Demonym: Bori
Region: Wild Space
System Name: Ord Borealis System
System Features: 1 Yellow Star, 1 Gas Giant planet, 2 moons
Location:
IMG_1274.png
Major Imports: Technology
Major Exports: Tourism, Trade Goods
Unexploited Resources: Baradium

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION
Gravity: Standard
Climate: Temperate
Primary Terrain: Forest, Mountain, Swamp, Jungle
Atmosphere: Type I

LOCATION INFORMATION
Capital City: Borealis Spaceport
Planetary Features: Multiple large mountain ranges over a wild forested world, with swamp and jungle at the equator, and polar forests in the far north and south. Most of the planet's landmass is on the large eastern continent. The spaceport and settlement are located on the western coast of the northern sector of the main continental mass. There are a chain of islands that stretch from Borealis across the ocean to the small western continent, and here is where most of the planet's volcanic activity occurs. The western continent is more low lying and swampy than the east, is shaped somewhat like a serpent, as it snakes almost from pole to pole, but is only several hundred miles across at its widest point. More than half the surface is ocean, with some small inland lakes and swamps along major rivers.
Major Locations: Borealis Spaceport, Eastern Continent, Western Continent, Island Chain

POPULATION
Native Species: Various mostly hostile non sentient amphibian, aquatic, avian, and insect species.
Immigrated Species: Various dangerous fauna suitable for hunting.
Population: Insignificant - The spaceport town of Borealis is the main settlement on the planet. Outside of the settlement is the wilds which are not ventured into lightly.
Demographics: Primarily humans, though alien species are not unknown.
Primary Languages: Galactic Basic
Culture: Borealis has a strong trading culture, functioning as a starport on the very edge of known space. The frontier mentality also gives the locals a strong tradition of self reliance and self defence.

GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY
Government: Military Dictatorship
Affiliation: Elysium Empire
Wealth: Medium Though trade is constant and stable, it is light given the planet's remote location.
Stability: High A peaceful and law abiding society with stable employment and generous wealth creation provides for a happy populace.
Freedom & Oppression: Though the law is strict and unyielding, it rarely intrudes upon local activities. Locals are free to live their lives uninterrupted provided they obey the fair and just laws.

MILITARY & TECHNOLOGY
Military: Given its remote location in galactic terms, the Starport has significant defenses in order to keep away pirates and raiders. A local volunteer militia can be called up at need to support the starport if it came under attack.
Technology: Galactic Standard

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The system of Ord Borealis was discovered quite by accident, when a Pius Dea cathedral ship made a blind jump into hyperspace, and came out far on the galactic rim. Low on fuel and with their vessel crippled, the survivors landed on the system's habitable moon, making it their home, and naming the world Ord Borealis, designating it an ordnance depot for a future crusade.

These survivors lasted almost three decades, and established a functional settlement before being thrown out by a human and alien coalition of traders who had suffered at the hands of Pius Dea. The new inhabitants worked as hard as the first, and built a thriving trading outpost and spaceport on the planet, which retained its name.

The traders and merchants banded together to ward away slavers, raiders, and pirates, and used their wealth to expand the settlement, which was self sufficient, while catering to local galactic trade, and built up a thriving tourism industry around the local wildlife. Over many hundreds of years the Bori have become a mixed species culture, which would no doubt infuriate the original colonists no end.

One of the most notable events in the history of the system occured only a few decades past, when the moon of Biro, twin to Ord Borealis was struck by an asteroid. The impact ignited a subsurface vein of Baradium, a material found on both moons. The explosion destroyed more than a third of the moon's mass in a colossal explosion easily visible from Ord Borealis. The remains of the moon now shift and wobble in their orbit, rotating in an unstable fashion, which makes for significant astronomical interest.

The trading port made it through the cataclysm with remarkably little impact, except for interest in the event giving the locals a small boost to tourism. Ord Borealis continues to exist today, a quiet trading port thriving on the very edge of galactic space.

I like the baradium explosion as a strange frontier event! Feels very Star Wars. Before we move to approval, however, there are a number of things we will need to address. The biggest one is this: is Ord Borealis a planet, or the moon of a gas giant? This submission is mostly written as if it's a full-fledged planet; however, in System Features you list one gas giant with two moons, and later on in Historical Information you say that the moon Biro is Ord Borealis's twin.

If Ord Borealis is a moon, it's not a planet, and cannot be submitted to the Planet section; Moons are considered Astronomical Objects, and go in the Location section. If it's a moon but you want the system to show up on the galaxy map, you'll need to submit the gas giant as a Planet submission, mentioning the moons in System Features. You can then submit Ord Borealis as a Location sub in the same system.

If Ord Borealis is its own planet, we can keep the current sub, but must address the following:

  • System Features: What is the name of the star? The gas giant? You mention Biro's name later, but it should go here too.

  • Major Exports: Exporting tourism implies that the planet sends it elsewhere. You export tourists if your planet sends out cruise liners to other planets, for example, or if local people on the planet are commonly tourists. If you want to imply that tourism of Ord Borealis (perhaps nature tourism, given the wilderness?) is a major industry, I'd list Tourists under Major Imports instead.
    • "Trade Goods" is not very specific, and this doesn't seem like a big industrial planet. What specifically is exported to sell?
      • Handcrafts? Wood? Stone? Nature Souvenirs? Exotic Pets?

  • Unexploited Resources: Please provide a link to Baradium. Is this present on Ord Borealis, or only on Biro?

  • Major Locations: Per the Planet template, "What are the major locations on your world? Include an explanation on each." You're writing about an entire world here, or at least a moon. Give us at minimum a sentence or two of detail on these locations. If an alien came to Earth and pointed at Africa on a map and said "what's that?", and you replied "oh, it's the southern continent", the alien would learn nothing about Africa, its varied and beautiful environment, its rich history, its diverse cultures, etc. We need more here.

  • Immigrated Species: This should include Humans and any other sentient species that have settled here in significant numbers.

  • Stability: I'm curious about why Stability here is High. As far as I can tell, this is a frontier planet (moon?) with only one settlement on it, surrounded by thick wilderness and dangerous fauna. That doesn't sound wildly safe to me, but the Stability rating is on par with Core Worlds planets with large police forces and no natural predators. I'd either lower this or explain a little more.

  • History: Since this planet was settled so long ago, and thus has such a long history, it would be great to see a mention of how it fared during the Gulag Plague and the 400-Year Darkness that followed. Since it's at the edge of the galaxy, it may have just kind of kept to itself and not been bothered, but it's always nice to give site history a mention. Helps the galaxy feel consistent.

Please reach out with any questions, or if you need any help.
