Orientation (Wyyrlok-Solusar) (Open)

Valik

Professor of Alchemy
Arkania had graciously allowed Wyyrlok-Solusar to hold an event there, called "The Orientation". It was an opportunity for new and potential students to meet their professors, many of the different department staff to meet one another, and potential employers were also invited to send an envoy to scout for talent and discover what the college was all about. As long as they didn't cause any trouble of course, the Arkanians and the college faculty had taken appropriate precautions. A Jedi Master or Sith Lord looking for talent was more than welcome, a strike team or warship was not. In any case the event had food and drinks. Several of the professors had set up booths displaying their research and classes they taught. There was another booth taking blood samples, in order to confirm Force sensitivity and help students enroll. Another one was staffed by a Muun who had a talent for fundraising, helping students find the means to enroll.

Mur ran a small booth that advertised the undergraduate and postgraduate classes he'd be teaching on Sith Alchemy, as well his current research project into combining Dathomiri Conjuration techniques with Sith Alchemical reinforcement. There was also a sign offering to "Alchemize Your Sword On The Spot!", which had already attracted a few people's attention, Simon performing a few demonstrations in the last hour. Simon drank from a small bottle of water as he looked on towards the crowds.

Hopefully nothing too exciting would happen.

To boldly alchemize what no one alchemized before
Janick was perhaps known for a number of things in the alchemical arena, especially as it pertained to alchemized electronics, with her crowning achievements being the Utai Mental Modem, allowing Force-users to upload and download knowledge from the HoloNet to their brains, and the Utai Media Player, which would allow sentients to replay memories with near-perfect fidelity in their minds. She ran a booth about mental data transfer (Memory Rub, Drain Knowledge), presenting them as teachign and learning aids respectively. Also, next to her booth, she put up a sign offering "Fresh infusions of knowledge" whereby people who wanted knowledge infused would get their infusions of knowledge through her performing Memory Rub on them. Unsurprisingly, the people who took her up on the infusion of knowledge would be people that tended to fall into two categories: the prospective students that struggled with one subject matter area and were marginal students in that subject, or the grade grubbers who saw in this an opportunity to take a Force-powered shortcut. And, if they were Force-users, they instead took the opportunity to drain that knowledge out of her; she never felt her mental bandwidth to be stretched in that many directions before. Because, whereas she could infuse only one data packet at a time (even though she could infuse it into many different people, each extra person requiring an extra dose of energy), she had to share her mental bandwidth with multiple Drain Knowledge users for different purposes, so her headaches began to amplify. And also her Force-energy reserves were being drained pretty quickly. Would [member="Simon Mur"] even realize what she was doing, she did not know: she was so absorbed in her infusions.

Richard was not involved in the college he wasn't a teacher or a student just one who was there for fun, he wasn't sure if it was allowed for nonmembers to be there but he went anyway they would stop him if it was private, Richard created his own branch of Sith magic and others making RVord which was the only magic he practiced but he was an intelligent man he made an effort to understand all magic he could to mix and match with RVord to create more abilities so he walked around looking and watching what each teacher presented. He looked at [member="Simon Mur"] for a second but Richard was already familiar with Sith Alchemy still he would just watch him recover any knowledge he was prevented from his last source.

Arkania.

It had to be Arkania.

Nevermind that planet was a frozen tundra. Nevermind that the average Arkanian had an ego the size of the Death Star. These people seriously creeped him the feth out.

To start with, their hands. Three fingers and a thumb. It was wrong. It was seriously wrong. Sor-Jan wasn't even human and he still managed to have five fingers.

Second, their eyes. What fresh hell was this? Where even were these people looking? And how the holy Hutt could you tell?

Seriously creepy.

As soon as he'd seen that the orientation was going to be held here, he'd almost totally bailed on this college. He still might, if someone came at him with those creepy Arkanian hands. But, the concept behind the school appealed to him.

It was a different perspective on the Force. And there were not a whole lot of times, at least in the last decade, that Sor-Jan had been confronted with a fresh perspective on something he'd been doing for about six decades now.

