  • Utilizes electrical waves to influence sentient and droid brains.

  • Creates a zone where eyes/photoreceptors begin to experience intense darkness

  • Within this darkness zone, most beings begin to experience feelings of unease, uncertainty, uncomfortableness, and an intense desire to run far away from it.

  • The Darkness: When plugged into a powered battlesuit, the device creates a 20 meter zone of darkness around the user. This darkness is an interference in sentient/droid brains, often causing glitches in how it views the world around it. This creates a darkness effect, that is intense and makes it incredibly difficult to use their eyes/photoreceptors to accurately view what is happening. Over a period of ten minutes eyes and minds will slowly begin to adapt, making it easier to see the longer they are inside the field.

  • Flee: When inside this zone of darkness those effected by it begin to feel incredibly uneasy. Uncertainty fills their minds, fear begins to boil inside them, and all they know is they must get out of the area. It can cause many to flee from the area altogether. This effect does not seem to be effected much by force inspiration abilities.

  • Nocturnal Species: The darkness effect is drastically reduced on nocturnal species who have enhanced night vision. While their vision may be a bit dull and fuzzy, they will not be significantly impaired by it.

  • Adapting: When a person is exposed to the device for long periods of times, many times in a row, they develop resistance to it. It takes less time for their minds to adapt to the darkness, in some cases just moments, and the fleeing feeling has little effect.

  • Mental Fortitude: While the fleeing effect is intense, individuals will experience it differently. Those who have extreme mental conditioning, force related or not, will be much less effected by it than rank and file civilians and soldiers.

  • Sensors: Beyond photoreceptors and cameras and the like that transmit visual data, sensors are not affected by the device.

  • Non-Discriminate: It effects the user, and their squad mates as much as it effects everyone else in the zone.

The Nightcaller device utilizes electrical fields to interfere with the connection between the brain and eyes of sentient creatures. It confuses the mind, and interferes with what is seen, creating what seems like to the affected being, to be a deep darkness surrounding them.

Once under the effects of the device, the brain attempts to compensate for this, but the field continues to interfere. This causes feelings of unease to form inside the individual, of something being very wrong, and not right. They are vastly aware they are under the spell of something. As the mind tries to compensate more, feelings of paranoia form, with subtle undertones of fear. This leads to the brain to send impulses to flee, to get far away from what it causing the problem. While the being can fight this impulse, it tends to get stronger the longer one is exposed to it.

However, after about ten minutes, the brain, always a magnificent entity, begins to decipher the confusion, and slowly sight begins to return. Though its muddled, like the eyes are simply adjusting to a very low light situation. While it won't be perfect, after ten minutes, a being can see enough to begin to much easier navigate the Dark Zone.

Many exposures, for long periods of time, over many days can allow an individual to form a resistance to the effects of the device, so that their brain can adjust quickly, and the fleeing effect is barely felt.

An interesting effect, is that droid photoreceptors, security cameras and the like, are also affected by the device's electrical waves. However, other forms of sensors are not.

Like the link above, what you are going for is plausible. My only concern with this is

Generators: If the device is placed with a generator, the power and distance it can reach goes up tremendously. When placed within large ships, the distance it effects could be kilometers around the ship.

As a small man-portable device I'm not heavily concerned with it darkening the room and making an aura of fear (especially since you noted it can be overcome), but as a multi-Kilometer AoE, that pushes it more towards the level of a Phobis Device. You might consider removing that strength or tempering the optimum range of its effect.

You may also include that its non-discriminate as a weakness here as surely squadmates around a person using this would be similarly affected.

Let me know what you think.

I think the second one, was one I meant to add in anyway, so did so. And the first was one I was iffy on myself. So, if we are both iffy on it, might as well take it out. It was designed for a purpose, it will be fun as it is!
