Status
Not open for further replies.
Name: Pylos

Region: Colonies
System: Argive
Suns: 1 Medium Yellow
Orbital Position: 1.2AU
Moons: 1 moon, 2,700km in diameter. It is named Mystra. This moon is very important as it contains a large platinum seam, enough to bring the planet back into the modern galaxy.
Coordinates: K16
Rotational Period: 29 hours
Orbital Period: 1.1 Standard Years

Class: Terrestrial
Diameter: 11,229 km in diameter>
Atmosphere: Type I – breathable, if rather thin, equivalent to high altitude on Earth.
Climate: Large frozen ice caps which expand and contract rapidly with the seasons. There are few oceans on Pylos, and most water is collected from infrequent rains, underground resevoirs or desalination. The general climate is that of a ‘cold desert’ like the Gobi on Earth. Temperatures on the night side in winter often fall far below freezing. In summer time in the day, the weather can become quite hot. Winds can be extremely strong, especially along the equator.
Gravity: 0.85G
Primary Terrain: Red desert plains, rocky outcrops and plateaus. Small, extremely salty seas can be found around the equator, and the ice caps cover on average 10% of the planet at any one time.

Native species: None, though there may have been underground microbes at one point.
Immigrated species: Humans, other sentient races, gizka, plants and domestic animals.
Primary languages: Basic
Government: Hereditary Oligarchy, a form of Republican Dictatorship. The Saelari family has been in control of the planet as ‘Consuls’ for almost five centuries.
Population: 70 million. 95% human, 5% misc others.
Demonym: Pylosian
Major cities: Patras, a city of some 8 million people. Smaller cities of Nemea and Argos have about 2 million apiece.
Major imports: Technology, exotic foods, fresh water.
Major exports: Mined ore, processed metals, jewellery.
Affiliation: Member of the Republic, with a Senator represented in the Galactic Senate.

Culture: The Pylosians are a hardy lot, looking back at a long and proud history of survival. As a people they are suspicious of strangers, but warm to those they trust. In the area of arts the Pylosians are fantastically skilled in creation of jewellery. Engraved copper disks or beads are the most common gifts to another, and some people wear many of them around their necks. The harsh and cold environment has also made the Pylosians a communal, family orientated group, especially as settlements are scattered over wide areas, away from effective help. As a group, the concept of democracy and monarchy is viewed with suspicion, even if their leaders are basically a monarchy in all but name.
Technology: During the 400 years darkness the planet regressed to a pre-space travel technology, comparable to the late 20th century on Earth. Since they have re-joined the galaxy, technology has rapidly expanded to standard levels. The extremely rich mineral deposits of the planet have helped here.
History: The planet of Pylos was first discovered in the early days of the Old Republic. Hyperspace trail blazers rapidly discovered the Argive System and marked the 3rd planet as one potentially habitable. All that was missing was a better atmosphere as it was too thin at that time to support life. In the mists of time a terraforming operation was setup, while small settlements in domes colonised part of the southern reaches near the ice caps. Over thousands of years the planet warmed, some of the ice melted, and the atmosphere became more bearable. About the time of the Ruusan Reformation the planet was finally breathable without suits or masks, though it took some getting used to.
Exploration found the planet had considerable water reserves under the planet, and the ice provided an unlimited supply of water when piped down to the equator. There farms sprung up and the distinctive domed settlements became larger. With the explosion of plants the atmosphere grew even better and populations grew. Mining contracts and food production made the inhabitants prosperous but still small in number.

The planetary government, such as it was, developed into an oligarchy where the leaders were elected by a group of the most powerful people on the planet.

(From Aurelia’s bio)
The Gulag Virus was a horrific blight upon the galaxy, leading to four hundred years of stagnation and disorder.

And yet not all places were equally affected. Planets with relatively low populations which had a mix of food production and basic manufacturing lasted better than the great cities or planets given over to industry. In those cases the populations could not be supported by local resources, leading to riots, famine and infection.
In other cases, planets which could support themselves, and which acted quickly, could mitigate the consequences.

One such world was Pylos, a planet in the colonies region of the galaxy. The planet had been terraformed centuries before so that by the time of the virus the atmosphere was breathable, if thin like it were high altitude. The rocky desert had been transformed into areas of growth and abundance contrasted with the stark red plains. By the time of the virus a considerable population of some fifty million lived on the planet, mostly living in large domes with farming domes and open field cultivation helping out. The planet was also fortunately blessed with iron, copper and tin deposits in the southern mountains, and so an industry to refine and smelt these metals was established.

When the plague hit the galaxy the governing oligarchic council ‘The Directory’ imposed an instant quarantine on the planet. People could leave, but no one was allowed to return. Supported by a few ships to enforce this, and the implementation of martial law on the surface, they rode out the initial crisis. That they did was due mainly to the actions of Titus Saelari, one of the Directory’s highest rank members. It was he who insisted on maintaining the quarantine even in the face of demonstrations and debates about it. Some wanted to help those of the galaxy, while others wanted to try and maintain trade with ‘safe planets’, but Titus insisted.

The inevitable result of this was isolation. While the galaxy fell into a profound slump Pylos endured, though civil strife, hunger and other diseases killed many. Without a steady trade offworld the planet soon began to run out of vital supplies of medicine, manufactured and luxury goods. Titus took the lead in developing a system which no longer looked to space for help, but to their own innovations. While the galaxy outside tore itself apart Pylos settled down to a long decline into isolation.

After four hundred years knowledge of space travel and of the stars had fallen away until the planet’s technology had regressed to just pre-space travel. Yet the planet had endured, and its population had grown to over seventy million, a rare increase in the galaxy over pre-viral populations. The planet was still run by an oligarchy, but the position of the Saelari family had become hereditary as ‘Consul’.
One fateful day, Carus Saelari, the Consul of the time, had the unexpected pleasure of receiving the first off-world visitors in centuries. Though suspicious, these people were Jedi Knights, still hailed in legend as defenders of the peace. They were on an outreach mission to rediscover worlds lost during the dark ages. They were pleasantly surprised to find a thriving population on Pylos, and reported that the virus had abated. Trade with local planets and technologies flooded into Pylos, causing something of a conservative reaction. In the ensuing strife Carus was assassinated, but his daughter Aurelia took command of the situation and restored order at the tender age of twenty. With the support of her family she left Pylos to be representative to the galaxy. In her absence, her uncle Marcian took over the position of Consul.

Arriving on Coruscant was a massive culture shock to Aurelia. Though rich and well educated for Pylos, she found herself overwhelmed by the massive city, which was still partly ruined in places. Nonetheless she set herself to the task of learning and understanding this new world. She returned to Pylos only once in the next nineteen years. She had no interest in returning home and leaving the technology and power she had in the galaxy.
Regardless, she likely would have remained only a minor player were it not for the fortuitous discovery that Pylos’ small moon Mystra was exceptionally rich in platinum. Immediately Aurelia seized on this and organised valuable mining contracts which diverted vast profits to many and Pylos, but especially to her and her family.
Using this windfall she set about buying, investing in the new galactic Republic which was beginning to form, and to gain influence with the great and powerful. Soon she had almost forgotten about Pylos and her years of obscurity and backwardness there.

Notable PC's: Aurelia Saelari, first Chancellor of the reformed Galactic Republic.

Intent: To create an approved entry for Aurelia’s homeworld. This planet will not be the subject of any RPs, but is basically here as background and explanation for her origins.
