Intent: A form of exotic ammunition, optimized for boarding operations.
Development Thread: I Want You To Hit Me As Hard As You Can
Manufacturer: Clan Rekali
Model: Plas-Bonded Ostrine, Larraq (PBOL) Ammunition
Affiliation: Clan Rekali, select customers
Modularity: Available in various personal and artillery-grade calibres.
Production: Minor
Material: Standard shell casing for the weapon/emplacement in question, filled with micronized, plas-bonded ostrine.
Classification: Ammunition
Size: Available in virtually any size; all it requires is an empty shell and a certain amount of plas-bonded ostrine dust.
Length: Varies by calibre.
Weight: Varies by calibre.
Ammunition Type: Scattershot full of dust.
Ammunition Capacity: N/A
Effective Range: For most handheld/personal weapons, less than 30m. Highly vulnerable to air resistance and in general not recommended for use in an atmosphere (comparable to a somewhat less effective CryoBan). Utterly worthless for most artillery purposes. If in vacuum, spreads out relatively quickly, creating diffuse but fast-moving clouds at turbolaser range.
Rate of Fire: N/A
Special Features:
  • Offers very little in the way of kinetic damage and has virtually zero armour-piercing ability. At most ranges, physical damage is equivalent to a sandblasting machine, capable of scouring off skin but little else. At point-blank range, could be lethal against an unarmoured target.
  • Particles cause a significant temperature drop upon impact. Effect is comparable to CryoBan.
Description: PBOL ammunition sprays a target area with plas-bonded ostrine dust. Ostrine absorbs heat proportional to the kinetic energy of contact. The target area experiences CryoBan-like freezing effects, in or out of atmosphere. While CryoBan freezes an area, PBOL freezes only surfaces and objects which are struck directly with considerable velocity. This allows for a much more precise application than CryoBan generally allows. Boarding crews can fire PBOL at heated metal to induce rapid cooling, stress fractures, etc., or to help melted edges cool more quickly for safety purposes. PBOL is fully effective in vacuum. A surface supercooled by PBOL ammunition re-warms somewhat more slowly than a surface supercooled by CryoBan. Very large PBOL shells or charges could theoretically be used to cool lava flows or reduce ambient temperatures. PBOL tank ammunition might also be used to freeze portions of large Yuuzhan Vong biots, whose protective dovin basals are poorly suited to handling a wide spread of high-velocity particles (as seen with stutterfire-equipped cannons, etc.).

Note that PBOL is much less suited to most AOE applications than CryoBan, and is somewhat more expensive. You can't drop a PBOL charge in a room and turn everyone to ice the way you can with CryoBan.
Primary Source: CryoBan, Ostrine

[member="Ordo"] - by the mercy of my schedule changing, I happened to do the dev today. By the mercy of RPJ, the archiving is undone. At the mercy of Ordo, the dev thread is complete and linked in the sub.
