PRODUCTION INFORMATION

SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Modular Filters: Pneuma uses a series of twin sequential, circular filter discs which can be easily inserted or removed from Pneuma’s spun-plast casing. This allows users to easily replace filters or adapt the device for different atmospheres, environments, or species. Most commonly, a variety of disposable particle-filtering extended filters are in place in order to trap toxins and pathogens from getting to the user before a final sequence of algae filter discs directly exchanges the user’s waste gases for more oxygen. However, specialty filters for special environments can be fitted in here too. As example of these, gill filters containing a symbiote based on those found in the organic gill effectively allowsthe user to breath underwater for a limited amount of time. In all cases, the result is that the breathing medium is filtered for toxic substances or otherwise dangerous elements before it reaches the user.
  • Extended Air Supply: The use of algae filters at the end of the filtering sequence means that much of a user’s expirated waste gases can almost immediately be converted into useable oxygen from the start. A small, tubular gas tank is integrated into the spun-plast frame with mass nulling technology to provide the user with about an hour’s worth of air. The back of this cylinder though can accept gas tubing, allowing larger gas tanks to be attached to the device, though they obviously will be bulkier and not integral to the Pneuma’s minimalistic frame.
  • Multiple Ingresses / Outgresses: Pneuma exchanges air through multiple, almost microscopic ingresses built into the perimeter of the faceplate pane’s frame before it is drawn through the modular filters. Similarly, after going through the filtering process, air filters into the sealed face area by outgresses built into the frame that run almost parallel to the ingresses. This arrangement means that is very difficult for the entire system to be occluded (like by an adversary’s hand) or entirely clogged up by an environment. It also allows the user to breath more naturally and with less potential for claustrophobia than many existing breath masks and rebreathing systems currently on the market.
  • On & Off valves: Pneuma exchanges gases from the outside through multiple ingresses on its frame, but all diffusion occurs through two separate filtering channels. At each channel is an adjustable valve, which can allow bi-directional exchange, positive pressure expiratory exchange, or completely closed. These valve settings can be easily set by pushing or pulling a simple mechanical button in front of the filtering channels. These valves can be rigged to be electrically controlled in personal armors, allowing sensors and computer systems to automatically select the right valve setting depending on environmental stimuli. This allows Pneuma to be worn and only activated as needed, allowing the user to conserve filters and allow rapid reaction in ever changing environments.
  • Comlink Mount: Pneuma has a comlink mount on the lower part of the frame, allowing users to attach small comlinks like the ubiquitous C1 personal comlink or LPD's own SC-1 Hardened Comlink, which allows individuals to communicate effortlessly despite the face plate.
STRENGTHS

  • Comprehensive Atmospheric Support: Pneuma provides both filtering and feeding air supply to the user, ensuring that the user can safely breathe in a wide variety of environments and situations.
WEAKNESSES

  • Time-limited: While using a replaceable filters and a miniaturized gas tank has kept cost and weight down, it also means that Pneuma is only effective for several hours at most before the filters need to be replaced and/or the air tank needs to be refilled.
DESCRIPTION
Pneuma is a next generation, full face breath mask designed to provide travelers, explorers, and soldiers with a means of being able to safely breathe in hostile environments. Pneuma largely uses already technologies found in other existing breath masks and related technologies, but notably incorporates several small features unique to itself.

Perhaps the least obvious of these is using a network of air exchange tubes which open across almost the entire surface of the spun-plast / desh composite frame, which provides redundancy to prevent the mask from easily be occluded or clogged, as well as in minimizing its external bulk. A similar network of tubing opens around the inside of the mask as well, which promotes more natural and comfortable breathing, rather than having high flow oxygen blowing straight into a nostril.

Its other primary innovation is the ability to swap out different kinds of filters within the same mask, allowing it to be tailored for different users and environments. A user intent on using this to provide oxygen underwater while diving in a coral reef can replace some of the typical extended filter discs with more gill filters to provide consistent oxygen for several hours whereas a medical response team responding to a local pandemic may replace some of the algae filters with more extended filters to ensure that they are not exposed to the aerial strains of a pathogen. Similarly, explorers may tailor the Pneuma to provide them the safest performance while scouting unknown worlds and soldiers may pick out filters based on their mission’s needs.

While not a truly ground-breaking device, Pneuma stands out from much of the existing competition due to its modular nature and convenient, compact design. While mostly sold to adventurers, it is also commonly found as a piece of equipment in survival packs and escape pods. Lucerne Personal Defense is also planning on incorporating the device into future battle armors, providing future fighters and soldiers with the ability to fight in hostile environments and despite poisonous gases. These uses mean that it is likely that Pneuma will enjoy a steady and reasonably large production figures for some time.
