Mission Outbound Flight: The Jaws of Defeat

Tatiana stopped at the sound of armed guards as they rushed down an adjoining hall. The saber at her side was drawn in one hand. "Please wait a moment," was all the silvery woman said before the blue beam ignited. Without further ado, she darted forward. The Ssi'ruuk had only a split second to notice one of the intruders with signals racing down their neurons to the claws that gripped their weapons to prepare for battle. And in the time it took for them to draw their weapons halfway, Tatiana was already spinning as she continued moving forward. The length of her blade swept across the width of the corridor with the searing, burning, scouring hiss as it pass through their thick hides.

Klaxons sounded in the facility, which caused Tatiana's faceplate to tilt up at the red lighting. "Discretion is no longer appropriate. We cut our way through to the holding cells." With that declaration made, she began to move down the corridor without another look at the hacked apart bodies left in her wake.

"Tatiana to Aurek. Status?" Her saber whirred around in time to knock a blaster bolt aside as they came across another security force. Each swing had a purpose. Every step a goal. They could send out the entirety of their species in these corridors and Tatiana would cut them down as cordwood. Dominic was all that matter, and the moment she found out he wasn't in this facility... well, it would be a day for the lizards to remember.

The world returned to Bastila in pieces of bright light. First it was the hard and cold feeling of the metal beneath her. Then came the sharp tang taste of blood behind her teeth. The nauseating pain burning through the fingers still wrapped around her lightsaber. Then the sound Sophelia started making as the attacker began to choke her.

Bastila forced her eyes open and through the pain and stars stared out beyond the airlock, clad in black a woman stood bareheaded and furious, one hand extended towards the blonde with alien gunk in her hair. Whatever had transpired moments before was lost to her, but the distraction had saved Bastila from being sealed inside.

Bastila planted one boot against the bulwark and dragged herself upright. Her injured hand refused to close properly around the hilt, shards of glass now noticeably stuck in and out the other side from where she had hit the wall, it forced her to pass the weapon into the other. Violet light returned with a snap-hiss, flooding the chamber.

She gave no warning nor any clever remark. She instead just threw it.

The lightsaber spun out from the airlock, cutting a violet circle through the dark as Bastila guided it towards the black clad outstretched arm. She wasn’t seeking her weapon, instead fully intending to sever the hand strangling Sophelia.

Bastila followed behind it, throwing herself through the threshold before there could be any control of the airlock. Her damaged hand curled against her chest as the other reached out, calling the blade back towards her.

Pain cleared what remained of the fog in her thoughts, it gave her focus where she knew there should be none. This wasn’t a duel in the temple. Here there would be no measured exchange, no Master waiting to correct her stance when it was over instead there would only be whichever of them remained standing.

"You should have killed me first." She struggled through blooded teeth.

Soph stared. Dumbfounded for a moment at the face revealed beneath the sith’s helm. Had she seen it around the Sanctuary before? In one of the archives? Eyes bulged as the invisible force clamped around her throat.

Oooo that hurt.

Heart fluttered in her chest like a panicked bird.

Head swam and pounded. Her own fingers grasped at nothing as she remained frozen and rooted to the spot. Lips started turning blue. She reached for the light. Force light. It flickered and sputtered on her skin. A dimming glow that tried to spark a flash.

And as the dark curtains closed on her vision, she saw the flash of a purple saber.

Bastila.

The girl with the priceless hair advice.

That iron grip on her throat released and she fell to the laboratory floor. Oxygen never tasted so good. Even as it felt like fire through her damaged airway. Breath.

Breath.

She commanded herself even as her lids grew heavy. Fingers fumbling for her comm as it chirped at her side. She couldnt talk but maybe she could send an SOS to Tatiana Sah Tatiana Sah

Even as Tatiana stalked the corridors of the facility, the Force did not 'rage' nor 'broil' about her. Her disturbance in the Force as she moved through space and time remain the same as the moment they'd docked to the present. There was, however, an urgency to her step. Wherever Dominic was he needed them. Her efforts to excise the threat were purely clinical; the upright lizards were mere obstacles to what truly mattered.

