center: The Ha'iiaago is the main source of both power and water for the city, it works by drawing water from the underground aquifer, filtering and treating the water before sending it out into city pipes. It also draws energy from the planet's core (mainly its heat) and the sun, converting heat into power has been part of Ha'iiaago's and Ranau's way of life for many decades now.
  • Rojo Ventana Credit Union: Headquartered here in Ranau, RVCU has many satellite offices including one on Dosuun, Annaj and Lipsec. RVCU works to provide financial services to musicians, artists, actors, writers and anyone who works in the arts or fine arts. Recently they've begun to open themselves up to other occupations as a way to compete with FONCU its main rival.
  • Ute'Rao Geological Research Firm: Due to Ranau's unique composition Ute'Rao was founded to study and research it and selling this data to other cities or planetary governments within the First Order. Of course, FODOS (First Order Department of Science) has a heavy-handed presence here ensuring the data is handled properly and securely. Ute'Rao also accepts information from other planets to study it on their behalf or even universities such as Avalonia University.
  • Yazhi Parkade and Market: Many privately owned speeders or luxury vehicles (boats or craft) are housed here at the Yazhi where a market has sprung up to sell produce, meats both dried and fresh, seafood, various baked goods, spices and honey. The Market often sells handmade products as created by the local community, there is also a trader's market enabling citizens to trade items instead of just selling them.
  • Waimau University: Music, Engineering and Astrophysics are the three top programs at the university, followed by Mathematics, Geology and Astronomy. They're working on developing graduate programs for their best undergrad programs in the hopes being able to compete with other universities.
  • Ranau Academy of Art: Mainly focuses on traditional arts but RAA has been working on becoming more inclusive on newer art forms as well as studying how music works, how sound moves through music and other sound based movements.
  • Kachin Amphitheater: The best amphitheatre in the city and where all the top acts come to perform, Kachin has perhaps the best acoustics as many swear they can hear concerts from the other end.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

  • Ranau was founded by those fleeing the Gulag Plague in the hopes that it would not find them here. Unfortunately, even the safety of the canyon's walls could not keep them from the plague. It found them and dealt them just as it had the rest of the galaxy. Those that survived went on to found what is now known as Old Ranau, a historical site kept by FIHSS, the First Imperial Historical Sites Services. It started as a working agricultural town that grew into a ranching town and from there it just grew. Progress was temporarily halted by the Netherworld event but even that could not kill the Spirit of Ranau. When the First Order came to Vassek, prosperity seemed to follow as ever since the city has been able to flourish underneath the FO's banner.
  • According to records from Ranau's city hall, the kaleesh here predate human immigration many of them resettling here from the third moon of Vassek in the attempts to flee the plague. They were soon joined by other species and eventually humans, initially, the Kaleesh were resistant to outsiders and most especially humans. Racial tensions ran thick until the Netherworld event, and it was this event that brought the two species closer. The kaleesh of Ranau redefined what it meant to be a warrior while the humans embraced part of the warrior traditions presented by the kaleesh. There are schools devoted to fighting within the city, and while they are not actively promoted they still exist.

Can we get some more information on the Kaleesh living here? Were they part of the original colonists or did they immigrate later? Does their warrior culture and spiritual beliefs clash at all with the more high-minded aspects of Ranau, or did the Kaleesh of Ranau eventually lose these beliefs due to isolation?