Sor-Jan used the Force all the time, but he rarely thought about what he was actually doing. What physical reactions were occurring? It was a pragmatic approach to something that Jedi just handwaved with the classic, stretch out with your feelings.

Which, why were Jedi stretching out with their feelings if the whole Jedi mantra was based around the notion that there was no emotion? If there was no emotion, what were they feeling?

But, I digress...

The nice part about being a four foot nothing youngling with a bowl cut was that absolutely no one was paying him the slightest bit of attention. They probably thought that he was someone's kid who'd gotten off the leash. Which was true, from a certain point of view, now that he thought about it.

The Anzat was lingering with his chin resting atop this booth that promised to alchemize swords. First, swords were cool. Sure, Sor-Jan was fifty-someodd years old. He was still a youngling. And thus, cool factor totally counted for attaining and keeping his attention span.

Second of all, he really didn't understand this whole alchemy thing. So if he actually got to see one of these demonstrations, that would at least be something new.

To boldly alchemize what no one alchemized before
Once the wave of people using Drain Knowledge all got their respective takes of knowledge, she feels the headaches pretty intensively, and all she could actually do with the resulting pain was to use it to recharge her Force-batteries. She could no longer offer anything remotely resembling fresh infusions of knowledge, since she could no longer concentrate hard enough to make the infusion; it was for this reason that she kept a painkiller pill in reserve. Then [member="Richard Von"] and [member="Sor-Jan Xantha"] arrived on-scene after she did, so with headaches making her every move even more painful, she would be made to feel that she was closing in on Neural Storm-level of pain, but that would mean, in her mind, that she would need to wait until her pain is at a more controllable level to actually meet with either person. And yet, [member="Simon Mur"] was completely oblivious to her because he kept alchemizing swords. Not that she minded, just that hopefully her head will stop burning with pain in time to get to that person she feels is an exotic Force-user (Richard), completely unlike the others that attempted to drain knowledge from her earlier.

While Imbuing items and swords was a cool trick Richard felt he could learn bigger things than just adding some magic to a sword his quest for knowledge was never done, still, he was not sure what next he could feel a great deal of either pain or anger near him it seemed to be close although maybe he was mistaken the galaxy these days was always in some type of conflict. Richard was no longer concentrating on the demonstration he was now interested in a girl she was powerful this he could sense she might have some better techniques to teach him. Making his way away from the current booth Richard now stood near the booth of [member="Janick Beauchamp"].

Janick wasn't angry in the slightest: her pain level was just the consequence of several people downloading knowledge from her using Force-powered techniques, and several more getting the fresh infusions of knowledge the sign touted. In short, it was just because her mind needed some downtime, not that she would risk forgetting anything. Then she could feel [member="Richard Von"] coming for her booth, paying close attention to Memory Rub and Drain Knowledge, their socio-historical information, the historical attitudes towards the power, as well as the historical uses, the different factors that affect these powers' effectiveness and risks. And, of course, the methodology: in both directions, the practitioner treats the target's memory as if a computer. Memory Rub is about making alterations into another person's memory, be it infusing memories, editing or deleting them, but with infusions and draining being more effective when the target's memory is better, while the edits are more effective when the memory is worse, and also the risks of making somebody accidentally forget something were inversely proportional to the quality of their memory. And also that the pain level of infusion or draining depended on the throughput vs. the target's mental speed: if the throughput is higher than the target's ability to process information, pain will ensue proportionally to the difference between the two. Once her pain level has returned to a more manageable level, she had a proposal to make to Richard:

"I'm Janick, and, because I'm still in too much pain, I cannot infuse the knowledge of Memory Rub into you" she told Richard, while still having some traces of pain in her voice. "What I offer you to do instead, is to try to download the basic knowledge of Memory Rub from me, using Drain Knowledge: Memory Rub can make teaching a lot easier, while Drain Knowledge can make learning much easier"