There were no words wasted in an effort to convince the Ssi'ruuk to hand Dominic over either. No point wasting energy. They'd had their chance back on the ships they'd assaulted. Before they took a hostage. A Jedi Master might speak of forgiveness and of a changed heart or a changed mind. Tatiana understood these concepts. Understood the philosophical angle they would argue. And she disagreed this was a circumstance in which it would apply. Even if a single person had changed their mind -- unbidden except perhaps by Dominic's word alone -- there were countless others that had not. Would not. And, again, they had the opportunity to do so... to return him swiftly, proactively, to the people they'd taken him from.

And, again, they had made their decision.

Tatiana's forgiveness -- her mercy -- would be in delivering each of them a swift end of line. Perhaps the next generation would learn not to carelessly engage Republic forces with hostility, and to consider opening channels of communication to avoid what was bound to follow -- and what had already passed.

The silvery figure stopped abruptly when a series of sounds came across the channel instead of a vocalized response. Interference? No. Enemy interception? No. Nine pulses. Three short, three long, three short. A series of research calls were made in the blink of an eye before Tatiana pivoted on the spot.

"Forgive," she said before her arm went about Kaia's midsection and the two sailed down a corridor. There hadn't been time to properly explain, but Tatiana couldn't leave Kaia on her own back there, or wait for her to keep up after even a moment spent trying to process Tatiana's sudden turn in strategy.

The lights began to fail ahead of them.

It was not the violent collapse of a damaged system, nor the irregular flicker of power being bled elsewhere. They extinguished themselves one after another with a slow and dreadful purpose, each section of the corridor surrendering to darkness only when the last had been allowed to settle. Whatever waited beyond the failing light was not merely concealed by it, it seemed to be bringing the darkness with it.

The blast door behind the Jedi descended with a grinding finality, cutting them away from the route they had taken and leaving only the long, narrowing corridor ahead. The distant sounds of the facility became muted things beyond the walls; the report of weapons, the cries of dying Ssi-ruuk and the faint violence of the struggle surrounding Bastila and Sophelia. Their distress signal had reached those it had been intended for.

It had reached something else as well.

A sound emerged from the blackness. A single breath, drawn slowly through machinery that could no longer disguise how broken the thing beneath it had become. Static whispered across the corridor with every exhalation, joined by fragments of something almost vocal, as if the helmet were struggling to contain several voices speaking through the same ruined throat.

The air seemed to grow heavier with it and as if pushed out of that darkened, heavy air Malleus stepped into the last remaining pool of light.

Black armour swallowed what little illumination remained, revealing his shape only in fragments, noticeable where the dim light of the darkness caught the edge of a shoulder, the ridges of a fractured helmet and one gauntleted hand curled around the hilt of a lightsaber. What would have been instantly noticeable was that he did not carry the anger of the Sith he seemed to be. There was almost no heat to him at all. In fact it felt like there was nothing in him, only an absence vast enough to make the corridor feel smaller, as though the Force itself had withdrawn from the space around his body and left something dead in its place.

He had watched the Jedi change direction, feeling out through the darkness to grab hold of the urgency that pulled them towards their companions and the certainty with which they answered it. Such bonds made Jedi predictable. They dressed attachment in nobler language, called it duty, called it compassion, but when one of them cried out the others always came.

They would realise it soon. It had all been a trap.

The red blade ignited without warning, its light spreading across the corridor and finding the blackened grooves carved into Malleus’ armour. For the briefest moment it illuminated the wall behind him, where the bodies of several Ssi-ruuk had been pressed into the metal with enough force to break them into unnatural shapes. Their blood moved slowly down the surface, almost black beneath the crimson glow.

