Casaana remembered well the last time she'd come to Ilum. It'd been a much happier time, right as she was on the cusp of becoming a Padawan, as she was finding her lightsaber crystal. Now her heart was in her throat, constricting it as she sat in the darkened viewing stands, hardly believing what she was hearing. Not Braze, not Ko. Surely they'd investigate this compulsion. And if it were real (which she hoped it was) forgive him, and get him the help he needed to rid himself of this terrible thing and the guilt of his actions. They were Jedi, they helped each other.

Her senses drifted down, not interfering, but feeling out those arrayed in the court. Ko didn't seem angry, thankfully, not that she'd blame him, but weary from all he'd been through. Braze felt at ill ease, understandable given where he was and what had happened. But also resigned, as if he already suspected today's outcome and wasn't going to fight it too hard. Casaana couldn't get a read on Jand Talo beyond feeling the weight of the moment. Personally, she thought this was a bit much for a Knight to be taking on, but she'd never seen this side of the Order before or really knew who he was. Maybe he was a regular Judiciary.

The Kel Dor listened. Taking in the revelations offered by Jasper’s experience as well as Braze’s own words. Much of it lined up with his own thoughts. Such as how Ko found no real darkness within Braze’s ferocious attempt on his own life. The subtle yet crucial restraint that was shown. Even in his own lapse of judgment when he nearly committed to harming his own superior in Master San Tekka.

Ko was quick to come to some kind of conclusion before speaking. “None of us ask for the conditions we were born under, or the times we live in. We are not responsible for how we are raised, and the problems that may come of it.” Both of them seemed to be relying on Braze’s lack of agency for his conditioning for their defense.

“However, I tend to believe that at a certain point we as individuals have a responsibility to overcome such struggles and grow.” Ko stated as if ready to chastise the young echani.

The Kel Dor let out a deep sigh from behind his antiox mask. A thin cloud of vapor spilling out from it into the chilly air of the temple. “Your unawareness Braze, does absolve you from a great deal though. None of us can intentionally solve problems we do not know of. I think you should consider your previous ignorance of this a blessing.”

Then turning his masked gaze towards Jasper, Ko addressed the Master. “You’re correct in what you say about the previous actions and decisions of those within the order. It’s important we’re mindful of what they did, and be sure not to repeat those same mistakes.” Ko stated sternly. Casting some measure of judgment on their forebears. “Be careful that your love and attachment isn’t clouding your reasoning here.” Ko added, stubbornly adhering to traditional jedi principles, for better or worse.

“Hmmm… Realistically all of us gathered here today really don’t have much authority given the situation we are in. The best I believe we can do are some strongly worded suggestions that You and Braze could take into serious consideration. Rather coming to some sort of conclusion that’s actionable and enforceable.” Ko said, recognizing the fact that what the NJO had to work with now was basically a diminutive skeleton crew.

“I don’t believe that exile would be an appropriate consequence. The two of you have already voluntarily and functionally distanced yourselves from the order before in your adventures. Nor do I think Braze is the type to seriously undergo the intense atonement of something like the Barash Vow. Master Kai’el, I think your former student is still in need of your guidance. If it were up to me as a judge I would sentence you to teach, and Braze to learn. Now armed with the knowledge and insight to more fully overcome the internal struggles that burden your pupil.” Ko suggested, looking to set them on a path of hard work and self improvement. “We’re in no position willingly to lose more of what little remains of our order. Nor can any of us undo the mistakes of the past. While justice may not be achieved here, we can settle for progress…”

Jand listened as the discussion about Braze's fate continued.

There were points made by all who voiced valid opinions, in varying degrees. When both Braze and Jasper spoke of the former's situation, Jand was not blind to the circumstances, though he also maintained that it was important to conclude with a suitable outcome that also held one responsible for all actions with the understanding that, in certain aspects, perhaps one was not wholly in control.

Once Master Ko concluded, Jand spoke:

"With respect, I disagree. We cannot ignore what has happened, though I believe seeking punishment such as the Barash Vow or death to be extreme, under the circumstances surrounding Braze's past and situation," he looked to Jasper. "I believe that, irrespective of the Order's status, we cannot allow for such brazen actions to be undermined by our lack of numbers. I fully believe that exile is within the scope of discipline for this individual, though I would suggest that it be with a caveat:

"Instead of exile from the New Jedi Order fully and completely, I instead propose self-imposed exile from the Order, until Braze has redeemed himself in the eyes of his mentor and guardian, Master Jasper. I feel that Master Jasper's understanding and connection to the circumstances, as well as his morality and sense of justice, will allow Braze to be held to account fairly. And I also trust Jasper to apply the necessary pressure to see Braze redeemed, before permitting him to seek us out to return to the Order - should Braze even wish to."

Jand looked between those gathered.

"This strikes me as a suitable middleground; as the seriousness of these actions warrants punishment, but circumstances are such as to be taken into account. So, I present the above: self-imposed exile until Master Jasper feels satisfied with acts toward redemption."

Jand looked to Jasper. "Do you accept this responsibility?"

And then to the other Jedi: "And do those present agree with this decision?"

"Do you accept this responsibility?"

Jasper let out an exhale. This was the best they were going to get. For all Braze had sacrificed for the New Jedi Order, he was being asked to redeem himself for actions others forced him to perform against his own wishes. And yet, it was a mercy. He wasn't going to pick apart Ko and his mention of having a conflict of interest. He knew well enough that the Kel Dor was hiding his own inner turmoil. He respected what Ko had done for the Order enough to not call such a thing out. All that was left now was the simple verdict that Jand offered to him. He didn't resent the Nagai for such a conclusion. After all, accountability was something he had always prioritized. It would be wrong for him to not persue such things, even if they were weighted unfairly in Jasper's eyes.

"I will do what I must," Jasper stated.

He offered a half-bow and stepped back, waiting to be dismissed. He gave no other words, no strong emotion or desperate plea to reconsider. The Master simply accepted the situation for what it was. Jasper Kai'el once sat on the Jedi Council. Every action in his life upon returning as a padawan was done in service to the Core and the order that raised him. Now his path as a Jedi was clearer than it ever had been.

He would not return to the New Jedi Order.
