PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Qiyara is a broad-shouldered woman built more like a shock trooper than an infantry officer. Years of military service have left her physique hard and athletic, with powerful arms and a soldier's posture. Her skin carries a bronze complexion inherited from her Qilin ancestry while her dirty-blonde hair is kept cropped short and practical.

The most obvious sign of her heritage is a single horn protruding from the center of her forehead. While less pronounced than that of a full-blooded Qilin, it is impossible to conceal and has made her an object of curiosity, suspicion, and ridicule throughout her military career.

Off duty she favors simple black tank tops, fatigues, and worn combat boots. On deployment she wears a modified Imperial Reclamation Authority combat uniform reinforced with additional chest, shoulder, and leg armor. Her equipment is often scratched and patched, a reflection of both heavy service and limited access to prestigious assignments.

PERSONALITY AND BELIEFS

Qiyara learned early that respect was rarely given and often had to be taken. She is blunt, disciplined, and intensely practical. While many officers pursue advancement through politics, she focuses entirely on results. Her reports are concise, her orders clear, and her expectations high.

Years of prejudice from fellow Imperials have left her guarded. She does not easily trust outsiders and rarely discusses her personal life. Despite this, she possesses a fierce loyalty toward those who serve under her command. The soldiers assigned to her squad are often the personnel other units do not want: disciplinary cases, political embarrassments, unusual aliens, underperformers, and social outcasts. Qiyara treats them as soldiers first and rejects the notion that someone's worth is determined by pedigree.

She believes the Empire's ideals of order and stability are worth preserving, but she also believes the Empire frequently fails to live up to those ideals. This belief places her in an uncomfortable middle ground—too loyal to be a dissident and too honest to be a political favorite.

STRENGTHS

• Natural Leader — Experienced at managing difficult personalities and maintaining unit cohesion under pressure.

• Determined — Possesses exceptional mental resilience and refuses to quit when faced with setbacks.

• Veteran Field Officer — Extensive experience in patrols, pacification actions, urban combat, and frontier operations.

• Protective Commander — Earns fierce loyalty from subordinates by sharing risks and placing their survival above her own advancement.

• Physically Powerful — Her mixed heritage grants her notable strength and endurance.

WEAKNESSES

• Distrustful — Has difficulty relying on unfamiliar officers or institutions.

• Career Dead End — Her heritage and reputation have effectively stalled her advancement within the military hierarchy.

• Stubborn — Once committed to a course of action, she is reluctant to reconsider.

• Limited Political Skill — Poor at navigating bureaucracy, making influential enemies more easily than allies.

• Burdened Unit — Her squad is composed largely of rejects, transfers, and problem soldiers, making discipline an ongoing challenge.

HISTORY

Qiyara Vorn was born on a frontier world to a Human father serving in a local defense force and a Qilin mother who had settled far from her ancestral people. Her childhood was marked by constant reminders that she belonged fully to neither side of her heritage. To some she was too Human; to others she was too Qilin.

Seeking purpose, she enlisted in the Imperial military as soon as she was able. Military service offered something she had never possessed: structure. Unfortunately, it also exposed her to new forms of discrimination. While her performance consistently exceeded expectations, promotions arrived slowly and prestigious assignments somehow always went to someone else.

Rather than leave the service, Qiyara endured. She built a reputation for competence in difficult postings that other officers avoided. Border conflicts, anti-piracy operations, reconstruction zones, and garrison worlds became her proving grounds.

When the Imperial Reclamation Authority expanded its Army, Qiyara was offered command of a newly assembled infantry squad. Officially the unit existed to utilize personnel who might otherwise be wasted. Unofficially it served as a dumping ground for soldiers that nobody wanted.

The assignment was intended to sideline her.

Instead, Qiyara embraced it.

Over time the unit became known for accomplishing missions that more prestigious formations considered impossible. Its members remained rough around the edges, but under her leadership they became fiercely loyal and surprisingly effective.

Today, Staff Sergeant Qiyara Vorn commands one of the Imperial Reclamation Authority's most unconventional squads. Few expect greatness from them. Fewer still realize how dangerous they have become.
