Born in an Artisian family that has links with the Society, a criminal organisation means that Erden was exposed to violence from childhood. Like it or not, criminals spent their lives fighting in the streets and close combat becomes a necessity when firearms were restricted or not available. Therefore it was not surprising that Erden's father made sure his son was well versed in melee combat during the nature of their work. Due to his Artisian background, Erden had been schooled with the art of dual wielding created by Yovshin Swordsmen, also known as Jar'Kai in lightsaber combat.
To learn about Jar'kai traditionally means Erden was required to wield actual blades. It was unthinkable to consider learning the traditional art form using lightsabers, simply because not every student was Force sensitive and could wield a lightsaber effectively. By the time Erden had grown up and inherited the rank of a Red Pole in the Society, he knew he needed to upgrade his swords into something better. A new pair of swords was forged with the help of an Artisian swordsmith who created the initial blades while Erden channelled his mastery of the Force to imbue the blades, creating steel that would be unique to his requirements.
Odgerel, or Starlight in Galactic Basic was the name of his katana. A fitting name considering the blade was forged with a permanent ice effect. His other blade was a kodachi, a short sword called Timur, meaning iron. It served as a moving shield for Erden when he engaged in combat, using the kodachi's lighter weight and ease of wielding to block off blows or blaster fire. While the swords had seen lots of action in the past, these days they were mostly displayed in his armoury as it was no longer necessary for Erden to do the grunt work after becoming the leader of the Society. That said, they were always ready to be used if the need arose.
