  • Tricky: The Serpentine requires focus and concentration to use, and can be difficult to put to best use under duress.
  • Dangerous: The Serpentine poses some operational risk to the user, at least under certain circumstances.
DESCRIPTION

A component of Helix's upcoming battle armor (among others), the Serpentine serves to seamlessly blend man and machine together.

The implant itself is simply a small metal port in the user's forearm, which uplinks to their motor nervous system. This allows them to interface with certain pieces of Helix technology and control them as though they were part of the user's own body. The implant's shiftsteel and helglass construction ensure it is unobtrusive, and it will usually mimic the user's complexion so as to not be immediately obvious, appearing to most eyes as a subtle bump along the lower forearm.

Compatible technologies will usually feature a small cable somewhere on their person, which a Serpentine-augmented person may utilize by simply plugging the device into their own body.

This sidesteps lengthy training requirements, alleviates the need for complex user interfaces, and makes compatible devices much more difficult to use for unauthorized persons. Permissions and clearance can be easily checked at a glance, and those without clearance to use an item will generally simply find it inoperable.

What's more, Serpentine-compatible systems are robustly resistant to attempts at remote intrusion, as they are fully air-gapped, lacking in traditionally-interactive code or outward/network interfaces. As such, any unauthorized party wishing to utilize such systems must steal and implant a Serpentine port themselves.

This is often easier said than done, as the implant is designed to self-destruct when it detects any attempt to surgically remove or tamper with it. This self-destruct sequence is spread across multiple redundant parts of the implant, making it exceptionally difficult (though of course, not impossible) to bypass by any means. Only a scant handful of Helix personnel know the means to safely removed a Serpentine implant without harming the device or the implantee.

Though created in great numbers, these implants are nonetheless only handed out to a select few persons, as the company rarely trusts organic employees with their use. Nonetheless, most authorized persons viewed the implants favorably when polled, as they are small, visually unobtrusive, and generally comfortable to use. However, it requires a somewhat focused, disciplined mind to utilize this device to best effect, and untrained users might find the experience disorienting.

Finally, like any machine, the Serpentine system poses some risks to incautious users, and the limitations of the human body must be kept in mind when ordering a machine to act. For example, attempting to manipulate a suit of armor's limbs to move in a way that its wearer's cannot, promises the sort of grisly industrial accident that nightmares are made of.