This was a weird feeling yes Richard was incredibly smart and loved to learn, but he was unsure of how to use the ability Richard knew what it was and had a basic knowledge of what it did but he was no ordinary sorcerer he did not to things by the book or in other words he did not practice regular magic as others did he used his natural intelligence gifts to explore the force and manipulate it to his will his own branch called RVord which was dangerous as it mixed Sith Alchemy and some of the natural gifts of the force this magic could be used by only the most stable minds. Richard never practiced most normal kinds of magic so his skills were unrefined and he was not sure of exactly how or where to start " I'm not sure how to download that knowledge where do I start I've never had practice with this ability "

"It makes mental data transfers much easier in either direction if you first have a feel for the target's brain. Then you pretend the target's mind is a server hosting a HoloNet site, and then you download the data packet from the target's memory to yours"

Certainly [member="Richard Von"] was intrigued by the use of Drain Knowledge, so Janick was, in fact, teaching him as much to the extent it was possible with her still feeling some headaches and hence her head was still feeling rather heavy. By now I shouldn't be fazed by any new student using Drain Knowledge on me to learn anything new, and certainly an entire Force-power, albeit at a very basic level. He'll realize soon enough what kind of brain I have, she thought, while she knew that, even though Drain Knowledge was more common than Memory Rub, it still was a rather uncommon power. It's not because the dark side tended to diminish, or, in fact, affect dark-siders' intellectual abilities, however. Also surfacing were memories of her numerous students that learned the power by learning various stuff: alchemy, psychometry, Memory Walk, Force-lightning, in chronological order. Very useful for learning, especially the more hazardous stuff. Like Memory Walk or Neural Storm, but she knew he was interested in Memory Rub, which she would normally teach by infusion.

"And then you will realize just how much easier can it make learning. With the instructions I gave you, try and download Memory Rub into your brain using Drain Knowledge"

Richard understood now after all he was a smart guy, he tends to focus on learning and by the way she described the power, Richard was certain he could perform it. In fact, Richard thought it possible with these new abilities one could convert it to RVord with enough practice and experience which gave Richard joy. This ability seemed to be mental, requiring no physical movements or words to succeed Richard like to use hand movements to focus his abilities and give himself more control so this was a practice he would have to get used to. Closing his eyes he began making a mental map moving his way to the brains cortex.
He began to feel, almost like he was being resisted at first he wasn't sure if he was not performing it correctly but he soon began to realize this woman was smarter than she was letting on.

" I was very close but I require more practice to manage this ability "

To boldly alchemize what no one alchemized before
"No problem: I understand not everyone get it right the first time. I get that it takes a while to get the mental mapping done, especially the more memories the target has. Once the mental mapping is done, it makes your life easier, and what took you so long to make your mental mapping is just because of the sheer amount of memories I have. Don't forget that the mapping stage is crucial if you want to minimize the amount of pain: you can always drain slower than the target's mind can handle it but if you do it faster than the target's mental speed, you can cause pain. This goes for Memory Rub also"

That, even though she knew from experience that a beginner had its limits in how big of a data-packet they could drain, and how long it could take. But maybe [member="Richard Von"] was, in fact, having trouble initially because of the sheer volume of memories she holds. Maybe on someone with a more "average" memory the mental mapping wouldn't take as long. As surely as she knew the user's processing power was a factor when using mentalism powers of that nature, she knew that it was one of the big bottlenecks. I guess, it's my processing power that gave me the ability to perform Memory Rub at the level I do. I have to be very careful of not infusing or altering too quickly when I do this stuff because pain ensues otherwise - I can always infuse, drain or alter slower than the target's mind, it's just that I don't feel memory manipulation should be more painful than absolutely necessary, Janick thought, while her ventures into Memory Walk-land were often brief precisely beause of pain-related issues. And even when doing Memory Walk, mapping is crucial to her.

"Now that you have a pretty good idea of where in my brain the knowledge of Memory Rub you seek is, you may as well try to use it"

He was willing to try again once again closing his eyes he made a mental map mapping his way to the brain's cortex, once there he searched once again it was difficult there was a lot to go through he was taking his time going slow which made it feel like forever to him but he finally found what he was looking for just long enough to understand the basics on how to use it.

