  • Origins: Pamarthe
  • Average Lifespan: 40 Years

  • Description: The Pamarthen Salt Hound was a large dog-like mammal native to Pamarthe. Domesticated over the centuries, the Salt Hound was used for a variety of tasks on Pamarthen homesteads and port towns including retrieving, livestock herding, guard duty, search and rescue, pest control, and small game hunting. It was a common sight on the planet, due to its versatility and became popular with Corellians due to the shared tradition of sailing and flying with the Pamarthens. Its large ears made it invaluable in alerting farmers and sailors of danger from the Pamarthen Lion and eary historical paintings indicate that the larger cousin of the Salt Hound was once used in fact to hunt the beasts. They are a sign of natural pride to the proud people of Pamarthe.

  • Distinctions: Pamarthen Salt Hounds had thin but powerful limbs that connected to a stocky, hardy body. A thick neck supported a very round head which sported two large bat-like ears, wide-set forward-facing eyes, and most curiously two nasal cavities near the brow which was used to expel salt after extended periods of diving. Its whip-like tail could wag insanely fast, offering it a secondary means of propulsion in the water alongside its slightly webbed paws. They didn't have retractable claws. Their large head and innocent looking "smile" face hid four rows of jagged sharp teeth. The first two rows were serrated, like a shark's, while the second two, retractable and positioned closer to the throat, were tall and cusped and oriented like a circular grinder. These teeth were for breaking apart hard crustacean shells and other minerals the Salt Hound ingested for gut health. Despite their apparent size, they hold vast reserves of fat beneath their skin keeping them warm even in the winter storms of Pamarthe.

  • General behavior: In the wild, feral Salt Hounds form Colonies which can include up to two hundred individuals, often taking over entire islands along the more unsettled areas of Pamarthe's ocean. In captivity where they generally are seen, they still do form Colonies, but on a much smaller scale; usually 2 to 10 individuals. They love to swim and run and can be very destructive if not given a job. During the stormy season, it is common to hear Salt Hounds howling constantly due to their ability to track storms internally. They howl when a storm is approaching to warn their colony to take shelter. They are a domestic breed and so they deal with people very well generally but can be aggressive, especially the Corellian Salt Hounds.
HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Bred from an unknown ancestor by the first settlers of Pamarthe, the Salt Hound has been an important part of Pamarthen culture since its inception. Used in everything from hunting to search and rescue, the Pamarthen Salt Hound is tireless when it comes to working. Due to its need of seafood in its diet the breed didn't really take off anywhere else as there were much better-suited animals for aquatic worlds, typically native ones and so the breed remained a hidden gem of Pamarthe until a Corellian Green Jedi by the name of Kenneth Darner took a liking to the breed and thought it would do well in Corellian port towns and cities where good dock dogs were hard to come by. They had of course the Corellian Hound but they were brutish things and so they often had to purchase off-world animals like Tortuga Hounds or Kath Hounds for the dual purpose work. However, when he found that breeding the Corellian Hound with the Salt Hound produced breedable offspring the aging Jedi explorer began breeding the Corellian Salt Hound which took to Corellia's fast-paced and urban setting much better than the standard Salt Hound. Now the breed is seen across both worlds with some even breaching the market now in other systems.
