<BEING CHISS: A NEW HOME — PROLOGUE>
Dokal was in the 117th Division’s headquarters, located on Ansion, in the middle of the New-Imperial territories. The local winter was cold, frozen, everything that she didn’t like at all. This reminded her of Naporar, her homeworld, the Nuruodo’s homeplanet, where she lost everything. Down to her family. Now, her planet was in the middle of a joust between the Alliance and the Maw. She did not like both. She did not like each faction that would be supposed to take Naporar instead of the Ascendancy. Those governments were each a side of the same piece: their frontiers were the same, and their desires too. Only the look of each one was really different. They were aiming the same goal: control. Control over worlds. Control over people. Control over Chiss and their space.
The Imperial were different. Dokal remembered her first encounter with Hukor, the Zabrak whose nickname was now Shorty, because he was little next to the Chiss. This was five years ago. Now, they were friends. Better than friends, they were brothers. Brothers in arms, brothers in blood, brothers against each obstacle on their road, brothers before all — before death. Then Jordi appeared in Dokal’s life. A Kandaran, well into his forties, but another friend for Dokal. He was the father she never had, her second father, after the Chiss’ one who died during Csilla’s incident. He taught Dokal how to become a COMPNOR’s agent. He worked alongside her for a couple of missions, and they became friends. Pulsar was the armed side of the duo, and Scimitar was the brained one. But she could negotiate, and he could be a well-skilled sniper. Dokal was proud of Jordi, just as Jordi was proud of Dokal.
Shorty entered the room and watched Dokal while he was leaning back against a wall. Dokal was observing the snow through the quarters’ transparisteel glass, probably thinking about all her existence as she was doing sometimes. This Chiss was very troubling: she was a faithful IMPSOC’s member, but she had something in her eyes… As if she did not want to stay in the NIO for the rest of her life. He knew her for five years, but she still had this indescriptible light in her gaze. Something brutal. Something she had to avenge.
“Do we have to go, Hukor?”
She calmly asked this question knowing full well that the Zabrak was now in the room for a couple of minutes. He cleared his throat, pretending to visit Dokal’s quarters that would become Task Force Nern’s ones.
“Well… Yes. RITES’ ship is now near to land on Vanto. We’ve to welcome her.
- I know.”
She took her helmet on the table in front of her and put it on his face. Her armor was now very different from the old one. She had given up the all-in-blue style for the white-and-camo one. Moreover, she wore a cape on her armor, to be more discreet during the operations. TF Nern’s job would be to support the Invincible Division during the operation led in Chiss Space. Dokal had personally asked IMPSOC to be moved to the 117th for this mission, and it was accepted. Then, she had been assigned to Joint Base Vanto, on Ansion, and she met the other troopers of the unit that she didn’t know before this day. She was here for a couple of weeks, anxiously waiting for her two new partners. Ensign Rites was the first. The second one was designated by the callsign “Rear” and would be her back-up sidekick.
“Then we go,” she finally said.