" Why would I use it on you I wouldn't want to mess with any of your memories by using memory rub "

He wasn't sure if she meant drain or rub but he did not want to mess around inside her head being that he is unskilled with that ability and does not trust himself.

"It's not about using it on me, it's about killing two birds with one stone. That is why I ask beginners in Drain Knowledge to download one Force-power from me when learning the power. The mental mapping is crucial even when you want to infuse knowledge especially if you realize the target has limited tolerance to pain: one does not wish to alter, upload or download knowledge faster than the slower of the target's mind or yours if you wish to reduce the amount of pain inflicted" Janick answered [member="Richard Von"]'s question.

That ought to explain why I was suffering from headaches: not only when using Memory Rub on multiple people at once, I have to split my bandwidth across all the targets, so the infusion was, in fact, slow enough for their minds to process it without headaches, I also had the others using Drain Knowledge at the same time, also taking up downstream bandwidth. Even with my mental speed, the total use of mental bandwidth was faster than my mind could handle, she thought. Yes, she was used to using her brain a lot. Yes, she knew that her mind was very fast, much faster than the mind of one's typical dark-sider. Just that the cold hard truth was that the resulting pain would take a while to subside, and yet she was confident that it would. Just that, historically, most mental data transfer users tended to be oblivious to the pain they could inflict, or even use it for the purpose of inflicting pain, Janick instead preferred not to inflict any more pain than absolutely necessary, while acknowledging that sometimes inflicting pain was inevitable in the process.

Well, this seemed to be not so bad of an idea coming to this place, it provided him with knowledge of a new ability but still, Richard wasn't sure he would ever use it unless he could convert it to his own. Richard was sure there is still a lot more he could learn here while passing time until his company was done conducting business nearby with the cloning an sample with the label ' Genetic Sample #AB01- # AB25',

" How far can a user take this ability seems dangerous "

To boldly alchemize what no one alchemized before
"How dangerous the ability is inversely proportional to how good the target's memory is. That is, the better the target's memory, the safer it is to use it on for alterations or draining; with more ordinary people you can risk causing the target to forget something else when making alterations or draining"

Better not get started on Memory Walk: the most significant historical users are also Memory Rub users, too; in fact, it's a prerequisite for Memory Walk. This is far more dangerous than Memory Rub or Drain Knowledge, and even the non-lethal Neural Storm is still much more dangerous than Memory Rub, Janick thought, while pondering the answer to [member="Richard Von"]'s question. In her mind, memories of her using both Neural Storm and Memory Walk in the same sorties surfaced, first on Utapau when she was working on the construction material theft case, which led to the arrest of one Tro'zet gangster called HiteVision, and then on Susefvi when dealing with one Mustafarian Sith Lord that caused Griet some problems back in the Republic era, and also to her in mirror form on Alakaha. And, from there, accruing some fame in Memory Walk, and in Neural Storm, too, so she had a repertoire of exotic mind-related Force-powers to call upon. And they all shared the same hazards, although how effective Neural Storm or Memory Walk was more about mental defenses than how good the target's memory was.

"Beyond simply draining or altering memories, one may wish to cause memories to trigger out of control, in which case it's a way to provoke a seizure, typically when you want to incapacitate someone or something without killing it; it's called Neural Storm in that form. There's also triggering painful memories, sometimes you can be specific, but most people that used Memory Walk instead preferred to cause pain by indiscriminately triggering those painful memories over and over. For good reason I would typically teach that stuff after the person has learned Memory Rub"

" Yea I will keep the mind speed in mind for future use, what other kinds abilities you got most of the stuff I am good at is stealth, insight, and future-seeing so far I'm not advanced enough in my own techniques to use any combative abilities "

At this moment Richard realized something about his own methods none of his abilities are offensive all either passive or defensive this opened his eyes because RVord is based off Sith Alchemy and manipulating the Dark side of the force none of these require the Dark side which kept him safe from being too arrogant or reckless but at the same time he had to step far enough in to reach his goals.

" Maybe I'll focus more on the sorcery I've been spending a lot of time on my company and science "

At this point, he was noticeably startled on how his view changed so fast.