His helmet turned towards Tatiana and Malleus lowered the blade until its tip touched the floor. Metal began to glow beneath it, then split as he dragged the weapon behind him and walked forward with the unhurried certainty of something that knew there was nowhere left to run.

“They are calling for you.” The voice arrived fractured, the words overlapping themselves through the damaged modulator almost foreboding as the final light above the Jedi flickered once. In that brief failure Malleus seemed to vanish, leaving only the red blade suspended within the dark.

When the light returned, he was closer. His head tilted by a fraction, the gesture carrying something worse than amusement.

“...and here you are.”

Violet light sliced through the dark. Indra registered the hum just before the heat reached her skin and snapped her arm back.

The spinning weapon missed her wrist by an inch, biting into the metal wall behind her. The hilt slammed against the bulkhead and the blade shorted out.

Indra immediately pulled the weapon back into her palm with the Force. The crimson light snapped back to life.

Bastila spat blood, her voice tight. "You should have killed me first."

"You shouldn't have made it easier," Indra replied.

She lunged forward, raising her saberstaff to cut Bastila down. Then, the facility shuddered.

The charges planted by the other Jedi team detonated below. The shockwave ripped through the room, buckling the floor plates. Caught mid-stride, Indra lost her footing and crashed into the metal debris.

Tatiana released Kaia at a slower pace so she could find her legs, but didn't stop immediately. Keeping her distance from the one with the red saber hadn't been a priority. There was still plenty of room left between them. Yet, despite the distance and Malleus' silver opponent, there was no red glare reflected in the faceplate of the woman he'd interrupted.

"I have wished to meet a 'Sith,'" Tatiana replied calmly as the man taunted her. "To discuss your philosophical view. Now, however, is not the time. You bar me from my path. You keep me from what matters." She drew the cylinder at her own side and ignited an opposing emerald blade. "You will find me a difficult opponent." Certainly not one bound by gravity's pull with her feet still two inches off the deck plating.

What happened to those Ssi-ruuk might be his fate if he pressed her. If Tatiana for a moment thought he stood between her and Dominic there weren't enough bulkheads in the facility to draw upon. As things were, she was simply committed to reaching her companions and freeing them of this place before it was torn to pieces. How many others would need to be excised before she could see Dominic returned home?

As if in answer to her query, the entire facility shook. Tatiana was not cast about as she was still in the air. In that moment, she bolted ahead in an effort to slip by the man and toward her companions to help them get free. And if he thought to dawdle rather than follow, Tatiana would use the Force to yank him along after her to keep him from Kaia.

She did not like this place. There were Ssi-Ruuk around? Not something she wanted to deal with. And what did the politician know? Heavy state secrets? Access codes? Codes could be changed, and safeguarded against. She had the drive of her father to be the hero, but honestly? Kaia was an explorer, a pilot, and finding the hidden worlds between worlds. But still, she was here, and she should either make sure the politician couldn’t speak secrets, or get them out of here.

And everyone jumped in to being big damned heroes. Probably for the best. She was flying getaway, sure, but she also had to be here in support. And Drifter was giving her the locations for mines to be set.

And okay, maybe with Bastila and Tatiana they’d be fine. She had her saber, not drawn, she was on a station, and that meant a lot could go wrong. She’d hold… until that. The klaxons said more was going on. Tossing the bag to Drifter, she nodded. “Understood.” Her own blade, yellow-turning-to-blue, a perk of performing sunshard on her own years ago, in the Unknown Regions gave it a unique color scheme. Part her father, part her, ignited.

“Drifter, places the charges, and get to the ship. But you’re not taking off until we’re all back.” She ordered the droid as she followed behind Tatiana. And being moved in such a fashion? That was also a whirlwind. Her droid would be fine. Her eyes on Tat… she nodded, seeing the red blade.

“You got this? I can get the path back to the ship ready.” She said, deflecting any stray bolts that came her way, and just hoping.
