WEAKNESSES:
  • Saline eye drops are needed to prevent dryness or irritation, and if the eyes become too dry for too long, more serious medical treatment may be required.
  • Upon completion of surgical enhancement, the user’s eyes are entirely replaced and cannot be restored using any other device, such as other cybernetic eyes. If removed, damaged, or destroyed, the user is left totally blinded until and only if another replacement set of the components can be attained and implanted.
  • When using night-vision or low-light vision functions, the extreme light filter is disabled and the auto-tinting feature of the lenses is suspended, meaning that vulnerability to flash-bangs or similar effects is doubled and could possibly temporarily blind the user and / or result in severe headaches, disorientation, etc.
  • While highly resistant to EMP/Ion effects, the system is not immune and repeated, prolonged, or extreme exposure to them could result in disabling all or portions of the implants, possibly enough to require medical treatment before full functionality can be returned.

Species such as the Aing-Ti, Hutts, and others simply cannot receive this enhancement.
  • Detection by casual observers and even those using hand-held and general sensor units is not possible, however larger, more powerful military-and-medical grade scanners (such as MRIs, CAT Scans, or military Cyber Detection units specifically-tuned for tell-tale traces of cybernetics) can and will easily detect them. Thus, while it's possible to fool a doorman at a nightclub, or the lackey of some crime lord, bypassing heavy security checkpoints and pass-through sensors is much harder and far more likely to result in failure.
  • Biochemical regulation can cause users to appear less animated or emotional to others, never appearing to be fazed by outside stimuli and responding to situations where others might express sadness, fear, anxiety, anger, distraction, hysteria, etc. they often appear calm, composed, and focused. They do - in fact - feel these emotions, but manage them differently because of the device, and their outward expressions and conduct reflects this. In turn, this can cause users to be socially considered as 'cold', 'stiff', or insensitive and result in some social stigma or discomfort in others towards them.
DESCRIPTION:
Owls, often regarded as symbols of excellent eyesight and hearing, wisdom, and an almost supernatural awareness, lend their name and its connotations to this enhancement. This enhancement package offers those who receive it a broad range of advantages, namely in terms of improving audio/visual sensory performance, cognition, and memory.

The cybernetic eyes, replacing the candidate’s organic ones, are specially-constructed to look and operate just as previous eyes, and users can even select and change eye color at will – a feature which helps for undercover work and general disguise purposes. Casual observers and even general low-grade scanners will not detect the augmentations used by the Owl, however scans by larger military and medical-grade sensors will detect them quickly and without difficulty. The solarium glasteel cornea are designed to provide auto-tinting effects, polarized to self-adjust for bright light conditions, block UV rays, and prevent blinding, as by extreme sunlight, welding torches, or similar exposures. An extreme light filter is also used, which except in cases of prolonged, repeated, or extreme exposure can protect the user from temporary blindness. However, these features are not available when using lowlight or night-vision modes, and users must be aware of this and compensate to avoid serious damage to themselves or the units. Offering multi-spectrum vision enhancements, such as lowlight, night-vision, thermal, infrared, emissions-radiation, and similar abilities, as well as allowing telescopic vision to enable a user to read very fine print from across a room or – when combined with built-in rangefinder capabilities – to survey across a large distance and zoom in and out at will, the visual augmentation is a key notable feature found in the Owl. However, similar enhancements are common to cybernetic eyes now available on the galactic marketplace.

Retinal tracker technology is applied, which enables users to track targets, and to assist in targeting using a tiny targeting computer included in the enhancement, making it possible – though not infallible – to vastly improve marksmanship, increasing accuracy on precision shots or against multiple targets. Additionally, the visual acuity enhancement allows users to detect and become much more aware of subtle nuance and body language in others, i.e. detecting changes to stance, nervous twitches, shallow breathing, etc. With practice, users can learn to use this information to yield tremendous advantages, such as predicting an attack, detecting anxiety, or even to know when someone is lying to them.

Using true-fleck brain implants and artificial hypergleamum glands, the brain’s ability to handle additional sensory input is increased as is the ability to organize and process this information more quickly and accurately, enabling the user to receive elevated sensory awareness and management in terms of audio and visual data. Intelligence augmentation and memory enhancement is used, reinforcing and stimulating the brain’s cognitive and memory centers. Cognitive functions like spatial reasoning, critical thinking, logic, and memory are elevated and improved, increasing problem-solving, reasoning, and efficiency of thought. Recipients of the Owl usually display a 22.86-34.19% increase to cognitive speeds, with as much as 40.49% increased accuracy rates, which can elevate already intelligent users to near-genius or genius level ability. Furthermore, since the entire system is wireless, data received through audio and visual input can be safely stored within the included cortical datasplint, allowing for instant and total recall as well as enabling, via wireless transmission along short-range encrypted transmissions, for the information to be relayed through a communications system to an outside destination, such as a person or database. In effect, a person can allow another to see and hear exactly what they do, or to upload that information for analysis and playback later. Of course, this does – despite encryption and protection safeguards – leave users open to being sliced, given that the slicer has the time, equipment, and skill necessary to compromise these transmissions. Like most standard cortical datasplints, information stored within is otherwise incredibly safe, and special encryption and trauma sensors are used which help users to protect data here even under torture or duress. A user can effectively store information, ‘forget it’, and retrieve again at any time without the aid of a computer. Thus with practice, a person can even learn to block Force scans and hypnotic suggestion, mind tricks, and other mentalist abilities, ensuring that stored data remains secure.

The Owl also enhances auditory ability, enabling users to hear with much improved acuity and even greater distances, detecting faint noises, hear sounds generated from much further away than normally possible, and even being able to eavesdrop on hushed conversations across crowded rooms relatively easily. However, this carries certain risks, and measures of hearing protection, noise cancellation and filtration are needed to prevent serious overload or damage to the auditory organics in most circumstances. Many users choose to use discreet earplugs or similar devices, appearing actually as ‘hearing aids’ when in fact they are hearing protection, to compensate for this.

Lastly, the Owl uses a biochemical regulatory implant, which serves to manage and stabilize the user’s biochemical productions, such as adrenalin management, stress hormones, etc. Designed to help war veterans manage post-war trauma and physio-psychological stress disorders, these systems allow users to maintain well-regulated demeanors, avoid radical depression or manic episodes, improve sleep, etc. Users do not become agitated, overly emotional, distracted, etc. This does however make the user appear, at least to some, to be ‘emotionless’ or ‘stiff’, and may facilitate feelings of uncomfortability or inability to relate with users using this device. Users do not sacrifice their personality, but do report that they find that their ‘highs’ and ‘lows’ are not as extreme as before this component’s use, and that the outward manifestation of emotions is inhibited by its presence. Therefore, in high-stress situations, where others would behave normally – showing signs of agitation, anger, fear, or tension – users of the Owl tend to be more subdued, appearing calm, composed, even stoic and focused.

The Owl offers users serious and notable advantages, however, the effects of receiving this system – which cannot be reversed – bring to them a new set of limitations, concerns, and results which must be navigated and understood. The decision to receive the Owl is not one to be made lightly, but for special operations forces, pilots, undercover agents, and others, the benefits can often far outweigh the costs.
