Special Features:
· Shoulder Mounted: The OS-111 Blaster Cannon is designed to be mounted on an operator’s shoulder. It can be fitted either to the OS-103 Whisper Class Light Armor, or it can be fitted to specially fitted body harness that comes free with the unit. Because the weapon is shoulder mounted, it keeps the operator’s hands free which allows them to either fire additional weaponry, operate a personal shield or perform any number of other tasks while the weapon is in operation.

· Retractable: When the weapon is not in use, it can be retracted into a backpack sized position on the operator’s back. This makes the weapon easier to carry over long distances and keeps it out of the operator’s hands allowing them to hold additional weaponry or perform any number of other tasks.

· HUD Targeting: When activated, the weapon makes a wireless connection to either the operator’s OS-103 Helmet HUD or their OS-106 “Oracle” Portable HUD device. Once connected, the operator can use the HUD interface to give the weapon rudimentary firing instructions. The user can set duration of fire and target without having to aim manually. Once the instructions are set, the weapon will continue to fire as assigned until either runs out of power, or is deactivated. In the case that the weapon’s connection to its parent HUD device is severed, for any reason, the weapon will automatically power down and retract. The duration of fire settings are as follows:
o Continuous: The weapon will continue to fire on assigned target/targets until ordered to stop or until it runs out of power.
o 20 Round burst: The weapon will fire twenty rounds on the assigned target/targets
o 50 Round burst: The weapon will fire fifty rounds on the assigned target/targets
o 100 Round burst: The weapon will fire one-hundred rounds on the assigned target/targets

· 180 Degree Firing Arc: The weapon can swivel and fire on a 180 degree arc in the direction that the operator is facing. It cannot fire behind the operator.

Strengths:

· Shoulder Mounted: Because the weapon is shoulder mounted, the operator’s hands are kept free to utilize additional weaponry or perform other tasks while the weapon is firing.
· HUD Targeting: The weapon uses an HUD program to target and fire, and as such can fire without the operator having to manually aim the weapon.
· Multiple Targets and Wide Firing Arc: The weapon is capable of firing on various assigned targets in a wide (180 degree) firing arc in front of the operator.

Weaknesses:

· Heavy and Awkward: The OS-111 is a heavy piece of equipment and somewhat awkward to wear. While objectively easier than carrying a handheld weapon of similar size and weight, it still has the ability to throw it’s operator off balance when extending or retracting. In addition, when the weapon is firing, the recoil can make it difficult for the operator to concentrate on other tasks or fire additional weaponry. It should be noted that a high number of test subjects who used this weapon without the benefit of power armor, or being from a large and/or heavy species, have experienced moderate to severe injuries resulting from the high level of recoil this weapon creates when firing.
· No Manual Targeting: The weapon cannot be used except with designated Obsidian Star HUD devices. It cannot be aimed or fired manually under any circumstance. The weapon will not extend without being connected to an HUD device, and if the connection is severed for any reason it will automatically retract and power down.
· Highly Susceptible to Electronic Interference/Jamming/Ion/EMP: The weapon is operated using a wireless connection to its parent HUD device. Due to this nature, that connect is only lightly encrypted and can be disabled using a variety of electronic jamming equipment. In addition, the transmitting and receiving components in the OS-111 is highly susceptible to Ion and EMP weaponry-both of which will leave the device inoperable.
Description:
The OS-111 “Firestorm” Shoulder Mounted Heavy Blaster Cannon is Obsidian Star’s first foray into heavy weapons. Designed to act as a high capacity, high rate of fire, high powered blaster weapon, it boasts a unique design in that it is mounted on the operator’s shoulder. The weapon is fired using one of Obsidian Star’s patented HUD devices: either that housed with the OS-103 Helmet or the OS-106 “Oracle” Portable HUD device. Because the weapon is shoulder-mounted, it leaves the operator free to wield additional weaponry or perform other tasks while the weapon is in operation.

How exactly would someone fire this weapon, especially in continuous fire, without injuring themselves due to recoil and where it is positioned?

I suppose in my head, I figured that the high rating of recoil (instead of very high or extreme ratings) would just make the weapon more awkward than injurious to the user. The operator would likely have to brace themselves a certain way to fire-perhaps making it very difficult to walk while firing? And I suppose prolonged or frequent use could and would lead to back/shoulder problems, though I don't know (I'm not a chiropractor) that the force generated by it's positioning on the body would be overall much different than it would be if the weapon was a traditional rifle with a stock.

The force from firing a rifle is mitigated by the rifle itself not being mounted on someone's shoulder. You're putting a lot of mass on someone's back/shoulder by mounting it, and then firing it with a high recoil. Whereas you'd be holding a rifle with your hands, mitigating recoil along everything from your hands to your back, this is just a cannon attached your shoulder that is firing remotely without anything to keep its recoil from flinging it backwards aside from the portion attached directly to the user's shoulder.

Add to the weaknesses that using this may cause injury to the user if they aren't using something like power armor or belong to a physically strong species.
